Motion-triggered lights can switch off while you are still in the room because the sensor or automation stops registering movement and its timeout expires. A mmWave presence sensor is designed to detect smaller movements, so it can help keep an occupied room’s lights on while someone sits or sleeps. It is not a guarantee: the sensor must be configured and connected to an automation that controls the lights.

Why motion-sensor lights turn off while you are still there

A motion sensor typically triggers when it detects movement. If you sit still for longer than the automation’s delay, the system may treat the room as empty and turn the lights off. The exact behavior depends on the sensor and the automation’s settings.

Presence sensing aims to answer a different question: is someone still in the space? Aqara describes its FP2 mmWave sensor as detecting slight movement, including when someone is sitting or sleeping, while describing PIR as motion-based sensing. That is the manufacturer’s description, not an independent comparison of performance. Aqara FP2 product details.

Can mmWave radar detect someone sitting still?

It is designed to detect subtle movement that a conventional motion-triggered setup might miss. “Sitting still” does not mean absolutely motionless: small movements can still occur. Do not treat a product’s presence-detection claim as a guarantee that it will detect every person in every room or eliminate false readings.

Its minimalist design blends seamlessly into any modern interior, delivering powerful functionality without visual clutter.

Aqara’s FP2 page says the sensor can provide presence detection even for slight movements, but that wording is a company claim rather than independently verified performance. There is no comparative performance figure in the cited official materials that establishes how much more reliably mmWave keeps lights on than PIR.

How a presence sensor keeps smart lights on

The radar does not control the lights by itself. The sensor reports a presence state; a smart-home platform or compatible automation must use that state to switch lights on or keep them on. Aqara gives an example of using presence in a configured kitchen zone to turn on that zone’s lights. See the FP2 product page.

Akamatis Human Presence & Light Sensor Litos v3, mmWave Smart Motion Sensor, 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi, Adjustable Sensitivity, Requires Home Assistant (White, 1 Pack)
  • 【mmWave Radar Detection】 Features the HLK-LD2401 24GHz mmWave radar, capable of detecting both motion and stationary objects up to 20 ft (6 m) indoors. The compact Seeed XIAO ESP32-C3 and external antenna provide reliable Wi-Fi connectivity with improved range and stability.
  • 【Home Assistant Required】 Works exclusively with Home Assistant, an open-source platform for local smart home control and automation. Requires an existing Home Assistant installation. Basic familiarity is recommended.
  • 【Integrated Ambient Light Sensor】 LITOS v3 includes an integrated VEML7700 light sensor, as many automations rely on both presence and lighting conditions. Its sensitivity closely matches the human eye, allowing accurate ambient light readings — ideal for rules such as turning lights on only when someone is present and the room is dark.
  • 【Refined, Light-Permeable Front Design】 The front panel is made from high-quality 3D-printing filament, allowing ambient light to pass through naturally. This ensures accurate light measurements and adds a subtle, modern aesthetic.
  • 【Ready-to-Use ESPHome Firmware】 LITOS v3 comes pre-flashed with ESPHome, making setup straightforward. No manual flashing or additional configuration is required.
  1. Check compatibility. Confirm that the sensor can connect to your hub or smart-home platform and that the platform exposes a usable presence state. Aqara lists HomeKit, Home Assistant, Alexa, and Google Home support for the FP2. Current setup options depend on the platform and integration; Home Assistant documents an Aqara integration and direct FP2 addition through HomeKit Controller. See Home Assistant’s Aqara integration documentation.
  2. Place and configure the sensor. Follow the model’s guidance for mounting, coverage, and sensitivity. If it supports room zones, define the area whose occupancy should control each light. Aqara’s FP2 user manual describes model-specific settings.
  3. Build the lighting automation. Set presence in the relevant area to turn on the associated lights. Decide what should happen when presence clears, including any absence delay your sensor or platform supports.
  4. Test the room in normal use. Check that the lights stay on while you sit in the places where you spend time, and that they switch off after you leave. Adjust placement, sensitivity, zones, or the absence delay if the behavior is wrong.

What to check before choosing a mmWave sensor

  • Power: The FP2 must remain powered, according to Aqara. That is a constraint of this model, not proof that every mmWave sensor is wired. Check the power method for the exact device you are considering.
  • Platform support: Verify compatibility with your hub and the presence states or controls exposed by its current integration. A brand’s ecosystem list does not guarantee that every feature works identically on every platform.
  • Room setup: Consider whether you need zones, multi-person tracking, or separate lighting behavior for different parts of a room. These features and their setup effort vary by model.
  • False readings and delays: Check whether the device offers sensitivity and an absence-confirmation period, and how those settings work. Aqara’s FP400 documentation describes those controls and warns that tracking can become unstable when people are close together. Those details apply to the FP400 documentation; they should not be assumed to describe the FP2 or every mmWave sensor. See Aqara FP400 documentation.

What the first-person result does—and does not—show

Replacing motion sensing with mmWave presence sensing can address the specific frustration of lights timing out while someone remains in the room. The result still depends on placement, sensor settings, platform compatibility, and the lighting automation. A single reported experience is not proof of long-term reliability or a guarantee for another home.
