If your page starts showing ChunkLoadError after a deployment, first inspect the failed JavaScript request in your browser’s Network panel. A common deployment-related possibility is that the browser is using HTML or runtime code from one build while the server or CDN cannot provide the chunk that build expects. Rolling releases can also send requests to instances serving incompatible versions. The error name alone does not prove either cause; the failed request’s URL, status, response, and responding host are the evidence to follow.

Why am I getting a ChunkLoadError after deploying my Next.js app?

A chunk is a JavaScript file loaded separately from the initial page bundle. When a page or its runtime requests a chunk and that request fails, the application may report a chunk-loading error. After a release, one possible explanation is a version mismatch: a browser still has a document or runtime from the previous build, while the active server or CDN serves files from the new build—or no longer has the old chunk.

A related risk occurs during a rolling deployment. If different instances serve incompatible combinations of HTML, runtime code, and chunk files, a request may succeed or fail depending on which instance handles it. These are diagnostic hypotheses, not universal explanations. A failed chunk request can have other causes, and the error label by itself does not identify the failing layer.

How do I fix ChunkLoadError after deployment?

Use the failed request to determine what needs fixing. In browser developer tools, open the Network panel, reproduce the error, and select the failed JavaScript request.

  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
  1. Record the request details. Note the full chunk URL, HTTP status, response body or preview, content type, request timing, and which host or deployment answered. A 404 suggests checking whether the requested file exists at that path. An HTML error page returned for a script URL suggests checking routing, fallback behavior, or the responding host. Different responses from different hosts point toward deployment or routing inconsistency. These observations narrow the investigation; none alone proves a single root cause.
  2. Compare the page and chunk versions. Check whether the document and runtime in the browser belong to the same deployment as the chunk response. During a rolling release, verify that old and new instances are not serving incompatible build artifacts together.
  3. Check file availability and cache routing. Confirm that the requested chunk exists in the deployed assets and that a CDN or reverse proxy is not returning stale HTML or routing the asset request to an incompatible release. Next.js documents a long-lived immutable cache policy for truly immutable static assets; the goal is to keep correctly versioned assets cacheable while ensuring the page requests assets consistent with its deployment. See the Next.js self-hosting guide.
  4. For rolling Next.js deployments, configure a deployment identifier. Next.js documents the deploymentId option as protection against version skew and a cache-busting aid during rolling deployments. Set a unique identifier for each deployment and use it consistently across instances serving that deployment. Next.js appends the ID as a query parameter to static asset URLs and uses response headers to detect a mismatch and trigger a hard navigation. Consult Next.js deploymentId documentation for configuration details and behavior.
  5. Check multi-instance coordination. Confirm that instances identified as the same deployment share compatible build artifacts and the same deployment ID. Review shared cache and tag coordination where applicable; Next.js notes that per-instance cache isolation can contribute to divergence. Its self-hosting guide covers cache and CDN considerations.
  6. Verify your deployment mode. Next.js says Node.js server and Docker deployments support all Next.js features, while static export has limited support and platform adapters vary. If the app relies on a feature your deployment mode does not support, investigate that mismatch rather than treating the error as a cache problem. See Next.js deployment guidance and its platform deployment guide.

When should you try a hard refresh?

If the request evidence suggests that the browser is holding a stale document or runtime, a hard refresh can temporarily load a current page and help confirm that possibility. It is a diagnostic step or short-term workaround—not a durable repair. If the active server still lacks the requested chunk, or requests continue to cross incompatible deployment versions, refreshing alone will not fix the deployment.

What should React users check outside Next.js?

Next.js’s deploymentId is a Next.js feature, not a general React fix. For a React app built with another toolchain, use the failed request to check that toolchain’s public path or base URL, that the emitted chunk is present at the requested location, and that deployment and CDN routing serve compatible release assets. The appropriate setting depends on the actual bundler and hosting setup.
