In an essay on DEV Community, Serguey Asael Shinder argues that the word can minimize unfamiliar work: if an instruction sounds obvious, someone struggling may conclude they should already know how to do it. That is a useful communication warning, not a measured finding about how often people stop asking.
Why “just” can change how an instruction sounds
“Just” often seems like harmless shorthand to the person giving directions. But it can imply that a task is simple, quick, or should require no explanation. A person encountering it for the first time may then read difficulty as a personal failing rather than a sign that the instruction left something out.
Shinder’s point is that familiarity changes how work feels. Someone who has completed a task many times may no longer remember the obstacles they faced while learning it. As he puts it, “Easy is a fact about the person who has done it.” The phrase captures his argument; it is not a scientific finding.
Where minimizing words can hide the work
The concern extends beyond “just.” Words such as “simply,” “obviously,” and “of course” can also make an instruction sound self-evident when it is not. Shinder illustrates this with familiar workplace situations:

- Setup: “Just run the setup script” leaves out prerequisites that may prevent it from working.
- Code review: “Just extract this into a helper” can make a change sound trivial without clarifying its scope.
- Documentation: “Simply configure the proxy” may gloss over decisions or steps the reader needs explained.
- Estimates: “It is just a new field” can understate related work, such as dependencies or migration tasks.
These examples show how the wording might minimize effort; the essay does not quantify whether or how often it discourages questions.
Replace the assumption with useful detail
A more helpful instruction names the action and adds the context someone needs to carry it out. Shinder contrasts “Run the setup script” with: “Run the setup script, it needs this version installed first, and it takes about ten minutes.” In that example, the version prerequisite and approximate duration are part of the specific instruction, not universal facts about setup scripts.

For a review comment, documentation step, or estimate, check whether the wording explains the actual work:
- Action: What should the person do?
- Prerequisites: What version, access, configuration, or earlier step is required?
- Scope and effort: Are there dependencies, migration work, or other complications to mention?
- Questions: Is it clear that the person can ask about the steps or scope?
Before sending an instruction or review comment, look for “just,” “simply,” “obviously,” and “of course.” They are not automatically wrong, but if one is standing in for an explanation, replace it with the missing detail.

What to do when someone says “just” to you
If a task that is being called easy feels difficult, ask for the concrete step, prerequisite, or expected scope you need. Shinder also suggests asking how long it took the other person the first time. That question can surface the learning curve behind their current familiarity without assuming they intended to dismiss your difficulty.
