If Phone Link is not receiving messages or sent texts are not showing, first check the messaging permissions and feature switches for your phone type. Then check for app updates, a working connection, and battery restrictions. Some missing messages—especially older iPhone texts or unsupported group and RCS messages—are platform limitations rather than a sync fault.
1. Turn on Android message syncing in Phone Link
On your Windows PC, open Phone Link > Settings > Features > Messages. Confirm that the message feature and any relevant MMS options are enabled. If message syncing was turned off, messages from the linked phone will not appear until you turn it back on. See Microsoft’s instructions for setting up messages.
2. Restore Link to Windows permissions on Android
Phone Link needs the Android permissions required to access messages and transfer data. If you denied a permission during setup, open Android Settings and grant the relevant permission to Link to Windows; the exact menu labels can vary by phone and Android version. Android 13 and later require notification permission for data transfer and notifications. Also check that Link to Windows has not lost message access after a permission change.
Microsoft’s Phone Link requirements and setup guide explains the permissions and pairing requirements.

3. Check iPhone Bluetooth permissions
If you use an iPhone, open Settings > Bluetooth, tap the information button next to the paired Windows PC, and enable Show Notifications and Sync Contacts if those options are available. Phone Link for iPhone relies on the Bluetooth connection and the permissions granted for that pairing. Microsoft’s message setup instructions cover this step.
4. Update Phone Link and Link to Windows
Check for updates to Phone Link on Windows and Link to Windows on Android, then reopen both apps. Microsoft recommends using current app versions when content will not sync. You can also install available Windows and phone-system updates; requirements and interface labels may change over time. The current Phone Link requirements page lists supported versions.

5. Confirm both devices have a reliable connection
Make sure the PC and phone are online and Phone Link shows an active connection. A slow network can delay sending or syncing; Microsoft Support notes, “You may experience delays while sending or syncing your messages if your network connection is slow.” For Android, Microsoft recommends keeping both devices connected to the same trusted Wi-Fi network for reliable communication. For iPhone, check that the Bluetooth pairing is still active.
If messages eventually appear after a delay, connectivity is a more likely explanation than a missing-message setting. Microsoft’s message troubleshooting guide discusses slow connections.

6. Check battery saver and background restrictions
Temporarily turn off battery saver on the phone and PC, then check whether messages begin syncing. On Android, review the battery settings for Link to Windows and allow background activity if the phone is restricting it. Battery optimization can interrupt the app’s ability to stay connected or transfer updates. Microsoft’s Phone Link troubleshooting guide and notification troubleshooting guide describe battery and access checks.
7. Keep iPhone connected—and understand its message history
Phone Link for iPhone does not act as a full archive of the iPhone’s Messages app. It shows messages exchanged while the iPhone and PC are paired and connected through Phone Link. Texts sent directly from the iPhone may not appear, and if Bluetooth disconnects, the displayed message history can disappear from Phone Link. Reconnecting cannot make messages sent outside that connected Phone Link session appear as a complete historical thread.

8. Check whether the message type is supported
Some messages will not behave like ordinary one-to-one SMS or MMS texts in Phone Link. Check the message type before treating it as a sync failure:

- PERFORMANCE: Blazing-fast Qualcomm performance. Get the speed you need for great entertainment with a Snapdragon 680 processor and 4GB of RAM.
- 64GB built-in storage. Get plenty of room for photos, movies, songs, and apps. Made for US
- Third-party messaging apps: If another app is the phone’s primary messaging platform, messages from it may not appear. Microsoft says regular SMS and MMS are expected to work.
- Group messages: Group messaging is not supported as a normal Phone Link feature. If Phone Link cannot identify a group conversation, a group message may appear in an individual thread, and a reply could go to that individual sender.
- RCS: Microsoft documents RCS support only for select Samsung devices and mobile operator networks. Availability depends on carrier and location, and Samsung Messages must be the default messaging app. Typing indicators and read receipts are not supported RCS features in Phone Link; the documented image-download limit for this RCS functionality is 2 MB.
These are product limitations, so repeatedly retrying a sync will not make unsupported message types behave like standard SMS. Microsoft’s troubleshooting page describes these limitations.
9. Confirm the account and repair the connection
If messages are still missing after the checks above, confirm that Phone Link and Link to Windows are set up with the same Microsoft account. Review internet and Wi-Fi access, battery saver, message permissions, and background access once more. If the connection itself remains broken, use Microsoft’s unlink-and-relink steps to pair the phone again rather than changing unrelated message settings. Follow the recovery guidance in Troubleshooting the Phone Link.
Check that your device meets Phone Link requirements
Microsoft lists Windows 10 with the October 2022 update or later, or Windows 11, and Android 10 or later for Phone Link. The iPhone path requires iOS 16 or later and a PC with Bluetooth Low Energy support. Requirements can change, so check Microsoft’s live requirements and setup page if pairing or a feature is unavailable.
