If a beat lands before or after its matching visual movement, the problem is audio-to-visual timing—not simply YouTube’s live-stream latency. Compare the stream software’s output, a local recording, and YouTube playback to find where the mismatch first appears. Then adjust only the source or timing setting responsible; there is no universal offset that fixes every visualizer setup.
First distinguish a late stream from audio and visualizer being out of sync
YouTube defines stream latency as “the delay between your camera capturing an event and the event being displayed to viewers.” That is the time it takes an event to reach the viewer, not a measure of whether the sound and visualizer line up with each other. YouTube’s latency guidance explains that lower latency reduces the player’s read-ahead buffer and can increase buffering; network congestion and other factors can also delay playback.
- Everything arrives late, but the beat matches the visual: this is a viewer-latency concern.
- The audio beat happens before or after the corresponding visual movement: this is a relative synchronization problem. Investigate the visualizer, audio routing, and stream path.
The latency choices documented by YouTube are Normal for non-interactive streams, Low for limited audience interaction, and Ultra-low for real-time interaction. YouTube says most viewers on Low latency experience latency under 10 seconds and most on Ultra-low latency under five seconds. Those are viewer-delay descriptions, not acceptable audio-to-visual alignment tolerances. The page also says Low and Ultra-low latency do not support 4K. Check YouTube’s current guidance before changing the setting, since its interface and recommendations can change.

Find the first point where the mismatch appears
Use one repeatable, easy-to-spot event: a sharp beat, a clap, or a distinct visual pulse. Compare the same moment at each checkpoint and note whether the sound or visual happens first. Also note whether the offset stays about the same or grows as the stream continues.

- Check the streaming software’s program output. Look at the actual output being sent to YouTube, not just an individual source preview. If sound and motion already diverge here, investigate the production setup first.
- Make and play a short local recording. Record the program output and compare the same event. A recording can reveal a mismatch that is easy to miss while watching the live preview.
- Compare YouTube playback. Check the public stream against the same event in the local recording. A mismatch that first appears downstream points to the stream path or configuration, rather than proving that the visualizer itself is wrong.
- Write down direction and progression. Record whether audio is early or late and whether the gap is fixed or grows over time. These observations narrow the investigation; they do not identify a universal correction by themselves.
An OBS forum user reported that microphone and camera appeared synchronized in the OBS program window but not in YouTube playback. That is an example from one setup, not evidence of a general OBS or YouTube defect. The discussion recommends checking a recording and confirming that the source selected for adjustment is actually the one that needs it.
Use the pattern to choose what to inspect
| What you observe | Where to investigate first |
|---|---|
| The program output and local recording are both out of sync | Check the visualizer and audio source routing and timing in the production setup. Confirm which source produces the sound and which source drives the visual movement. |
| The program output and local recording align, but YouTube playback does not | Inspect YouTube stream health and the outgoing stream configuration before changing a local source offset. |
| The gap stays roughly constant | Look for a stable timing difference in the relevant source or signal path. Change only the identified source or timing parameter, then repeat the same comparison. |
| The gap grows over time | Investigate the path that may be allowing timing to diverge over time. The documented sources do not establish a universal setting or correction for this pattern. |
| A sound or visual source is absent, not merely mistimed | Check that the relevant source is running and connected before troubleshooting synchronization. |
Do not apply an arbitrary number of milliseconds or change a particular OBS control just because audio is early or late. The right control depends on the visualizer type and signal path; the exact setup is not specified here.

Check OBS inputs and YouTube stream health
Confirm the audio source reaches OBS
OBS’s Audio Mixer Technical Details explains what its meters represent. A missing input indication can mean no audio is reaching OBS—for example, playback has not started or an audio interface has disconnected. That points to an absent input, not necessarily a sync error. Make sure the intended audio is reaching the production software before adjusting timing.
Read YouTube’s configuration warnings
YouTube’s live-stream health information can surface configuration problems, but a warning is not proof that it caused the visualizer mismatch. The Live Streaming API configuration-issues reference describes health-status issues and their remediation. Its documented checks include unsupported audio codecs, sample rates outside YouTube’s recommendations, and mismatches in sample rate or audio bitrate between primary and backup streams. It recommends AAC or MP3 audio and 44.1 kHz or 48 kHz sample rates.

The same reference describes videoIngestionStarved as: “YouTube is not receiving enough video to maintain smooth streaming.” Treat this as a video-ingestion warning, not a diagnosis of every audio-to-visualizer timing problem.
Change one thing, then repeat the comparison
- Use the checkpoint results to identify whether the mismatch is already in the program output or appears only in YouTube playback.
- Verify source routing and that the correct source or signal is selected before changing a timing setting.
- Change only the setting tied to the identified source or stream-path issue.
- Repeat the same event comparison in the program output, a new local recording, and YouTube playback. Keep the test event and observation method consistent.
This avoids masking one problem with a second adjustment. An OBS GitHub issue opened in 2021 described a sync-offset problem in OBS 27.1.1 on Windows 10, where the reporter said the offset appeared to apply only after touching the UI control. It is a version-specific historical report, not evidence of a general current OBS behavior or of the cause in a visualizer setup.

Common troubleshooting mistakes
- Changing YouTube latency to fix relative sync: latency governs viewer delay and buffering trade-offs; it does not, by itself, explain why the visualizer and audio differ.
- Adjusting a source based only on the preview: a preview can look aligned while downstream playback differs. Verify with a local recording and the YouTube stream.
- Treating a health warning as a sync diagnosis: use warnings to identify configuration issues, but confirm timing at each checkpoint.
- Changing several settings at once: if the result changes, you will not know which adjustment mattered. Test one identified change at a time.
- Assuming a universal offset: without knowing the visualizer and signal path, a fixed millisecond value or named control may make the mismatch worse.
Or let it run in the cloud
