OBS does not appear to impose a fixed runtime limit that automatically ends a stream after a few hours. A stream can stop because the connection to YouTube becomes unstable, the encoder or OBS encounters a local problem, or YouTube changes the broadcast state. Check OBS’s dropped-frame counter and log alongside YouTube Live Control Room’s stream-health status before changing settings or buying equipment.
First, identify what actually stopped
At the next interruption, record the time and check both OBS and YouTube. A viewer seeing the broadcast end does not tell you which side stopped sending or presenting it.
- Note the exact time and time zone.
- Check whether OBS still reports an active stream and whether its dropped-frame counter rose.
- In YouTube Live Control Room, note the stream-health status and any specific error message. YouTube documents that the status includes errors and instructions; its metrics interface can also show stream duration during an event. YouTube: Monitor your live stream
- Save the OBS log covering the failure. Compare its events with YouTube’s message and the time the interruption occurred.
This evidence matters: OBS dropped frames point toward a connection problem, while YouTube’s stream-health message helps show whether incoming video or the broadcast itself is the issue. Without the log, health message, encoder settings, connection type, and broadcast settings, there is no reliable way to name one cause for a particular outage.
If OBS reports dropped frames or disconnects
OBS says dropped frames mean the connection to the remote ingest server is unstable or cannot keep up with the configured bitrate; enough dropped frames can disconnect a stream. Its troubleshooting guide says this is extremely unlikely to be caused by OBS Studio itself. OBS Project: Stream Connection Troubleshooting

Lower the bitrate to match a reliable connection
OBS gives 75% of total upload speed as a starting point for setting bitrate. That is a troubleshooting starting point, not a guarantee that your route to YouTube can sustain the stream continuously. A headline result from one speed test does not establish reliable upload capacity over several hours. Lower the video bitrate, then observe whether dropped frames stop and whether the stream remains stable.
YouTube’s recommended bitrate depends on codec, resolution, and frame rate. Its current encoder table, for example, lists 12 Mbps for H.264 at 1080p/60 fps and 6 Mbps for H.264 at 720p/60 fps. These are table recommendations, not universal prescriptions: choose a setting your connection can reliably sustain and consult YouTube’s current table for your chosen format. Test the network path one change at a time
- In OBS, try another available ingest server, then compare the dropped-frame pattern.
- Temporarily test without a VPN. Check whether firewall, antivirus, or network-optimizer software is interfering. If disabling a security tool changes the result, turn it back on and configure an appropriate OBS exception rather than leaving protection disabled.
- If you use Wi-Fi, test over wired Ethernet. Inspect the cable, router or modem, network card, and other network devices. A known-good cable is a useful test if you suspect a faulty one; buying a cable is not a general remedy for every streaming failure.
- If local checks do not help, contact your ISP with the failure timestamps and pattern. Congestion or routing changes may be outside your control, and OBS recommends contacting the ISP before replacing equipment if you are unsure.
Dynamic bitrate in OBS can lower the bitrate when the connection cannot keep up, which may help avoid a disconnect. It does not fix the underlying network problem and can reduce stream quality, so treat it as a fallback rather than a diagnosis.
If the connection looks stable, check YouTube and encoder settings
Use YouTube Live Control Room’s stream-health message as evidence about what YouTube is receiving. If it says the input is missing or insufficient, compare that message with OBS’s output and the log at the same time. Do not replace hardware or change several encoder options at once based on a generic warning.

YouTube’s live encoder guidance lists H.264, H.265, or AV1 for RTMP/RTMPS, recommends CBR, and recommends a 2-second keyframe frequency (do not exceed 4 seconds). It also advises selecting settings for a reliable connection, testing with representative audio and motion before the event, and monitoring stream health during the event. Use the current YouTube table for bitrate recommendations; older generic bitrate advice may not match your codec, resolution, or frame rate. YouTube live encoder settings
If OBS remains connected but YouTube says the broadcast has ended, investigate YouTube’s broadcast state as well as encoder output. A stream-health warning is a clue about YouTube’s incoming stream, not by itself proof that OBS or YouTube is at fault.

Review scheduled broadcast settings—but do not treat them as a network fix
A community-authored OBS forum guide describes a scheduled-broadcast Auto-stop setting: when enabled, it ends the broadcast after streaming stops and can prevent reconnecting to that same broadcast without scheduling a new one. The guide also says a broadcast eventually ends after multiple hours without incoming stream data even with Auto-stop disabled. This describes broadcast behavior, not proof that a multi-hour runtime limit caused your outage, and turning off Auto-stop will not repair a failing connection.
