If a PNG made with Perl’s WWW::Mechanize::Firefox shows the page but omits its background colors or images, first check whether Firefox is applying its print-background setting to the capture. Enable background colors and images in Firefox’s print options, then capture again. If that setting is unavailable or does not stick, inspect the printer-specific print_bgcolor and print_bgimage preferences. This is a historical diagnosis, not a guarantee for every combination of Firefox, WWW::Mechanize::Firefox, and MozRepl; also confirm that the background assets have loaded and that your installed versions work together.
What causes backgrounds to disappear?
The symptom is specific: the page’s text and foreground content appear in the saved PNG, but CSS background colors or background images do not. A 2011 Stack Overflow question about WWW::Mechanize::Firefox described that behavior. The accepted explanation was that the capture behaved like printing a webpage, where printing backgrounds is disabled by default. The original asker later said enabling the setting fixed the problem in that setup, and added that they had to wait for background images to download.
That report is a useful first diagnostic, but it does not establish how every release of the Perl module captures pages. MetaCPAN documents content_as_png as the method for returning the selected tab or current page as a PNG, with optional cropping coordinates and target-size scaling. The cited documentation does not establish that all versions use a print pipeline internally. Treat the print setting as the first fix to test, rather than assuming it is the cause in every environment.
There are two other possibilities to keep in view. A background image may not have loaded when the capture occurs, and the Firefox–MozRepl integration may be incompatible with the browser version. If changing the print setting makes no difference, check those possibilities instead of repeatedly toggling the same option.

Try Firefox’s print-background option first
- Open the page in the Firefox instance controlled by your script and confirm that its background is visible in the browser.
- Open Firefox’s print interface and look in its Options tab for the setting to print background colors and images. Mozilla Support describes the setting in the print menu; the label and location can vary by Firefox release and platform.
- Enable the background option, then run the capture again and compare the saved PNG with the visible page.
This is the simplest route to try because it uses a visible Firefox control rather than editing preferences. The historical support guidance does not establish that every current Firefox build exposes the same control, or that its state will persist for every printer and capture setup. If the option is missing or the result is unchanged, use the preference route below only if the relevant preferences exist.
Check printer-specific preferences if the print option is missing
An archived Mozilla Support answer describes a fallback in about:config: look for printer-specific preferences whose names end in print_bgcolor and print_bgimage. If a preference for the printer in use exists and is false, that guidance says to change it to true. The preference names are printer-specific, so do not assume a generic entry will apply to your active printer.

- In Firefox, open
about:configand accept the warning if prompted. - Search for
print_bgcolor, then identify an entry associated with the printer used by the print or capture setup. - If that entry exists and is false, change it to true. Repeat the check for the matching
print_bgimagepreference. - Capture the page again to see whether colors and images now appear.
Changing a preference is less straightforward to reverse than checking a print-dialog option, and the archived community instructions date from 2019. Firefox’s preference names and behavior can change. Adjust only an existing, relevant printer-specific entry; if you cannot identify one, leave preferences alone and investigate the capture mechanism and asset loading.

Capture only after the page and its background assets are ready
A browser can display a page before every image has finished loading. If the print-background setting appears correct but a background image is still absent, compare the capture with the live page and consider whether the script takes the PNG too early. In the 2011 report, the original asker said they needed to wait five seconds for the background images. That was one person’s observation about one page, not a general wait time to copy into every script.

Prefer a wait tied to the page’s real readiness condition over a fixed delay when your application can identify one—for example, a known element or a signal from the page indicating that its content is ready. The available documentation cited here does not establish a universal wait API or a reliable JavaScript expression for every WWW::Mechanize::Firefox version, so check the method and options documented for the version you have installed. A longer delay cannot fix an image that is blocked, unavailable, or referenced incorrectly by the site’s CSS.
For a basic capture, the documented method is content_as_png. The following illustrates the simple method call and writing returned PNG bytes to a file; it assumes your installed module can start or connect to a working Firefox session and that its documented method returns PNG data in the context you are using:

Verify the constructor, lifecycle, return value, and any capture arguments against the documentation for the exact version installed. The documented method supports optional cropping coordinates and target-size scaling, but those options affect the captured region or dimensions; they are not a substitute for enabling backgrounds or waiting for the page’s assets.

A background-setting change cannot repair a broken browser-control connection. WWW::Mechanize::Firefox is a legacy integration, and its compatibility depends on more than the Perl code: Firefox, MozRepl, and the module must be able to work together. A 2014 Perl.com article update by brian d foy states, “In 0.55, Firefox removed the features which allowed MozRepl to work.” That is a historical warning about a particular version, not a complete description of current support or a claim that every later setup fails in the same way.

Before diagnosing a screenshot as a CSS issue, record the installed versions of Firefox, WWW::Mechanize::Firefox, and MozRepl. Confirm that the automation session starts, navigates to the intended page, and can return any PNG at all. If the connection fails or the capture method errors before producing a file, resolve compatibility first. The cited sources do not establish a current universal version matrix, so do not assume a particular Firefox release is supported without checking the documentation and behavior of your own installed components.
Troubleshoot by symptom
- The whole page appears, but its backgrounds do not: Enable print background colors and images in Firefox’s print options and retry. If unavailable or ineffective, check for relevant printer-specific preferences ending in
print_bgcolorandprint_bgimage. - Background colors appear but an image does not: Check whether the asset is loaded before capture and whether the image is available to the browser. A print setting will not make an unloaded or inaccessible image appear.
- The page looks right in Firefox, but the saved PNG is stale or incomplete: Check when the script calls
content_as_png. Wait for a page-specific readiness condition where possible; do not treat the five-second delay in the 2011 report as a universal fix. - No PNG is produced or the script cannot control Firefox: Check that the automation connection works and confirm compatibility among Firefox, MozRepl, and the Perl module. A capture setting will not fix a broken control connection.
- A preference is absent or the result does not change: Do not create arbitrary printer preferences based on a different setup. Recheck the Firefox version and capture path, then consult the documentation matching the installed module and browser.
- The PNG is cropped or scaled unexpectedly: Review any cropping coordinates or target-size scaling arguments passed to
content_as_png. These options change image framing or dimensions, not whether backgrounds are enabled.
