If ONNX Runtime Web is asked to use four WebAssembly threads on a page that is not cross-origin isolated, it can continue inference with one thread instead. The current upstream runtime warns and resets the effective thread count; it does not make the requested count work in an unsupported browser context. In one developer-reported benchmark, that fallback coincided with a median steady-state inference time of 6,318 ms, compared with 2,133 ms for four threads on an isolated page. Those figures describe one setup, not a general speedup guarantee.
Why does numThreads fall back to 1?
ONNX Runtime Web’s WebAssembly backend can use multiple threads only when the browser supports WebAssembly multithreading and the page is in crossOriginIsolated mode. Setting ort.env.wasm.numThreads = 4 requests four threads; it cannot supply a capability the page does not have.
In the current upstream implementation, when more than one thread is requested but multithreading is unavailable, the runtime logs: “WebAssembly multi-threading is not supported in the current environment. Falling back to single-threading.” It then sets the effective thread count to one before initialization. The source also notes that a single-thread configuration creates no WebAssembly worker. This is a fallback, not necessarily a session-creation failure. The behavior and warning are visible in the mutable ONNX Runtime Web WASM factory source; implementation details may change between releases.
What do the 6,318 ms and 2,133 ms results show?
Developer hao jia reported these median steady-state inference times on September 29, 2026, using ONNX Runtime Web 1.27.0, an ISNet INT8 model, a 1024×1024 input, an Apple M4 machine with 16 GB of memory, and an open-source Chromium 149 build:

| Page and requested WASM threads | Reported median |
|---|---|
| Cross-origin isolated; four threads | 2,133 ms — hao jia, 2026 |
| Not cross-origin isolated; four requested, fallback to one | 6,318 ms — hao jia, 2026 |
| Cross-origin isolated; one thread | 6,313 ms — hao jia, 2026 |
In that test, the non-isolated run completed without an exception, printed two warnings, and performed close to the isolated single-thread run. The comparison is useful evidence that the fallback can matter for this workload, but it is one author’s benchmark—not an independently replicated result, an average across applications, or a promised threefold improvement. Model, input, browser, hardware, provider, and measurement method all affect inference time. Benchmark the configuration you intend to deploy, using the same warm-up and steady-state method for each comparison.
How can you check whether the page can use multiple WASM threads?
Check the state in the browser context where the inference page actually runs, and inspect the response headers delivered for that page. The documented prerequisite is browser support for WebAssembly multithreading plus crossOriginIsolated being true. In the cited reproduction, the page became isolated with these response headers:

The reproduction observed crossOriginIsolated === true with both headers and false when neither was sent. That is a configuration example, not a complete deployment recipe: cross-origin resources and other parts of your site may be affected by the policies. Verify the headers on the actual production response and confirm the state from the page that creates the session. The benchmark report describes this check and the corresponding warning at hao jia’s benchmark report.
How should you set and monitor the thread count?
ONNX Runtime Web documents numThreads as including the main thread. A value of one disables multithreading. A value of zero lets the environment choose; the documented browser choice is half of navigator.hardwareConcurrency or four, whichever is smaller. For a deliberate count, configure the flag before creating an inference session, as recommended in the ONNX Runtime Web environment flags and session options documentation.

If the application should use four threads only when isolation is available, select the value explicitly and surface the degraded configuration through an application-owned diagnostic:
ort.env.wasm.numThreads = globalThis.crossOriginIsolated ? 4 : 1;
if (!globalThis.crossOriginIsolated) {
console.warn("ONNX Runtime Web is using one WASM thread: this page is not cross-origin isolated.");
}
// Create the inference session after setting env.wasm.numThreads.
This follows the benchmark author’s tested mitigation, which reported { isolated: true, threads: 4 } and { isolated: false, threads: 1 } on the two test servers. Adapt the count to your application rather than treating four as universally optimal. In production, monitor the isolation state or emit a first-party telemetry event; do not rely on developers noticing a console warning.

Does the same fallback apply to WebGPU?
The fallback discussed here concerns ONNX Runtime Web’s WASM multithreading. The official documentation describes WASM as the default CPU execution provider and WebGPU as a separate provider. In the same benchmark, reported WebGPU medians were 355 ms without isolation and 359 ms with isolation. That small difference is limited to the author’s test and does not establish that WebGPU is always unaffected by cross-origin isolation or other deployment conditions. Compare providers independently on your target environment.
Will a proxy worker fix the slowdown?
No. ONNX Runtime’s performance guidance describes a proxy worker as a way to move heavy work off the main thread so the interface remains responsive; it does not improve model performance or override the WASM thread fallback. The documentation also identifies limitations involving WebGPU and pages with restrictive Content Security Policy settings. Consider it for responsiveness, not as a substitute for enabling cross-origin isolation or choosing a supported thread configuration. See the ONNX Runtime Web performance guide and environment flags documentation.
