In HackerRank’s 2024 survey, respondents preferred learning new skills through a work project; when that was not feasible, they favored structured online learning. The findings describe preferences, not proof that one method produces better outcomes for every developer.
What practical learning means for a developer
Practical learning is the process of understanding a concept while using it to solve a realistic development problem. That might mean changing a feature, debugging a failure, testing an approach, or contributing to an existing codebase. It is not the opposite of theory: concepts help a developer choose an approach, while practice reveals how that approach behaves under constraints.
A useful learning loop is to study an idea, apply it to a task, observe what happens, and reflect on the result. This is a practical recommendation, not a prescription directly tested by the sources discussed here.
Why it matters: relevance and practice
Working on a meaningful task gives a learner a reason to use a new idea and exposes decisions that an explanation alone may leave abstract: how the code fits an existing system, what trade-offs matter, and how to tell whether a change works. For developers, this can make learning immediately relevant to the work at hand.

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
HackerRank’s 2024 Developer Skills Report asked respondents about the best way to learn new skills. Developers preferred learning in the context of a work project. If that was not possible, they preferred structured online learning, followed by self-directed online learning. This is evidence of stated preference—not a controlled comparison of learning outcomes or proof that project work is always the most effective option.
What the survey says about time to learn
The same report points to a practical barrier: having time to learn. Among developers surveyed, 22% said they were regularly given time for upskilling or learning, while 48% said they had to find the time on their own. Those are survey responses, not a universal estimate for developers everywhere.

HackerRank says its 2024 survey was conducted in autumn 2023 among its community and included 4,107 respondents across several groups, including developers, engineering managers, talent acquisition professionals, executives, and students. Individual question totals may differ. The results should not be treated as a representative census of developers.
How practice and peer learning can work together
Practical learning does not have to mean solving every problem alone. A study by Maggie Johnson and Max Senges examined software-engineer onboarding at Google, describing practice-based learning alongside peer learning and collaboration as parts of how new engineers learned to become productive in the company’s codebase.

The study drew on interviews with 24 Google stakeholders as well as observations, document analysis, and existing survey and statistical data. It is a case study of one organization, published in 2010; it illustrates an approach rather than establishing a result that applies to all companies. For a learner, the useful implication is modest: reviewing a change with a colleague, asking questions, and learning how a team works can complement hands-on coding.
Choosing a practical way to learn
Use the option that connects a new concept to practice while giving you enough structure, time, and feedback to make progress. The survey supports preferences, not a ranking of effectiveness, so choose based on your circumstances.

- If you have a relevant work task: Use it to practice the concept, with a clear goal and a way to check the result. This aligns with the preference reported in HackerRank’s survey.
- If you do not have a suitable work task: The report identifies structured online learning as respondents’ preferred fallback, ahead of self-directed online learning. Choose a course or guided exercise that includes opportunities to apply what you are learning; the report does not endorse a particular provider.
- If you need more room to experiment: As practical advice, build a small, complete project or contribute to an existing one. Keep the scope manageable so you can finish a useful change and inspect the outcome.
- If you can learn with others: Ask a teammate to review your reasoning or walk you through relevant parts of the codebase. The Google study describes peer learning and collaboration in its onboarding case, not a guaranteed benefit for every learner.
What managers can do to make learning possible
Offering training is not the same as making time to participate in it. The gap in HackerRank respondents’ reports of learning time makes protected time a practical management consideration: teams can discuss priorities, identify a suitable task for applying a skill, and make room for feedback. The survey does not establish how any specific policy affects learning outcomes.
What the evidence does—and does not—show
The available evidence supports a careful conclusion: surveyed developers preferred project-based learning when possible, and one Google onboarding study describes practice, peer learning, and collaboration in a complex organization. It does not establish that hands-on learning beats every other method, guarantees employability, or is becoming more effective over time. Practical learning is best treated as a way to connect ideas with realistic work, alongside instruction and reflection.
