If two Java Integer IDs compare equal with == at 127 but not at 128, the IDs have not changed their numeric meaning: the comparison is checking whether two references point to the same object. Java’s small-value wrapper cache can make separately boxed values from -128 through 127 refer to the same cached Integer. Above that range, separately boxed values commonly refer to different objects. Use a value comparison—usually equals() with a null check, or primitive int values when null is not needed.
Why does Integer comparison work until 127?
int is a primitive numeric value; Integer is an object that wraps an int. Java autoboxing can convert a primitive to an Integer without an explicit constructor call, which can make two different comparisons look more alike than they are.
With two Integer references, == asks whether both references point to the same object. It does not ask whether their wrapped numbers match. The Java SE 8 certification guide cited here describes wrapper caching for values from -128 through 127. When boxing uses the cache, two references for the same value in that range can point to the same instance. That is why the comparison can return true for 127.

The number 127 is the upper end of the cited small-value cache range, not a boundary in numeric equality. Above it, separately boxed values commonly use distinct objects. The guide is educational material for Java SE 8; it does not establish the runtime, Java version, or construction method in any particular program, so the exact result of a snippet can depend on those details.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
What changes when the value is 128?
Consider this illustrative code using autoboxing:
Integer a = 127;
Integer b = 127;
System.out.println(a == b); // typically true: cached reference
System.out.println(a.equals(b)); // true: same wrapped value
Integer c = 128;
Integer d = 128;
System.out.println(c == d); // commonly false: distinct references
System.out.println(c.equals(d)); // true: same wrapped value
The comments describe the usual boxed-value behavior, not a test of your particular program. The important difference is identity versus value: a false result from c == d does not mean the IDs have different numeric values.
Should you use equals() or == for Java IDs?
For ordinary value comparison between non-null Integer objects, use equals(). If either reference might be null, calling its equals() method directly can throw a NullPointerException. A null-safe option in projects whose target Java version supports it is Objects.equals(a, b).

If the ID is never absent and you do not need an object wrapper, use primitive int values. Comparing two primitives with == compares their numeric values, so wrapper identity and caching are not involved.
- Non-null Integer values: use
a.equals(b)to compare wrapped numbers. - Possibly null Integer values: guard against null or use a null-safe comparison such as
Objects.equals(a, b), subject to your project’s Java version. - Non-null primitive IDs: use
intand compare with==.
What if the code is JavaScript?
The title’s 127 boundary points toward Java’s wrapper-cache behavior, but the language matters. JavaScript’s == can convert types, while === does not; strict equality for objects compares identity rather than structural contents. MDN’s JavaScript equality guide does not describe a Java-style Integer cache boundary at 127. If your code is JavaScript, inspect the actual types and expressions rather than assuming Java’s cache explains the result: MDN: Equality comparisons and sameness.

Where the 127 rule comes from
An Oracle Press Java SE 8 certification guide describes Byte, Short, Integer, and Long wrapper caching for values from -128 through 127, and distinguishes reference comparison with == from value comparison with equals(). The guide’s publication year is not established here. Treat the range as an explanation of the commonly taught small-wrapper cache behavior, not a universal cutoff for all languages, identifier types, runtimes, or object-creation paths.
