Common Markdown pipe tables cannot represent merged cells: their syntax lays out a regular grid of cells, with no marker for a cell to span rows or columns. If you need spans, use an HTML table with colspan or rowspan if your publishing platform allows it; otherwise, repeat labels, split the table, or explain the grouping in prose.
What “Markdown tables” means here
Pipe tables are not part of the CommonMark core specification. They are an extension added by formats such as GitHub Flavored Markdown (GFM), and Markdown implementations do not all support the same extensions. So the limitation applies to common pipe-table formats, not to every custom table extension or every document that includes Markdown. The GFM specification defines a header, a delimiter row, and body rows, but no syntax for merged cells.
Why pipe-table syntax cannot merge cells
A pipe table describes each row as a sequence of cells separated by pipe characters. The rows form a regular grid; the syntax has no span marker or cell-attribute mechanism to say that a cell should occupy neighboring columns or rows. This is a limitation of the table syntax, not of HTML: HTML represents these relationships with colspan and rowspan.
Choose a workaround that fits your output

If HTML is permitted, use an HTML
<table>for the table that needs spans. Add the appropriate attribute to the cell that should cover multiple columns or rows. -
Preview the published result. Some renderers filter HTML or handle it differently, so do not assume the attributes will survive just because the source contains them.

If the result is unsupported or hard to edit, return to pipe-table syntax and repeat labels, divide the data into separate tables, or explain the grouping in text.
MDN’s authoring guidance is to use GFM Markdown where it works and fall back to raw HTML when needed or clearer. The practical choice depends on the renderer and whether the visual span is essential.
