Silence on a YouTube radio livestream can come from the radio feed, its routing into your encoder, the encoder’s audio output, the connection to YouTube, or playback on one viewer’s device. Find the first point where audio disappears before changing equipment: compare what you hear in the encoder with YouTube’s Live Control Room preview, any local recording, and reports from other viewers.

First, find out who is affected

Ask whether the stream is silent for one person or for several viewers using different internet connections. If only one viewer reports silence, the problem may be with that viewer’s device, app, browser, or playback settings. If multiple viewers on separate connections hear no audio, investigate the broadcast path—especially the encoder and its connection to YouTube.

Use three clues together: who hears the silence, where audio is still present, and what Live Control Room reports. No single clue identifies the cause in every case.

Trace the audio from the radio source to YouTube

  1. Listen to the source. Check that the radio program or audio feed itself is playing. If the signal is already silent before it reaches the encoder, inspect the source and the way it is routed.
  2. Monitor the encoder’s output. Listen in your streaming software or encoder, not just at the radio source. If the source has sound but the encoder does not, check the selected audio input, routing, mute state, and whether audio is enabled for the stream. The encoder’s own audio output is an early, useful dividing line in the diagnosis.
  3. Read Live Control Room’s error messages. Check the Live Dashboard or Live Control Room for errors and their timestamps. YouTube’s audio guidance includes the message “Your encoder is sending no audio.” It also flags multiple audio streams as a potential problem. Confirm that audio is enabled and that the outgoing stream contains a supported, single audio stream.
  4. Check the preview and a local recording. If available, compare the YouTube preview with an archive recorded locally by the encoder. If the encoder and local recording have sound but YouTube playback does not, the original program source is less likely to be where the audio disappears. Continue by checking stream health and the outbound connection.
  5. Check the internet connection. When the encoder’s output sounds healthy but the YouTube stream does not, YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance points to the outbound connection as another possibility. Test the upload connection; if it shows problems, contact your internet service provider.
  6. Run a representative test before the next broadcast. Test with audio similar to the planned program, inspect Live Control Room’s preview before starting, and monitor audio and stream health during the broadcast.

Use the symptoms to choose the next check

What you find What it suggests Next check
One viewer hears silence, while others hear the stream The issue may be specific to that viewer’s playback rather than the broadcast. Compare playback on another device or connection before changing the broadcast setup.
The source is silent The audio may be missing before it reaches the encoder. Check the radio feed and its source-side routing.
The source has sound, but the encoder output is silent The problem is likely in the input, routing, mute state, or encoder audio configuration. Check the selected input and audio settings, then listen again at the encoder.
The encoder has sound and Live Control Room reports no audio The outgoing stream may not contain the audio YouTube expects, even if audio is audible elsewhere. Check that encoder audio is enabled and that the outgoing stream contains a supported, single audio stream.
The encoder and local recording have sound, but YouTube playback is silent The audio appears to disappear farther downstream than the original source. Review Live Control Room’s errors and stream health, then check the outbound connection.
Several viewers on different connections report silence A shared broadcast-side problem is more plausible than a problem limited to one viewer. Start with the encoder output and Live Control Room rather than replacing equipment.

Fix only the part of the chain that fails

If audio is missing at the source or encoder input

  • Confirm the radio program is actually playing and that its signal reaches the input selected in the encoder.
  • Check the signal route and any mute or disabled-audio setting between the source and encoder.
  • Listen at the encoder again after each change. If its output remains silent, the fault has not yet been isolated to YouTube or the viewer’s playback.

If the encoder produces sound but YouTube reports no audio

  • Check the encoder’s audio-enable setting and the audio stream it sends.
  • Look for a no-audio message, a multiple-audio-stream warning, or another timestamped error in Live Control Room.
  • Make one change at a time, then use a test stream and preview to confirm the result.

If audio is healthy in the encoder but not in the YouTube stream

Check stream health and the outbound internet connection. A healthy encoder output does not rule out a problem transmitting the stream. If the connection test shows upload trouble, ask your internet service provider to investigate.

If only one viewer has the problem

Compare the stream on a different device or internet connection. If other viewers can hear it, continue investigating that viewer’s playback rather than changing the radio source or encoder settings without evidence.

Prevent silence on the next broadcast

  • Test with representative program audio before going live.
  • Check the Live Control Room preview before starting the broadcast.
  • Monitor audio and stream health while the broadcast is running, and note when any error appears.
  • Keep a local recording if your encoder supports one; it can help show whether audio was present before the stream reached YouTube.

Do not buy hardware until you isolate a hardware fault

A silent YouTube playback alone does not show that a microphone, mixer, cable, or audio interface has failed. The audio may be missing in the source, routing, encoder settings, stream transmission, or one viewer’s playback. Consider replacing a component only after the checks identify that component as absent or faulty.
