Local AI translation can produce fluent text while getting a financial concept, a number, or the relationship between a figure and its label wrong. Reduce that risk by giving the system context-rich terminology, using finance-specific controls when available, checking every consequential number against the source, and having a qualified bilingual finance reviewer assess high-stakes output. There is no established universal accuracy rate for local AI translation of financial terms.

Why financial terms need more than a word-for-word glossary

A financial term is tied to a concept and its use, not just a dictionary equivalent. The appropriate translation can depend on the language, jurisdiction, product, accounting context, and document. A bare source-word-to-target-word list may not tell a translator or model which sense is intended.

ISO 12616-1:2021 describes basic translation-oriented terminology collections. Its workflow covers collecting, researching, documenting, using, and maintaining terminology, including recording terms found while translating related documents to support consistency. See the ISO 12616-1:2021 standard page and its preview.

A useful entry records the concept and context as well as the preferred equivalent. Have a finance subject-matter reviewer resolve disputed terms; do not assume one translation applies across every jurisdiction or use.

What a finance-aware translation path can—and cannot—do

Some translation services expose domain settings and glossary controls. The European Commission’s eTranslation resource lists a Finance style and user-uploaded glossaries, and describes coverage of all 24 official EU languages and some others. Access is for specified eligible user groups based in EU or Digital Europe-affiliated countries. These are service features, not proof of translation accuracy, and the page does not establish that eTranslation runs locally or offline. Check current eligibility and data-handling terms before using it for sensitive material. See the European Commission eTranslation resource.

Expert input can also help build terminology resources: a 2021 European Commission DG FISMA report describes using machine learning alongside human experts to analyze legal texts and develop dictionaries of regulatory concepts and definitions, including reporting requirements. That example supports an assisted glossary workflow; it does not establish a general accuracy rate. See the Commission report page.

A practical workflow for improving financial translations

  1. Build a context-rich glossary. Record each important term, acronym, product name, account label, or regulatory concept with its source form, preferred target equivalent, definition or concept note, example or context, and any misleading alternative to avoid. Ask a finance reviewer to approve uncertain entries, then maintain and reuse the glossary across related documents.
  2. Supply the source context. Keep headings, tables, footnotes, and surrounding sentences with the text where possible. Identify the jurisdiction, document type, intended audience, and relevant product or accounting context so the translator, model, and reviewer can distinguish similar terms.
  3. Set terminology controls where available. If the translation service supports an approved glossary or finance style, enable it and verify that the output follows it. A setting is a useful constraint, not a substitute for review.
  4. Check figures and their labels against the source. Compare each material amount, currency, percentage, date, decimal or grouping marker, and table association. Confirm that the translation preserves whether an amount is gross or net, owed or paid, and tied to the correct account or reporting category. A 2019 financial-services machine-translation case study identifies terminology and number localization as relevant concerns, but its available summary does not quantify how often errors occur. See the ACL Anthology case-study page.
  5. Review according to consequence. Give close attention to language that could change a payment instruction, balance, rate, fee, obligation, disclosure, or regulatory interpretation. Use a qualified bilingual reviewer with financial-domain knowledge and record approved corrections in the glossary. ISO 5060:2024 covers evaluation of human translation, post-edited machine translation, and unedited machine translation; it also addresses evaluator qualifications and sampling. It is a general evaluation standard, not a finance-specific risk-prioritization rule. See the ISO 5060:2024 standard page.
  6. Check data handling before uploading. For hosted services, review current retention, privacy, and contractual terms before submitting financial documents. The OECD identifies input ownership and privacy, as well as legal responsibility for translation mistakes, as challenges in high-stakes machine-translation settings. See OECD’s Not lost in translation (2023).

How to choose a workflow for sensitive or consequential material

Judge the workflow by what it lets you control and verify, rather than by whether it is described as local, hosted, or AI-powered. Confirm that it supports the terminology controls you need, that a qualified person can evaluate the output, that numbers and labels can be checked against the source, and that its data handling is acceptable for the document. Also confirm access eligibility and whether it truly operates offline; the eTranslation resource is an example of finance style and glossary support, not evidence of local deployment.

The available evidence does not establish model-by-model or language-pair failure rates, a validated local-versus-hosted accuracy comparison, or a universal percentage for financial-term accuracy. Treat fluent wording as a draft, not proof that the financial meaning survived intact.
