iOS 7 replaced stitched-leather calendars, wood-grain bookshelves and glossy, shadowed controls with clearer typography, color and digital layers. Announced on June 10, 2013, the redesign marked a decisive break with skeuomorphism—the practice of making digital objects imitate familiar physical ones. Jony Ive’s argument was that iPhone users no longer needed the screen to pretend to be paper, wood or leather. On that point, he was right: the interface could communicate directly through its own visual language.
What skeuomorphism looked like in iOS
Skeuomorphic design borrows the appearance or behavior of a real-world object to make a digital one feel familiar. In earlier iOS versions, Apple’s Books app resembled a pine bookshelf, Notes looked like a yellow legal pad, and controls used shine and shadows to suggest physical buttons. These details were visual cues: a digital notebook looked like something people already knew how to use.
Apple presented iOS 7 as “the most significant iOS update since the original iPhone,” with a redesigned interface built around refined typography, color, translucency, subtle motion and distinct functional layers. The update also brought major system features, including Control Center, redesigned multitasking, AirDrop and a redesigned Photos app. Apple’s June 10, 2013 announcement framed it as both a visual and broader software update.
Why Ive said the metaphors were no longer needed
The central change was not simply a preference for cleaner graphics. It was a judgment about how people had learned to use touchscreens. In a September 2013 interview, Ive said that people had become comfortable “touching glass”; they understood the benefits and no longer needed physical buttons as a reference. Without that constraint, he said, Apple had “an incredible liberty in not having to reference the physical world so literally” and could make an environment that was “less specific” and got “design out of the way.” (USA Today interview, September 2013.)
#1 Best Overall
- This phone is unlocked and compatible with any carrier of choice on GSM and CDMA networks (e.g. AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, Verizon, US Cellular, Cricket, Metro, Tracfone, Mint Mobile, etc.).
- Tested for battery health and guaranteed to have a minimum battery capacity of 80%.
- Successfully passed a full diagnostic test which ensures like-new functionality and removal of any prior-user personal information.
- The device does not come with headphones or a SIM card. It does include a generic (Mfi certified) charging cable.
- Inspected and guaranteed to have minimal cosmetic damage, which is not noticeable when the device is held at arm's length.
That rationale identifies the trade-off in skeuomorphism. A familiar metaphor can teach a new interaction, but it can also impose rules and decoration from the object it imitates. Once tapping, swiping and scrolling felt ordinary, a Notes app did not need a convincing pad of paper to signal that it was for writing. Typography, spacing and screen behavior could do that work without reproducing a physical notebook.
iOS 7 was not literally flat
“Flat design” is a convenient label for the shift away from glossy buttons and faux materials, but it misses what Apple retained. iOS 7 used translucent surfaces and motion, and Apple described distinct layers rather than one undifferentiated plane. Depth and hierarchy still mattered; they were expressed through interface relationships instead of a simulated leather cover or wood shelf. Contemporary coverage likewise noted both the move to cleaner, two-dimensional graphics and the continued use of translucency and motion. (The Verge’s June 2013 report.)

- Unlocked and Compatible with AT&T / Tmobile and all Service providers that Use AT&T / Tmobile Network. NOT Compatible with Verizon or any service provider that uses Verizon Network. Check before Purchase
- This device is Preowned, Tested and Passed in Excellent Condition, Battery Life Minimum 80% or more as compare to new.
- IOS Version upgradable to 15.8.5 but the device continues to receive security updates under the iOS 15 branch.
- Includes a new cable only. User manual and charger are not included. SIM card is provided by your wireless service provider and is not included with this device.
- 4.7" Retina HD display, 12MP camera and 4K video at 30 fps / 7MP FaceTime HD camera with Retina Flash Black
In other words, Ive’s shift was away from literal imitation, not from every visual cue that helps people understand structure. The design could still indicate what sits above or behind something, where attention should go, and how an interaction changes the screen.

A team redesign, not a solo act
It is fair to call iOS 7 the result of Ive’s design direction, but not to credit him as the sole creator of every screen. Apple described the work as a collaboration across design and engineering. Craig Federighi, then Apple’s software-engineering chief, offered a complementary reason for the visual change: older shadowing could distract from display limitations, while a more precise display made clear typography important. Ive was the redesign’s principal public design voice; the work itself crossed disciplines. (Apple’s announcement; USA Today interview.)

Was removing skeuomorphism good for usability?
The case for the change is persuasive, but it should not be overstated as a proven usability result. Familiar physical metaphors can help when an interaction is new; Ive’s point was that touchscreen conventions had matured enough for those metaphors to become less necessary. Removing decorative imitation made room for a more direct visual vocabulary—type, color, spacing, translucency and motion—rather than requiring every interface to resemble a physical object.
The cited accounts explain Apple’s rationale and document the redesign, but they do not establish through a controlled usability study that every iOS 7 choice improved comprehension or that every user preferred the new appearance. “Ive was right” is therefore a design judgment: literal materials had outlived much of their instructional purpose, even if the success of particular choices remained a matter of experience and evaluation.
