NXP bought Jennic to add low-power short-range wireless technology—including IEEE 802.15.4 and ZigBee chips, modules, and software—to its semiconductor portfolio. Announced on 26 July 2010, the deal gave NXP connectivity technology aimed at applications such as smart meters, lighting, building automation, and remote controls.

What NXP acquired from Jennic

Jennic developed low-power wireless radio-frequency (RF) solutions based on IEEE 802.15.4 and ZigBee. NXP’s announcement described the acquired offering as more than a single chip: it included transceivers, chips, modules, and protocol software for ZigBee PRO, 6LoWPAN, and RF4CE. NXP’s 26 July 2010 announcement also said approximately 50 UK-based Jennic employees were expected to transfer to NXP.

That combination gave NXP both wireless hardware and the software foundation needed to build products using those protocols. It fit alongside NXP’s existing mixed-signal semiconductor products and broader wireless offering.

Why NXP said it wanted Jennic

NXP presented the purchase as a way to expand into short-range wireless and serve growing demand for low-power connections across industrial and consumer applications. The company also said Jennic products would gain access to NXP’s worldwide distribution channels.

  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

At the time, NXP President and CEO Rick Clemmer pointed to demand for new applications enabled by low-power wireless RF. Alexander Everke, then executive vice president and general manager of High Performance Mixed Signal, said NXP believed 802.15.4 could enable new applications and replace traditional communications in some industries. Those remarks explain the company’s rationale and expectations in 2010; they are not proof that every forecasted use became widespread.

What applications NXP targeted

NXP identified several areas where Jennic’s low-power connectivity could be used:

The application list reflects NXP’s stated targets, not a claim that every Jennic product supported every use case without additional design work.

What the deal cost and how it was structured

NXP said it acquired 100% of Jennic’s shares for approximately $12.2 million, with the possibility of up to $7.8 million in additional consideration over the following two years if Jennic met performance targets. These were the announced transaction terms, not an estimate of the market value of 802.15.4 or ZigBee products.

How Jennic fit into NXP’s later portfolio

In a later SEC-filed annual report, NXP said its low-power connectivity business began with the Jennic acquisition. The company described that business as 802.15.4-based connectivity ICs with ZigBee and proprietary protocol stacks, and associated the portfolio with smart lighting, smart energy, wireless remote controls and switches, and healthcare monitoring. NXP’s annual report filed with the SEC therefore supports viewing the deal as a portfolio-building acquisition, rather than simply a purchase of one product.

What JN516x documentation does—and does not—show

NXP’s 2019 JN516x ZigBee SDK notes document support for JN516x wireless microcontrollers and ZigBee application development, including JN5169. That provides a concrete example of the technology family and development environment associated with Jennic’s low-power wireless portfolio. The JN516x SDK notes are version-specific historical documentation, however; they do not establish that these parts or development boards are currently sold or supported.

Bottom line

NXP bought Jennic to bring low-power 802.15.4 and ZigBee connectivity—hardware, modules, and protocol stacks—into its wider semiconductor portfolio. NXP’s later account of its low-power connectivity business traces that portfolio back to Jennic, while the available JN516x documentation establishes historical development support rather than present-day product availability.
