First check that the SD or microSD card is fully seated and the card door is secured. Then identify whether the Garmin does not detect the card at all or detects it but does not show its map: those problems call for different checks. Exact card capacity and formatting support depend on the Garmin model, so use its manual before reformatting or replacing a card.

1. Reseat the card and check what the Garmin detects

  1. If your device manual says to power off before inserting media, turn the Garmin off.
  2. Remove the card and reinsert it fully in the correct slot. On models with a card door, close it securely.
  3. Turn the device on and check whether it indicates that a card is present. Note whether the card itself is missing or only the map details are missing.

Garmin recommends checking that the card is fully inserted and the door is closed for outdoor handheld map cards. See Garmin’s outdoor-handheld map troubleshooting guidance.

2. If the card is not detected at all

Confirm the card type, capacity, and filesystem

Check the manual for your exact Garmin model to confirm whether it takes SD or microSD, what capacities it supports, and which filesystem it can read. Garmin’s general formatting guidance recommends 32 GB or smaller for maps and other downloaded content, but this is not a guarantee for every device. Some models use exFAT; compatibility varies by model and intended use.

Garmin cautions: “An incorrectly formatted memory card is not compatible with the device and may display error messages or not be recognized at all.” See Garmin’s guidance on 64 GB or larger cards and its memory-card formatting instructions.

Do not format a preloaded map card as a first step

Formatting can erase the map or other card contents. Before formatting, confirm the card’s purpose and the device-specific instructions, and make sure you have a way to restore any needed maps. Do not assume FAT32 is right for every model; Garmin notes that standard Windows formatting tools may not format cards of 64 GB or larger as FAT32.

3. If the card is detected but the map is missing

Check map settings and software

Install any available device software updates, then confirm that the desired map is enabled and that map detail is set high enough to show the information you expect. On outdoor handhelds, multiple enabled maps can affect which information is displayed. Follow your model’s menu labels and manual, since the exact controls vary.

Verify the preloaded map card in BaseCamp

For a preloaded outdoor handheld map card, Garmin recommends checking whether the card and map are visible in BaseCamp. This can help distinguish a map-visibility problem from a card that is not being read by the device. See Garmin’s map troubleshooting steps.

4. Use a JPEG test if your Garmin has Picture Viewer

This test helps narrow down whether the problem is with the card reader or the map data. It applies only to devices with Picture Viewer.

  1. Put a JPEG image in a folder named JPEG on the card.
  2. Insert the card, open Picture Viewer, and check whether the image appears.
  3. If the image displays, Garmin says the reader is working and the map data is likely the problem.
  4. If the image does not display, the card or device reader may be at fault. Try another known-readable card if available.

5. When to contact Garmin Support

If another card also fails to read, contact Garmin product support for help with the device. A second card failing does not establish that the original card was the cause; the device reader may need attention. If the problem is limited to map data, describe whether the card is detected and what happened in the settings or JPEG checks so support can narrow down the issue.
