Low-code platforms often take on more integration work as applications spread across systems—but that does not mean every vendor becomes a full integration-platform-as-a-service (iPaaS) provider. The shift happens when an app’s needs grow from connecting to a service into coordinating data, APIs, and business processes across an organization.

Why integration becomes part of low-code platform work

Low-code tools help teams build applications and workflows with less hand-written code. Those applications rarely stand alone: they need data from other systems, must call services, or participate in processes that span departments. Gartner’s 2025 description of enterprise low-code application platforms (LCAPs) identifies integration demands alongside delivery speed and legacy complexity as challenges for enterprise software teams (Gartner’s 2025 LCAP research).

That creates pressure for a platform to make integrations easier to build, govern, and operate. The pressure is not a universal product destiny. Some platforms provide connectors and API access for applications; others may offer wider integration capabilities. A company may also keep integration work in a separate platform or in existing middleware.

Low-code and integration platform are not mutually exclusive labels. Gartner’s definition of iPaaS includes low- or no-code development environments. The practical distinction is the job being done: is the tool helping one application reach another system, or managing a portfolio of integrations across systems, data, and processes? (Gartner’s iPaaS definition)

Three kinds of integration—and why they differ

Microsoft groups integration patterns into data, application, and process integration. They solve different problems, so a connector that is sufficient for one application may not be enough for a cross-system business process (Microsoft’s modernization guidance).

Data integration

Data integration combines information from different sources to provide a unified view. Keeping a local copy of data can improve performance, but this pattern does not itself create real-time logic or coordinate a process. It is useful when an application needs a consistent view of information without making every interaction depend on a live call to another system.

Application integration

Application integration connects systems at the application layer, commonly through APIs or low-code connectors. For example, an app might retrieve a customer record from a CRM. The API or connector defines a boundary between the app and the service, but a live interaction can create runtime dependencies: if the service is unavailable or its interface changes, the app may be affected. The connection also needs an appropriate security boundary.

Microsoft’s modernization guidance describes OpenAPI documents as a way to define how a low-code component interacts with a REST API, and API management as a way to govern that boundary. A custom connector can therefore offer a controlled interface rather than embedding service-specific behavior throughout an application.

Process integration

Process integration links systems that take part in a business process. A workflow spanning customer, finance, identity, and operational systems may need coordination, error handling, monitoring, and a way to accommodate changes in each participant. Microsoft describes process integration as more decoupled than direct application-level connections, which can help when an organization modernizes one part of a process while legacy systems continue to handle others.

When a connector stops being enough

A direct connector is often a reasonable fit when an application needs a bounded interaction with another service. The decision changes when teams must operate many integrations as a portfolio or when flows need transformation, orchestration, shared governance, and production monitoring.

For illustration, reading a CRM record from a low-code app is a narrower responsibility than coordinating a customer update across CRM, ERP, identity, and an event stream, with retries and operational oversight. The second case raises questions about failure recovery, ownership, version changes, and visibility that a connector alone may not answer.

Gartner’s 2026 iPaaS capability description goes beyond connector counts: it includes API access policies, connectors, transformation, orchestration, runtime options, security, and support for application and data integration, process automation, service composition, and AI adoption (Gartner’s iPaaS definition). This is a description of the category’s scope, not evidence that every product has equivalent features.

Choose an integration approach by the work it must own

Compare actual requirements rather than relying on product labels. Gartner’s comparison of integration approaches highlights portfolio size, transformation, operational responsibility, on-premises reach, flexibility, and available skills as decision factors (Gartner’s cloud-integration comparison).

Decision axis What to evaluate
Portfolio size and complexity Gartner says integration platform software is best suited when an organization must manage a large integration portfolio and transform data. A few direct connections may not justify that broader operating model. (Gartner)
Transformation and orchestration Determine whether integrations only pass information between applications or must reshape data and coordinate multi-system processes. Gartner lists transformation and orchestration among iPaaS capabilities. (Gartner)
Operations and hosting Gartner describes iPaaS as similar in function to integration middleware but hosted, shifting middleware operational responsibilities to the provider. Check runtime options and which operational controls remain with your team. (Gartner)
On-premises reach Gartner cautions that hosted iPaaS may have more limited ability to integrate deeply with on-premises applications. Validate the current product’s specific connectivity and deployment options before choosing. (Gartner)
Flexibility and control SaaS-native integration tools can be convenient for nontechnical users, but Gartner contrasts them with broader approaches that offer more flexibility and control. Decide whether simplicity or customization is the stronger requirement. (Gartner)
Governance and security For API-based connections, establish who controls access policies, credentials, and interface changes. Microsoft’s API-management and custom-connector guidance treats the API boundary as something to govern, not just a way to make a call. (Microsoft)
Skills and ownership Custom code can be tailored, but Gartner notes that the required skills may not be available internally. Function-platform approaches also require substantial development and cloud-native architecture skills. (Gartner)
Lifecycle and production operations Gartner’s April 2026 iPaaS capability summary lists role-based access, software-development lifecycle support for versioning, testing, and deployment, plus runtime, monitoring, alerting, reporting, and auditing. Check which of these the proposed platform actually supplies. (Gartner)

Keep the architecture modular

Composable architecture offers a useful way to think about the boundary. Applications, APIs, and services can be modular parts of a broader system rather than features that must all live inside one application platform. That preserves flexibility: teams can use a low-code platform where it accelerates application delivery and a separate integration layer where portfolio-wide transformation, orchestration, or operations justify it. Gartner’s 2025 LCAP discussion presents composable architectures and governance as responses to enterprise challenges (Gartner’s 2025 LCAP research).

The aim is not to make every integration an independent project or to centralize everything by default. It is to assign each responsibility—application logic, API access, data movement, process coordination, and operational oversight—to a layer that can meet its requirements.

What the “eventually” claim gets right—and what it overstates

The title captures a recurring pressure, not a rule that every low-code vendor will become an iPaaS vendor. As applications multiply and processes span more systems, integration becomes more central to what teams need from their platform. A vendor may respond by expanding its integration features, while an organization may instead use a dedicated iPaaS, middleware, SaaS-native tools, custom code, or a combination.

Gartner’s 2025 LCAP and iPaaS research cover different vendor sets; those lists describe the scope of particular reports, not rankings or recommendations. Likewise, Gartner’s 2026 iPaaS capability list includes AI adoption among the category’s stated use cases, but that does not establish that every vendor offers equivalent AI capabilities.
