Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →If NYT Strands will not load or your progress seems missing, start by checking whether you are playing in the NYT Games app or a browser, then confirm you are signed in to the right New York Times account. NYT says signed-out progress is stored locally on the device; signing in makes saved progress, statistics, and streaks available across devices and browsers.
Why won’t NYT Strands load?
A loading problem does not by itself show that Strands is down or reveal a specific cause. The New York Times Help Center’s general guidance recommends different first steps depending on whether you use the NYT Games app or a web browser.
If you’re playing in the NYT Games app
- Update NYT Games through your device’s app store, and install available updates for the device operating system.
- Force quit NYT Games, reopen it, and try Strands again.
- Log out of your NYT account in the app, then log back in. Check that it is the account you use for Games.
- If Strands still will not load, uninstall and reinstall the app. NYT says this will not affect Games streaks or statistics.
- If the problem remains, send a report from the app: on iOS, open Settings and choose Report a Bug; on Android, choose Send App Feedback. Include your device, app and operating-system versions, what you see, and whether other games are affected.
These steps come from the NYT Help Center’s mobile app troubleshooting guidance.
If you’re playing in a browser
- Check that the browser accepts cookies. NYT says cookies are required to access an account on nytimes.com.
- If sign-in is failing, clear the browser’s cache and cookies. Stored browser data can be outdated or conflict with login attempts.
- Verify the email address and password. If you linked the account to Google, Facebook, or Apple, try that sign-in option; reset your password if needed.
- If a password manager is filling in the wrong details, temporarily disable it or its browser extension and try again.
For the full account steps, see the NYT Help Center’s browser login troubleshooting page.

Check whether the problem is limited to Strands
Try another NYT game in the same app or browser. If you can, compare Strands in the app with Strands in a browser, or try another device. These checks can help you describe where the failure occurs; they do not establish its cause. When reporting the issue, note the exact error or loading behavior, platform, software versions, and whether you were signed in.
Why isn’t Strands saving my progress?
First check whether you were signed in when you played. The NYT Help Center explains that when you are logged out, game progress is stored locally on the device rather than on the account. Its Games Subscription support article warns that this can lead to losing progress. NYT says to log in to your account to play across multiple devices and web browsers.

If you were signed out, check the original device and browser or app where you played. The help guidance does not promise recovery if local browser or app data has already been deleted, so avoid clearing data or switching devices while relying on signed-out progress. Once signed in, confirm you are using the intended NYT account on each device.
Why did I lose my Strands progress?
A likely explanation supported by NYT’s guidance is that the game was played while signed out, leaving progress on that device instead of saving it to the account. However, the official help pages do not identify a guaranteed way to recover progress that existed only in local storage and was later deleted. They also do not establish that a loading issue has a single Strands-specific cause.

How do I get Strands to sync between devices?
- Sign in to your New York Times account on the device where you play.
- Use that same account when opening NYT Games on another device or browser.
- If progress is still not available, verify the account and troubleshoot the app or browser sign-in using the steps above.
NYT’s Games guidance says logging in is how players access saved progress, statistics, and streaks across devices and browsers. Its overview of The New York Times Games app covers app access.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Will reinstalling the NYT Games app delete my streak?
NYT says reinstalling the app will not affect Games streaks or statistics. Treat reinstalling as a later troubleshooting step, after updating the app and operating system, force quitting and reopening, and logging out and back in. If your progress was only stored locally while signed out, the guidance does not guarantee that reinstalling will restore it.
