If your DEV.to post got zero comments, that alone does not mean it was bad. In a September 2026 article, DEV Community author Obole reported that 86.4% of 494 sampled articles had no comments—but the sample came from five selected tag feeds, not a random sample of the whole platform. When Obole adjusted the comparison for article age, the zero-comment baseline for the age range of their first seven posts rose to roughly 90–93%.
What the 86% figure measures
Obole counted comments and reactions on the 100 most recent articles returned for each of five tags used on their own articles, excluding their own posts. The resulting sample contained 494 articles. In that sample, 86.4% had zero comments and 78.1% had zero reactions. The median for both measures was zero, according to Obole’s report, published September 21, 2026.
| Tag | Sample size | Articles with zero comments |
|---|---|---|
| ai | 100 | 81% |
| webdev | 100 | 82% |
| testing | 100 | 92% |
| discuss | 97 | 85% |
| tts | 97 | 93% |
These are author-reported measurements, not official DEV Community statistics or an independently verified estimate. The sample represents articles surfaced by five particular tag feeds at that time; it does not establish what share of all DEV.to articles receive no comments. Obole also reported that an earlier sample had 85.8% zero comments and 78.3% zero reactions, compared with 86.4% and 78.1% about an hour later. That small change is a reminder that a feed snapshot is a snapshot, not a fixed platform-wide rate.

Obole initially compared their first seven posts, which were one to five days old, with articles returned by current tag feeds. The feed sample had a median age of zero days. Those groups had different amounts of time to collect comments, so the comparison made the author’s seven zero-comment posts look more unusual than a like-for-like comparison might.

To examine age, Obole counted 2,393 articles in age buckets. The share with at least one comment was 12.5% for articles aged zero days, 10.1% at one day, 6.7% at two to three days, and 7.5% at four to seven days. From those figures, Obole estimated a zero-comment baseline of roughly 90–93% for the age range of the first seven posts. In other words, age adjustment made seven posts with no comments look more ordinary in this comparison, not more concerning.
That estimate is still limited. The age groups came from deep pages of tag feeds, not a random selection of older articles, and the feeds reportedly reached back only about seven days. Older pages may be selected in ways that affect the apparent rates. The figures therefore do not prove that comments generally decline as every article ages, and they should not be extrapolated to older posts.

Does zero comments mean a post was bad?
No conclusion about quality follows from a zero by itself. A comment count is an outcome, not a rating. To interpret it, a writer would need a relevant comparison group and a defined period in which posts could accumulate comments. Obole’s selected-tag sample offers some context for the author’s own posts, but it cannot judge whether any individual article was good, useful, or well written.
As Obole put it, “A zero is only informative against a base rate. Without one, a zero does not say nothing — it says nothing while looking like it says something.” The key is not to turn silence into a verdict without first asking what a typical result looks like for comparable posts.

What comments and reactions cannot tell you
Comments and reactions are engagement measures. They do not show how many people were shown an article or how many read it. Obole separately reported 118 article views and no clicks through to their site from 23 tagged outbound links. The public tag endpoint did not expose other authors’ page-view counts, so this analysis could not determine whether DEV.to distributed Obole’s articles to fewer people.
That distinction matters: a post can receive little visible engagement for reasons the reported data cannot separate. The figures do not establish whether reach, reader interest, timing, topic, writing, or another factor explains any particular result.

What changed after the analysis
Obole’s eighth article received twelve comments: five from two other people and seven replies by Obole. It complicates the idea that the earlier run of zeros was an enduring property of the author’s work. But one later post cannot show that the writing improved, or that tags or posting time caused the conversation; several things changed at once.

The useful takeaway is narrower: early silence is not enough evidence to condemn your writing. Look for an age-appropriate baseline, keep comments distinct from reactions and views, and avoid claiming more than your sample can show.
