Charlisse Leger-Walker chose to play for the Tokomanawa Queens in New Zealand’s 2026 Tauihi season after her rookie year with the Connecticut Sun. She said the decision grew from a chance to play alongside her older sister Krystal, return home after years away, and contribute to women’s basketball. The available reports do not establish that she gave up rest or recovery to do it.
Who is the Kiwi WNBA player?
Charlisse Leger-Walker is a New Zealand guard who joined the Tokomanawa Queens for the 2026 Tauihi Basketball Aotearoa season after her rookie season with the Connecticut Sun. Sport Nation reported that she was selected 18th overall by Connecticut in the 2026 WNBA Draft, making her the first New Zealander drafted into the WNBA. Sport Nation reported her signing on August 31, 2026.
Pacific Media Network (PMN) reported that Leger-Walker made 39 appearances for Connecticut, averaging 7.0 points and 3.6 assists per game. Those figures describe her reported rookie-season performance, not a league-wide average. Sport Nation and PMN also reported that she scored a career-high 17 points against the Golden State Valkyries. PMN’s September 2026 report and Sport Nation’s coverage provide the details.

Why did she choose to play in New Zealand?
A chance to play with her sister
The strongest personal draw was the opportunity to share a team with older sister Krystal. Leger-Walker told Sport Nation that she began considering a return after learning Krystal planned to play in Tauihi again. What started as a joke became a serious possibility: “When I figured out that she was going to play again in the Tauihi League, I thought ‘maybe I’ll just see if I can come back and play’. It started as a joke and then it got really serious real quick.” She explained the decision in a Sport Nation interview published September 3, 2026.

PMN reported that the sisters had not played together since their time at Washington State. Leger-Walker said injuries and Krystal having a baby had kept their paths from crossing as they had hoped, including with the Tall Ferns: “I haven’t played with her since Washington State,” she said. “I thought I would probably get a chance here in the Tall Ferns, but obviously different things happened. I got injured, she’s had a baby, and the paths just didn’t cross as we planned out.” PMN quoted her in its report.
Coming home after years away
Playing in New Zealand also meant being near friends, family, and familiar communities. Leger-Walker told PMN she had not spent more than two weeks at home at a time during the previous six years. “I haven’t been home for longer than two weeks at a time throughout my past six years,” she said.

Leger-Walker framed the move as part of her professional development, not simply a family reunion. She also said she wanted to help expand opportunities and interest in women’s basketball in New Zealand: “I really want to help the game grow, especially for the women, and what better time to do it than right now.” Sport Nation reported those comments.

Did she give up off-season rest?
The reports support saying Leger-Walker chose to play in New Zealand during the WNBA off-season. They do not say she sacrificed a rest period, skipped recovery, or faced a medical trade-off. Nor do they identify a competing overseas contract she turned down. “Gave up off-season rest” therefore goes beyond what the cited reporting establishes.
Her own explanation focused on playing with Krystal, coming home, taking a next step in her career, and helping women’s basketball grow. It does not establish what rest or recovery options she considered.
