Livestreaming a podcast on YouTube makes sense when real-time audience participation is part of the show: listeners can ask questions, hosts can respond, and an episode can feel like a shared event. It is an additional format, not a replacement for setting up a YouTube podcast or distributing episodes on demand. Live video adds scheduling and production demands, and it does not guarantee discovery, growth, or revenue.

Should I livestream my podcast on YouTube?

Consider going live when the conversation benefits from being live: a listener Q&A, an interview with audience questions, a timely reaction, or a guest event. A regular community may value being able to join and take part as the episode happens. YouTube describes chat interaction and tools for live discovery and post-stream highlights, but access to particular features can vary and change. YouTube Live updates

A recorded release may suit a tightly edited show, a host with an unpredictable schedule, or a conversation that works better without the pressure of a real-time broadcast. Live production means planning for timing and technical issues while recording; an on-demand episode allows more flexibility to edit before publishing. These are format trade-offs, not evidence that one format reliably performs better.

What YouTube’s audience figures do—and do not—say

YouTube announced in February 2025 that more than 1 billion monthly active viewers watched podcast content on the platform. The same announcement reported that viewers watched over 400 million hours of podcasts monthly on living-room devices in 2024. In December 2025, YouTube said living-room devices accounted for over 700 million hours of podcast viewing in October 2025, compared with 400 million hours in October 2024. These are YouTube’s platform figures; they describe podcast viewing broadly, not the expected audience for an individual livestream. How livestreaming relates to a YouTube podcast

YouTube treats a podcast as a playlist of video episodes. Eligible podcast playlists may receive podcast badges and qualify for discovery features, YouTube Music inclusion, and other podcast surfaces. Eligibility does not guarantee placement or traffic. A livestream is a way to present an episode live; it does not automatically make the stream a podcast or qualify it for every podcast feature.

  1. Choose the episode format. Decide whether the live show will be a video episode, whether you will publish its recording in your podcast playlist afterward, and whether an audio-first version will also be distributed through RSS.
  2. Create or check the podcast playlist. In YouTube Studio, use the podcast setup workflow to create a podcast playlist or identify an existing one. Organize full episodes there; do not designate a playlist of clips or seasons as the podcast. YouTube says episodes are videos, and playlists may be ineligible if they include content you do not own. YouTube Help: Create a podcast in YouTube Studio
  3. Choose how to deliver episodes. For a visual show, upload video episodes. YouTube’s October 2025 guide also describes connecting a public RSS feed; that route can turn audio episodes into videos with static images. Check the current Studio workflow and whether it is available and suitable for your show and hosting platform. YouTube’s October 2025 podcast setup guide
  4. Prepare and schedule the live episode. Use YouTube’s current live-streaming controls for your channel to configure the broadcast and let listeners know when to join. Make sure the host, guests, and any live contributors understand how chat will be handled. Live-product features and availability can change, so verify what your account can use.
  5. Run the show, then handle the recording. After the stream, decide whether to publish the full recording as an episode in the podcast playlist and whether to make separate clips. Shorts that support a podcast do not appear in YouTube Music, according to YouTube’s podcast setup guidance.

What to weigh before making it a regular show

  • Interaction: Live chat offers a chance to respond during the episode; an edited release is a more controlled, one-way listening experience.
  • Timing: A scheduled broadcast creates a shared occasion, while an on-demand episode is available when listeners choose to play it.
  • Production: A live show requires real-time coordination and leaves less room to fix mistakes before publication. A recording can be edited before release.
  • Reuse: A recording may support a full on-demand episode or clips. YouTube has announced live highlights that can become Shorts, but do not assume every channel or stream has identical tools or outcomes.
  • Discovery: Organizing full episodes in an eligible podcast playlist can make them eligible for YouTube podcast features. Livestreaming alone does not ensure those features or audience growth.
  • Rights and policy: Confirm that you have rights to everything in the episode and that the channel meets relevant YouTube requirements before streaming or monetizing.

Can I make money livestreaming a podcast?

Potentially, if the channel is eligible and complies with YouTube’s policies. YouTube lists ads and fan-funding options such as memberships among possible monetization routes, but availability and earnings are not guaranteed. Its monetization policy says monetized content must be original and authentic and applies to livestreams. Check the current eligibility requirements and policies before relying on any revenue feature. YouTube podcast monetization guidance · YouTube channel monetization policies
