“One community” resonates in cybersecurity because attacks and digital infrastructure cross the boundaries between companies, sectors, and countries. No single organization sees every threat or can protect every connection. Community matters when it turns that interdependence into practical cooperation: sharing intelligence and experience, developing skills, and coordinating responses.

What “one community” means in cybersecurity

The phrase describes a shared mission, not a claim that everyone in security has the same role or priorities. At a 2023 cybersecurity championship, NIST Director Rodney Petersen addressed competitors from seven teams spanning multiple countries and continents: “Finally, while you represent 7 teams from multiple countries and continents, we are of ONE COMMUNITY – the Cybersecurity Community.” He said competitors become colleagues working to defend cyberspace and build more secure technologies. NIST’s remarks

The idea is useful because isolated defenses have limits. Organizations depend on shared infrastructure, suppliers, software, and services; an incident or vulnerability affecting one part of that environment can matter to others. The Internet Governance Forum’s 2024 Best Practice Forum on cyber capacity building makes a related point: “A challenge faced in one community could offer valuable lessons for an organisation in another part of the world.” IGF Best Practice Forum

How cybersecurity community cooperation works

Sharing knowledge and threat intelligence

Organizations can learn from one another’s observations, expertise, and experience. Threat-intelligence exchange can help defenders recognize relevant activity and make more informed decisions, while research and education help develop the knowledge and skills needed to respond. The benefit depends on useful exchange and active contribution; calling a group a community does not itself ensure that information is shared or acted on.

At a global level, the World Economic Forum’s Centre for Cybersecurity is described as a public-private platform with more than one hundred partners across technology, governments, international organizations, academia, and civil society. European Union Digital Skills and Jobs Platform, 2024

Coordinating across borders

The IGF’s 2024 forum argues that cyber capacity building should involve government, industry, schools, universities, and communities. Since infrastructure is interconnected, building the ability to prevent and respond to cyber risks is not solely a government or technical-team task. A lesson learned in one place may help an organization elsewhere, even when the participants do not belong to the same formal group. IGF Best Practice Forum

Extending protection beyond security specialists

Community work can also include people who are not cybersecurity professionals. The RSAC 2025 trends report says conference submissions addressed community engagement, cybersecurity awareness as a community service, the cybersecurity poverty line, collaboration, supply-chain security, and third-party risk. These topics connect individual awareness and organizations’ dependencies to broader resilience. RSAC 2025 trends report

What “Many Voices. One Community” means at RSA Conference

RSA Conference’s themes page presents community as something built through people, different perspectives, knowledge sharing, and support. Its 2025 theme was “Many Voices. One Community”; its 2023 theme was “Stronger Together.” The contrast captures an important idea: security teams and organizations can have different experiences and viewpoints while still working toward the shared goal of making digital systems safer. SecurityWeek’s April 17, 2025 analysis interprets the 2025 theme as a response to the need for sharing, collaboration, interoperability, and cooperation on threat intelligence. It reported 531 sessions, 600 exhibitors, and more than 40,000 delegates for RSA 2025. Those figures describe the scale of that particular conference, not proof that attendance alone improves security. SecurityWeek, April 17, 2025

Does collaboration improve resilience, or is it just networking?

It can improve resilience when interaction produces something defenders can use: timely information, transferable lessons, stronger capacity, or coordination across organizational boundaries. Networking can help people find partners and expertise, but it is only a starting point. A group’s value depends on whether members can contribute, exchange relevant knowledge, and apply what they learn.

“One community” is therefore best understood as a shared responsibility across distinct organizations and people—not as one central team, a single point of view, or a guarantee against cyberattacks.
