A lower RPM on a 24/7 YouTube livestream does not automatically mean advertisers are paying less. RPM combines several revenue sources and divides them by views, including views that did not show an ad. A larger share of unmonetized views can therefore pull RPM down even if advertiser rates have not changed.
What RPM measures—and what it does not
YouTube defines RPM as creator revenue after YouTube’s revenue share per 1,000 views. It can include advertising, YouTube Premium, memberships, Super Chat, and Super Stickers. Because its denominator is views rather than ad impressions, RPM is not a direct measure of what advertisers paid for your livestream.
Three related figures help separate the causes:
- CPM is advertiser cost per 1,000 ad impressions, before YouTube’s revenue share.
- Playback-based CPM is advertiser cost per 1,000 video playbacks that included at least one ad.
- Estimated monetized playbacks counts times a video was watched with ads. It is different from total views and from ad impressions.

Why a livestream’s RPM can be lower
More views may be going unmonetized
A view does not guarantee an ad. If views grow faster than estimated monetized playbacks, RPM can fall even when revenue per ad impression is broadly stable. Ad availability can depend on settings, ad inventory, viewer targeting and geography, whether the viewer has YouTube Premium, recent ad exposure, and whether the content is suitable for advertisers.

The live audience may have a different geography or ad mix
Advertiser competition varies by geography, and advertisers can target particular audiences, devices, demographics, or interests. If a livestream attracts viewers in different countries or audience segments from your regular videos, its CPM and playback-based CPM may differ. Seasonality and the mix of available ad formats can also move those rates.
Live ad settings and delivery affect opportunities
When live monetization is enabled, YouTube turns on pre-roll and display ads, but an ad slot is not a promise that an ad will serve: YouTube’s guidance states, “Ad slots are not guaranteed to serve ads.” Mid-roll behavior depends on the selected mode. In manual mode, no mid-roll ads run unless you insert them. Check the current options and details in YouTube’s live-stream monetization help.

YouTube recommends automatic live mid-rolls. It reported an average uplift of over 20% in in-stream ad revenue per hour among creators who enabled automatic live mid-rolls compared with those who did not, averaged across 207 countries in January 2024. That is a platform-reported comparison—not a guaranteed result, and not a promise of a particular RPM increase for an individual channel.
Live and replay revenue can be mixed up
Revenue from the live broadcast and revenue from its replay are not necessarily the same. In Analytics, use the Live filter to break down live and replay ad revenue, then compare like with like rather than treating the combined result as the livestream’s live-session RPM.

RPM also includes non-ad revenue
Memberships, YouTube Premium, Super Chat, and Super Stickers can contribute to RPM. If those sources differ between livestreams and regular videos, the total RPM can change without an equivalent change in ad performance. Look at the revenue-source breakdown before attributing the difference to ads.
How to find the cause in YouTube Analytics
- Match the comparison. Select equivalent date ranges and compare the livestream with regular videos over the same period. Separate live revenue from replay revenue with the Live filter.
- Compare monetized activity with views. Review views, estimated monetized playbacks, and ad impressions. If views rise while monetized playbacks do not keep pace, the monetized share of viewing is a likely contributor to lower RPM.
- Check ad pricing and audience mix. Compare CPM and playback-based CPM, then inspect audience geography and the mix of ad formats. A changed audience or season can affect advertiser rates independently of your live settings.
- Audit live ad delivery. Confirm monetization is enabled. Check whether mid-rolls are automatic, scheduled, or manual; if manual, verify that breaks were actually inserted. Keep in mind that available slots may not fill.
- Check where the stream is watched. YouTube says live ads are turned off for external embeds using autoplay. If a meaningful portion of viewing comes from such embeds, that delivery context may help explain fewer ad opportunities.
- Verify eligibility and monetization modules. Content that does not meet advertiser-friendly guidelines may receive limited or no ads; review YouTube’s channel monetization policies. Watch Page ads and Premium revenue on live or long-form content require acceptance of the Watch Page Monetization Module. Fan funding requires the Commerce Product Module and activation of the individual feature; see YouTube’s monetization options and modules.
- Inspect revenue sources. Check whether ads, Premium, memberships, Super Chat, or Super Stickers account for the change. RPM alone cannot identify which source moved.
Does streaming for 24 hours itself reduce RPM?
The YouTube documentation covered here does not identify 24/7 duration itself as an independent cause of lower RPM. Duration may coincide with different audiences, viewing contexts, ad settings, or monetized-view shares, so compare your own Analytics rather than assuming a duration penalty. The useful question is which component changed: monetized playbacks, ad pricing, ad delivery, or non-ad revenue.

Keeping the stream online is a separate issue from RPM
