If a dashboard’s statement count differs from a fresh query, first check whether they describe the same data source, time window, filters, and aggregation. A dashboard snapshot, a monitoring sample, a cumulative database statistic, and a client-side live-query snapshot can each represent a different scope or moment. The mismatch alone does not show that Node.js, the database, or the dashboard is defective.
What a dashboard number and a live query actually represent
Matching labels such as “statements” or “rows” do not guarantee that two values are comparable. One may be cached or captured earlier; another may reflect current data. They may also use different filters, interval boundaries, time zones, data sources, sampling limits, or aggregation rules.
| Surface | What it may represent | Key comparison risk |
|---|---|---|
| Dashboard snapshot | A value captured or refreshed at a particular time, using the dashboard’s query and settings. | The displayed value may be stale, or its scope may differ from the manual query. |
| Fresh database query | A result evaluated against the database source and consistency behavior used by that query. | It may run later, against another replica or environment, or with different boundaries. |
| Monitoring query sample | Datadog describes its Samples page as a point-in-time view of running and recently completed queries, not necessarily all queries. See Datadog Database Monitoring. | A sample is not a complete history or a reliable total for a reporting interval. |
| Client-side live-query snapshot | In TanStack DB, a snapshot is a captured view of state and data. An older snapshot does not expose rows added in a later revision. See TanStack DB LiveQuerySnapshot. | A component retaining an older snapshot can display an earlier result. A value-only update can create a new snapshot while layoutRevision remains unchanged. |
| PostgreSQL query statistics | Cumulative counters observed over time; Supabase’s guidance compares saved observations and counter deltas. | A reset, upgrade, entry eviction, or decreasing counter can make two observations unsuitable for comparison. |
Capture both results before changing code
Record the dashboard’s value and its capture or refresh time, then run the live query and record its result and execution time. Preserve enough detail to reproduce each observation:
- The query text or equivalent definition, parameters, filters, grouping, and aggregation.
- The database project, environment, tenant, replica, or other source each path used.
- The time zone, interval boundaries, and whether the interval includes its start or end.
- Rounding, duplicate handling, corrections, and any policy for late-arriving data.
- Whether the dashboard value is cached or sampled, and when it was last updated.
These details are diagnostic checks, not a universal dashboard schema. MongoDB’s guidance on point-in-time reads illustrates why the observation time matters: without a consistent snapshot, reads can observe data as it changes. See MongoDB snapshot read concern.

Verify the database source and consistency model
Confirm that the dashboard and manual query target the intended project, database, tenant, environment, and replica. A query sent to a read replica need not have the same visible state as one sent to a primary. Also check whether either path reads a snapshot or performs ordinary reads while writes continue.
MongoDB-specific snapshot behavior
MongoDB documents that local reads during a long-running query may include writes made while that query runs. Snapshot read concern can provide a consistent point-in-time view, including for related queries in a session. MongoDB supports snapshot reads on secondary nodes starting in version 5.0. These details apply to MongoDB; they are not general rules for every Node.js application or database. See MongoDB snapshot read concern.

MongoDB documents a default WiredTiger history-retention period of 300 seconds for this snapshot-query behavior. A snapshot session or query that exceeds the configured retention can fail with SnapshotTooOld. The 300-second value is a documented default, not a universal database limit; increasing retention uses more disk, with the impact depending on workload. See MongoDB snapshot read concern.
Compare PostgreSQL query statistics as observations, not point-in-time totals
PostgreSQL statement statistics are cumulative counters, so a number by itself does not establish what happened during a particular interval. Supabase’s guidance recommends saving observations and matching query entries by (dbid, userid, queryid, toplevel) within the same project instance, then comparing counter deltas. See Supabase pg_stat_statements monitoring guidance.

For a meaningful comparison, use entries present in all relevant snapshots, with unchanged reset and start markers and counters that have not decreased. Discard comparisons across an upgrade, statistics reset, or change to dealloc (entry eviction). If per-statement start information is unavailable, confirm that no per-statement reset occurred. When history or reset provenance is missing, the comparison is unable to assess what happened; begin collecting observations rather than inferring a total from incomplete history.
Supabase’s example returns at most the top 100 rows by total execution time and explicitly treats that as a sample rather than full query coverage. A query missing from such a limited result is not proof that it did not run. Supabase also advises against resetting statistics just to create a baseline. See Supabase pg_stat_statements monitoring guidance.

Do not use query samples as interval-wide totals
Datadog distinguishes its query Samples page from query metrics graphed over a selected timeframe. Samples show running and recently completed queries at a point in time and may omit other queries. Use a sample to inspect an observed statement; use time-windowed metrics when the question concerns activity across an interval. See Datadog Database Monitoring.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Check the client snapshot and render path
If the database result is consistent but a component displays another number, follow the value from the query result into the API response and then into the rendered component. Check which result object the component retained, its loading, error, and readiness state, subscription behavior, and any client-side aggregation or formatting.

For TanStack DB specifically, a LiveQuerySnapshot is tied to the state it captured; an older snapshot cannot reveal rows from a later revision. A value-only update can also produce a new snapshot without changing layoutRevision, so that counter is not a general detector of every value change. These API details should not be generalized to other React or Node.js clients. See TanStack DB LiveQuerySnapshot.
Use tracing to find which Node.js path issued a query
When NestJS observability instrumentation is present, its documentation says that since @nestjs/observe 0.3.0, database queries and outbound requests appear as spans nested under the method that made them. That can help identify the application method responsible for a statement. It does not prove that the dashboard and a separate manual query used the same source, filters, time window, or aggregation. See NestJS observability.
Locate where the values first diverge
Compare the two paths in sequence, using the same captured inputs where possible:
- Raw records or database result: Confirm both observations use the intended source, scope, and cutoff.
- Database-side aggregation: Compare grouping, filters, interval boundaries, time zone, and rounding.
- Dashboard scope and refresh: Check selected filters, cache or sample status, and capture time.
- API response: Inspect the exact value returned to the application, not just the query definition.
- Rendered value: If the payload is correct, inspect client state, snapshot age, aggregation, and formatting.
If the discrepancy first appears in the database result, investigate timing, filters, and source. If it appears during aggregation, compare grouping and rounding. If the API response is correct but the screen is not, focus on client snapshot/state and formatting. This sequence is a practical way to localize the mismatch, not a vendor-prescribed procedure.
