Oganesson is not literally predicted to have no electrons or no shell structure. A 2018 theoretical study found that its valence electrons may form an unusually smooth, gas-like distribution, with the familiar shell pattern far less distinct in an electron-localization analysis. Its conventional electron configuration still ends in a filled 7p subshell.

Where oganesson sits—and what its configuration says

Oganesson (Og) is element 118, in Group 18 and period 7. The Royal Society of Chemistry lists its conventional electron configuration as [Rn] 5f14 6d10 7s2 7p6, which assigns its electrons to filled subshells, including the outer 7p subshell. The Royal Society of Chemistry’s oganesson reference uses this standard orbital description.

That notation and the phrase “no electron shells” address different things. Configuration notation describes how electrons are assigned to orbitals; an electron-localization analysis examines how the calculated electron density is distributed in space. The 2018 result concerns the second description, not a replacement for the first.

Why the predicted shell pattern looks different

In very heavy atoms, electrons close to the highly charged nucleus can move at speeds where relativistic effects matter. For oganesson, those effects strongly alter the valence-electron structure. Jerabek and colleagues’ 2018 theoretical study reports spin-orbit splitting of approximately 10 eV and finds a smooth, gas-like valence region in its electron-localization analysis. The study in Physical Review Letters interprets the distribution as unusually uniform compared with the more distinct localization patterns associated with familiar shells.

In this context, “gas-like” describes the calculated valence-electron distribution; it does not mean that an oganesson atom is a gas, or that its electrons have stopped occupying orbitals. The conventional shell and orbital models remain useful. The striking prediction is that the spatial pattern of localization in the valence region is much less sharply divided into shells.

What is predicted, and what has been observed

The shell-smearing result is theoretical, based on a calculation and its interpretation—not a direct image or measurement of oganesson’s electron distribution. The Royal Society of Chemistry notes that only a few atoms of this highly radioactive element have ever been made, so detailed bulk and chemical properties are principally theoretical. A review of oganesson likewise provides context for the limits of studying the element in the laboratory.

Separate theoretical work has extended predictions from individual atoms to a hypothetical solid. Mewes and colleagues estimated a 1.5 eV band gap for solid oganesson and predicted semiconductor behavior. That value is a calculated property of a proposed bulk material, not a measurement of a sample of solid oganesson. Their 2019 study addresses this distinct question; it does not establish that a bulk sample exists or confirm the atomic localization result experimentally.

How to read the headline

“No electron shells” is a dramatic shorthand for a predicted loss of distinct shell-like localization in one analysis of oganesson’s valence electrons. It should not be read as saying that the element has no electron configuration, no orbitals, or no shells under every scientific model. “Shells blurred” is the more accurate description: the standard configuration remains, while the calculated spatial distribution appears unusually uniform.
