The title alone cannot identify why the opening seconds are missing: “playlist” could mean an OBS Media Source playlist, or it could refer to what a viewer sees in the YouTube Live broadcast or replay. YouTube’s guidance supports 4K/60 fps and specifies normal latency for 4K, but does not say that this format inherently trims a video’s beginning. First identify where the seconds disappear, then check start timing and stream health.
First identify which playback path is skipping
Watch the source and the public output separately. The distinction determines which settings are relevant.
- OBS Media Source playlist: If the video itself starts late inside OBS, investigate that source’s playback configuration. YouTube’s encoder guidance does not establish how an OBS Media Source playlist starts or explain a trim there.
- YouTube Live preview or public broadcast: If OBS shows the opening but the Live Control Room preview or viewers do not, follow the live-start and stream-health checks below.
- Viewer joins after the broadcast begins: A viewer may not be seeing the broadcast’s true opening. Compare the Live Control Room preview and a recording or replay from the beginning before concluding that OBS removed content.
The exact cause cannot be established without the OBS version, selected encoder and ingest protocol, logs, YouTube stream-health messages, and the point at which the missing seconds are observed.
For a live broadcast, check the start sequence
Make sure the intended content is already playing before you make the stream public. As general workflow context, an older OBS guide describes starting the encoder, checking the Live Control Room preview, and then pressing Go Live; current interface details may differ. When using an adapter, if the device is recognized as USB 2.0, try using the other side with the USB-C port. Simply flip the capture card and reconnect it to be recognized as USB 3.0
- Start the OBS stream or encoder and let the source play.
- Check the Live Control Room preview and confirm that it shows the intended opening content.
- Only then make the broadcast public using the Live Control Room’s Go Live control.
- Compare what the preview showed with the public broadcast or its replay. If the preview itself starts late, investigate the source path; if only the public output differs, check stream health and encoder performance.
Check OBS and YouTube stream health
Before a real event, test with representative movement and audio. OBS advises checking dropped frames and encoding performance; YouTube recommends testing in advance and monitoring stream health. A 4K/60 test can also reveal whether the system can sustain the workload, but success or failure in that test does not by itself prove why opening seconds were skipped.
- Look at OBS’s dropped-frame and encoding indicators during the test.
- Review the Live Control Room’s stream-health messages while the broadcast runs.
- If OBS reports encoding or rendering strain, try a lower output resolution or frame rate and compare another test. OBS recommends reducing these settings when the machine cannot sustain the workload. OBS encoding performance troubleshooting
Verify the 4K/60 encoder settings
YouTube supports live ingestion up to 60 fps and lists a 2160p (4K) 60 fps profile. Its published settings are configuration recommendations, not a diagnosis of this opening-seconds symptom. YouTube’s live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions

| Setting | YouTube guidance for 2160p at 60 fps | How to use it diagnostically |
|---|---|---|
| H.264 bitrate | 35 Mbps recommended | Check that the encoder is configured appropriately for the chosen codec and connection; this figure alone does not establish the cause of a start trim. |
| AV1 or H.265 bitrate | 10–40 Mbps listed range | Use the range for the applicable codec; do not treat it as proof that bitrate is responsible for missing opening seconds. |
| Keyframe interval | 2 seconds recommended; do not exceed 4 seconds | Verify the configured interval, but do not assume changing it will restore the opening. |
| Latency | 4K/2160 streams use normal latency; the option to improve for low latency is unavailable | This affects delay, but YouTube’s guidance does not say normal latency trims the start. |
OBS notes that YouTube transcodes live streams, including the source feed, and that consistent keyframe intervals help quality-selection transitions. Transcoding or a quality transition is not, by itself, evidence that YouTube discarded the opening. OBS on YouTube transcoding
Do not assume HLS is involved
HLS is a specific YouTube ingest workflow, not a synonym for every OBS-to-YouTube stream. YouTube’s HLS guide recommends media segments of one to four seconds and describes playlist sequence behavior; those details do not show that this broadcast uses HLS or that an HLS segment rule caused the reported skip. Troubleshoot by symptom
| What you observe | Likely area to investigate | Next check |
|---|---|---|
| The source starts late in OBS before streaming | OBS Media Source playlist or source playback configuration | Test the source directly in OBS and compare its playback with the broadcast path. The cited live encoder guidance does not specify Media Source playlist behavior. |
| OBS preview is correct, but the Live Control Room preview starts late | Stream startup, ingest, or encoder performance | Start the source before going public; inspect OBS indicators and Live Control Room stream health. |
| Preview is correct, but a viewer misses the opening | Public go-live timing or when the viewer joined | Compare the broadcast’s start and replay with the preview; confirm that the content was running before the public Go Live action. |
| OBS shows dropped frames or encoding strain | System workload or stream performance | Test at lower resolution or frame rate and compare the indicators and output. |
| The stream is delayed, but the opening is present | Normal live latency rather than a confirmed trim | Remember that YouTube sets 4K streams to normal latency; the cited guidance does not identify this delay as lost content. |
