New game consoles can cost more than the systems they replace because component costs and broader market conditions change—and manufacturers can raise prices after a console launches. The clearest examples are recent U.S. price updates from Sony, Nintendo, and Microsoft. Their notices explain the companies’ stated reasons, but they do not provide an independently verified breakdown of each console’s manufacturing costs.
Why can a new console cost more than the previous generation?
A newer console may use costly components, but its price also reflects conditions that can change over time. Microsoft said rising memory and storage prices contributed to its 2026 Xbox price changes. Nintendo cited changes in market conditions expected to continue over the medium to long term, while Sony pointed to continued global economic pressures. These are the manufacturers’ explanations; the announcements do not quantify how much each factor added to a console’s price.
Hardware features can help explain why component costs matter without revealing a full bill of materials. Sony’s 2020 PS5 announcement highlighted its ultra-high-speed SSD and DualSense controller. Microsoft later connected storage and memory prices to its own pricing decision. Neither source assigns a dollar value to an individual feature or establishes the total cost to manufacture a console.
Some consoles are also sold below their manufacturing cost, according to Microsoft’s 2026 Xbox notice. That statement describes a common pricing approach in the company’s account; it does not establish the profit or loss on any particular model from Sony, Nintendo, or Microsoft.

Prices can rise after a console launches
A console’s launch price is not necessarily its price for the rest of its life. In the United States, Sony announced that the PS5 with a disc drive would launch at a suggested retail price of $499.99 in 2020. Sony’s 2026 notice set its recommended price at $649.99, effective April 2, 2026—a $150 nominal increase. This is a comparison of stated U.S. prices, not an inflation-adjusted measure.
Nintendo also announced a U.S. MSRP increase for Switch 2: from $449.99 to $499.99, effective September 1, 2026. Microsoft announced U.S. increases effective August 1, 2026: $100 for Xbox models with 512 GB of storage and $150 for 1 TB models. Its notice also said the 2 TB model would be discontinued.

These notices show that manufacturers can revise prices after launch. They do not mean every console becomes more expensive in every country, or that a retailer’s sale price will match the recommended price.
What manufacturers said about their price changes

Because the explanations differ in detail, it would be misleading to treat memory, storage, inflation, tariffs, or exchange rates as a proven single cause of every increase. The public notices establish what each company said, not a complete cost history or a comparable calculation of each console’s margin.

Launch prices also rose between generations
Even before later price increases, some successor consoles launched at higher nominal prices than their predecessors. Sony announced a U.S. MSRP of $399.99 for PS4 in 2013. In 2020, Sony announced U.S. launch suggested retail prices of $499.99 for the PS5 with a disc drive and $399.99 for the PS5 Digital Edition.

The disc-drive PS5’s launch price was $100 above the PS4’s announced U.S. MSRP, a nominal comparison across different years. It does not show how manufacturing costs changed, and it should not be confused with an inflation-adjusted comparison.

How to compare console prices fairly
Before deciding that one generation is more expensive, make sure the prices refer to equivalent things. Use this checklist:
- Match the market and currency. A U.S. MSRP should be compared with another U.S. MSRP, not a price from a different country.
- Match the edition. A disc-drive model, digital edition, storage tier, or Pro model may have a different price.
- Identify the price type and date. Separate a launch MSRP from a later recommended price and from the amount a retailer actually charges.
- Label nominal comparisons. A dollar amount from one year compared with another does not account for inflation. An inflation-adjusted comparison requires a chosen official index and matched dates.
- Do not infer manufacturing cost from MSRP. A suggested retail price does not reveal component costs, production expenses, or profit on a particular model.
What the available figures do—and do not—show
The dated U.S. examples show two distinct patterns: a successor generation can launch at a higher nominal price, and a console’s recommended price can increase after launch. Microsoft’s notice adds a specific company-reported component pressure; Nintendo’s and Sony’s notices refer to broader market or economic conditions.

The announcements do not establish a complete manufacturing-cost history for each generation, the amount of profit or loss on each model, the contribution of tariffs or exchange rates to each increase, or one consistent inflation-adjusted comparison. So the most precise answer is that consoles may cost more because manufacturers face changing component and market conditions and may revise prices accordingly; the exact contribution of those factors depends on the console and cannot be calculated from these notices alone.
