Phone photos are often blurry because the camera glass is dirty or obstructed, the camera has not focused on the subject, or the phone or subject moved during capture. Close-up softness, bright-light flare, and some accessory or lighting effects can also be normal optical or model-specific behavior. Start by cleaning and uncovering the camera, tapping to focus, adding light, steadying the phone, and moving back from a very close subject.
Why are my phone pictures blurry?
Blur usually comes from one of three things: the camera cannot see clearly through its glass, focus is set at the wrong distance or on the wrong subject, or movement occurs while the photo is being taken. Low light makes motion blur more likely because the camera may need a longer exposure. A photo can also look soft at close range because of the lens’s focus limits or depth of field, rather than a fault.
Look for a pattern: blur only in dim light points toward movement; blur only on close subjects points toward focus distance or depth of field; and blur or glare that changes when you remove a case or protector suggests an obstruction or accessory effect.
How to troubleshoot a blurry phone camera
- Clean and uncover the camera. Wipe the front or rear camera glass gently with a clean, soft microfiber or lint-free cloth. Remove any case, camera cover, film, or lens protector that overlaps the camera, then take a comparison photo. Avoid abrasive materials and do not apply liquid directly to the camera glass.
- Focus on the intended subject. In the viewfinder, tap the subject and check that it looks sharp before taking the photo. If the camera struggles to focus, move farther away and try again; the closest usable distance varies by phone and lens.
- Add light and reduce movement. Move to a brighter spot, keep the phone steady, and ask a moving subject to pause if possible. For a long low-light or Night Sight exposure, brace the phone on a stable surface. Optical image stabilization can help counter phone movement on supported iPhone models, but it cannot make every moving subject sharp.
- Change the angle around bright light. If a bright lamp or the sun is causing flare, change your angle. If a halo appears, try a shot without flash.
- Compare cameras and settings. Where available, compare the front and rear cameras, another lens or zoom setting, and a different camera app as diagnostic checks. Restart the phone and install available software updates if the problem continues.
- Inspect for damage or persistent haze. Look for scratches, cracks, dirt buildup, or condensation. If blur remains in the same area across different distances and scenes, or you see internal moisture or physical damage, contact the manufacturer or a qualified repair provider.
Why are the edges of my close-up blurry?
Phone cameras have a minimum focusing distance, and it can vary from one lens to another. Getting closer does not always make a subject sharper. Google’s Pixel Camera Help recommends keeping a subject at least 60 cm away for optimal focus in its troubleshooting guidance; Samsung’s recommendations vary by device and lens. Those measurements are not universal rules for every phone.

Close-up depth of field can also leave the edges of a document or subject soft even when the center is focused. Google notes this behavior on Pixel Pro models with larger sensors, and Samsung says focus range depends on factors including aperture, shooting distance, and subject position.
- Move farther from the subject, tap to focus, and reframe the shot.
- If your phone offers a macro or close-focus mode, try it for a very near subject.
- Choose a lens intended for the subject’s distance. Some phones switch lenses automatically as you zoom; available manual lens controls depend on the model and software.
Samsung’s support page gives device-context examples including at least 12 inches for a standard lens and 20 inches for a telephoto lens. Its 2026 guidance lists 30 cm as the minimum shooting distance for the 5x telephoto camera on the S25 Ultra and 80 cm for the 5x telephoto camera on the S26 Ultra. These examples illustrate why focus distance should be checked for the exact phone and lens, not applied as a universal standard.

Why do I see glare, halos, lines, or distortion?
Dirty glass, protectors, and bright light
Fingerprints, dust, cases, camera covers, and protectors can scatter or block light. Google says dirt or obstruction can cause blur, halos, lines, or color distortion; Samsung warns that protectors can affect focus or distort light. A strong light aimed toward the camera can also create flare, halos, or washed-out areas. Clean the glass, remove overlapping accessories for a test, and change the shooting angle. Samsung notes that streaks can be more noticeable with a dirty lens or high zoom.
Indoor lighting and image-processing artifacts
Some indoor lights can produce flicker or dark lines in photos and video. Samsung describes a model-specific shutter-speed adjustment for this problem, so check your phone’s own camera settings rather than copying a setting from another model. Google also notes that HDR+ rendering can occasionally introduce unexpected line patterns on Pixel 3a and earlier. If lines appear, test in different lighting to see whether the effect changes.

Accessories, magnets, condensation, or damage
Apple says lens converters, metallic cases, or magnetic mounts may worsen low-light motion blur in some situations. Strong magnets near supported iPhone camera sensors can interfere with optical image stabilization and closed-loop autofocus; this is a documented iPhone-specific issue, not a claim about all phones or accessories. Remove the accessory and retest.
Samsung says condensation after a temperature change can make the camera hazy and should clear naturally. If haze appears internal, does not clear, or comes with visible damage, contact device support rather than trying to clean inside the camera. General troubleshooting cannot establish remotely whether a particular camera module is defective.

When should I get the camera checked?
Seek manufacturer or qualified repair support if the camera glass is cracked, internal condensation is visible, or blur persists after cleaning, removing accessories, refocusing, improving light, and testing another camera or lens. A fixed-area blur across different scenes can justify an inspection, but it does not by itself identify which component has failed.
