India’s inclusion in YouTube’s channel-membership availability information does not guarantee that membership gifting is enabled for a particular channel. First confirm the channel is eligible for and has activated memberships in YouTube Studio; then check gifting during a live stream or Premiere. The official YouTube Help guidance reviewed does not establish a separate India-wide restriction or rollout for channel membership gifting.
Memberships and membership gifting are different checks
Channel memberships let eligible channels offer recurring paid memberships. Membership gifting is a separate option for viewers to give temporary memberships during eligible live streams or Premieres. A channel’s general membership availability or eligibility does not, by itself, confirm that gifting is enabled or that the gift option will appear in every context.
Do not confuse membership gifting with YouTube’s separate Jewels-powered gifts feature. YouTube’s creator availability information for Jewels-powered gifts lists India, but that does not establish membership-gifting availability.
Check whether your channel can offer memberships
- On a computer, open YouTube Studio and go to Earn → Memberships. YouTube says the Memberships tab appears only when a channel is eligible. If it is missing, investigate membership eligibility before treating the issue as a gifting problem.
- If the tab is available, complete the membership setup and confirm that you have accepted the Commerce Product Module.
- If you have only just been accepted into the YouTube Partner Program (YPP), allow time for review. YouTube says activation may take up to two days after YPP acceptance.
YouTube’s eligibility page lists the following thresholds for the lower YPP access tier that includes channel memberships: 500 subscribers, three public uploads in the past 90 days, and either 3,000 qualified public watch hours in the past 365 days or 3 million qualified public Shorts views in the past 90 days. Other conditions also apply, including age, location, agreements, and channel-content requirements. These thresholds can change, so check YouTube’s current YPP eligibility requirements before relying on them.

Check where and how you are looking for gifting
YouTube’s instructions place membership gifting in the live-chat context of an eligible live stream or Premiere on a channel with gifting turned on. Check there rather than expecting the option to appear as a general channel setting or on every video. YouTube also says viewers need to opt in to receive gifts; its Help page states: “Once you opt-in, you’re eligible to receive gift memberships from any channel with gifting enabled that you’re subscribed to and have interacted with recently.”
If YouTube cannot verify your country
If the specific message says “We couldn’t verify your country,” treat it as a country-verification or connection issue, not proof that membership gifting is unavailable throughout India. YouTube advises trying another network or device and checking whether a VPN or proxy is active. If you use one, turn it off according to its provider’s instructions and try again.

What India availability does—and does not—tell you
YouTube lists India among the locations for channel memberships generally. Its official Help pages reviewed do not provide a separate country list or confirmed India-specific rollout status for membership gifting. Therefore, if memberships are active but the gifting option is still missing in an eligible live stream or Premiere, the official guidance does not establish a definitive India-specific cause. Check any current prompts in Studio or contact YouTube support about your channel’s status rather than assuming India is categorically excluded.
