OBS can show a 4K, 60 fps canvas or preview while sending YouTube a stream scaled to 1080p. Check OBS’s actual output resolution and encoder first, then verify the resolution YouTube receives in Live Control Room. A viewer seeing only a 1080p playback option does not, by itself, prove YouTube received only 1080p: YouTube transcodes incoming live video into viewer formats.

What the 4K 60fps display in OBS does—and does not—tell you

OBS’s canvas, preview, configured output, and encoded stream are distinct. A 3840 × 2160 canvas at 60 fps describes the scene’s working dimensions and frame rate; it does not prove the active streaming output is encoded at those settings. If OBS scales its output to 1920 × 1080, YouTube receives 1080p even while the canvas remains 4K.

YouTube documents live ingestion at 4K/2160p up to 60 fps, so 1080p is not a universal YouTube Live ceiling. The useful evidence is the stream’s received resolution and frame rate in YouTube Live Control Room, not the canvas readout alone. YouTube’s live encoder settings

Diagnose the stream in this order

  1. Check OBS’s output resolution and frame rate

Open Settings → Video. Compare Base (Canvas) Resolution with Output (Scaled) Resolution, and check the configured FPS. If the scaled output is 1920 × 1080, OBS is set to send 1080p regardless of the canvas dimensions. Menu labels can vary by OBS version.

  2. Confirm what YouTube received

Open the stream in YouTube Live Control Room and check the received resolution, frame rate, and stream health. YouTube normally detects the encoder’s incoming settings. If you use a custom stream key with manually selected stream-resolution settings, verify that its mode does not cap the stream below your intended input. YouTube live encoder settings

  3. Inspect the active encoder and codec

Check the streaming output’s encoder and codec rather than relying on a preview or a recording profile. Make sure the active output is configured for the intended resolution and frame rate, and that the codec matches the bitrate settings you plan to use. YouTube’s documented RTMP/RTMPS setup supports H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1; it recommends CBR and a 2-second keyframe interval, with no more than 4 seconds. YouTube live encoder settings

  4. Match bitrate to 4K60 and the codec

For 4K/2160p at 60 fps, YouTube’s current live-ingestion recommendations list H.264 at 35 Mbps and AV1/H.265 at 10–40 Mbps. These are live encoder recommendations, not upload-video settings. Use the recommendation for the codec actually being sent; a bitrate number alone cannot compensate for an output-resolution setting that is still 1080p. YouTube live encoder settings

  5. Test upload capacity and monitor stream health

Test with representative movement and audio, check available outbound upload capacity, leave bandwidth headroom, and watch YouTube’s stream-health information. An unstable connection can disrupt delivery, but changing to Ethernet will not change an OBS output-scaling setting. YouTube’s streaming tips cover connection and setup considerations.

  6. Separate YouTube’s incoming stream from viewer playback

YouTube transcodes live streams into multiple output formats for viewers on different devices and networks. OBS Project likewise describes transcoding as separate feeds with different resolutions, frame rates, and bitrates. A viewer’s available or selected 1080p option is therefore not enough to establish the input resolution; compare playback options with the received-stream information in Live Control Room. OBS Project: Transcodes / Transcoding

Choose 4K60 or a lower output based on the trade-offs

Before changing equipment, weigh the output you need against the encoder and connection you have. YouTube notes that 4K/2160p streams do not offer its low-latency improvement option and use normal latency. YouTube live encoder settings

Common symptoms and fixes

What you see Likely explanation to check What to do
OBS canvas says 4K, but Live Control Room reports 1080p Output (Scaled) Resolution may be 1080p, or the active output may use different settings. Check OBS Settings → Video, then inspect the streaming encoder’s active output.
OBS is configured for 4K, but YouTube receives a lower resolution A custom stream key’s manual resolution mode may limit the intended input. Check the stream-key mode and confirm YouTube’s received resolution in Live Control Room.
YouTube receives 4K, but a viewer sees 1080p The viewer is seeing a transcoded output or has selected a 1080p playback option. Check the available playback qualities and compare them with YouTube’s received-stream information.
4K60 delivery is unstable Outbound capacity, headroom, encoder capability, or the selected codec and bitrate may not suit the setup. Monitor stream health, test representative content, and verify the codec-specific live bitrate recommendation before considering hardware changes.

A capture card is relevant when an external HDMI source is part of the setup; network hardware is relevant when testing shows an upload reliability problem. Neither is a general fix for a mismatch between OBS’s canvas and its encoded output.
