There is no single cause you can identify from the symptom alone. First check whether YouTube shows a copyright warning or audio error, whether sound is missing in your encoder or recording, or whether only the live player is silent. Those clues separate rights enforcement from an audio-ingest, connection, or playback problem. The YouTube guidance cited here does not establish a special India-only cause.

Start with the symptom and YouTube’s stream-health message

Open YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room and check the stream-health indicator and the time of any message. YouTube’s Live Dashboard and Live Control Room assess the stream being sent to YouTube; the message and its timestamp can help you match a problem to a change in your encoder or audio source. A copyright notice points to a different path from a “no audio” or other ingest error. YouTube’s live-stream error guidance describes these messages.

  • Copyright warning, placeholder image, or interruption: investigate the music rights and Content ID branch below.
  • “No audio” or an audio-setting error: check that your encoder sends one supported audio stream with valid settings.
  • Encoder and local recording sound normal, but the live player does not: check stream health and your outbound connection, then compare playback on other devices and networks.

Check whether YouTube is enforcing music rights

YouTube scans live streams for third-party content. A match may prompt a warning and placeholder image; if the content continues, YouTube may temporarily interrupt or terminate the stream. A license does not necessarily prevent this: YouTube says a stream can still be interrupted if the rights holder has not added the channel to its Content ID allowlist, including when the owner has restricted the music to territories where the streamer says they have rights. See YouTube’s guidance on copyright issues with live streams.

  1. Read the Live Control Room notice and any related copyright details. Note whether it identifies the music and whether the stream is interrupted or restricted.
  2. Confirm that your permission covers live streaming, the relevant territories, and the way you use the track. A license for some uses may not cover a live stream.
  3. If the rights holder uses Content ID, ask whether they can add your channel to its allowlist for the live use. Do not assume that a license document alone will stop a live match.
  4. If the silence affects only viewers in India, check whether the claim includes a country or territory restriction. YouTube documents that claimed music can have geographic restrictions; that is distinct from a general India-specific audio rule. See YouTube’s restrictions on claimed music.

Check music choices and permissions before the next class

YouTube says music and sound effects from its Audio Library are copyright-safe for use on YouTube. Find the library in YouTube Studio; if a track carries a Creative Commons license, include the required attribution in the video description. YouTube says it knows only the music and sound effects in its own Audio Library to be copyright-safe. A third-party track labeled “free” or “royalty-free,” or a description saying it is free, is not a guarantee against a Content ID match. Original music is another option. For other licensed music, read the permitted uses and territories and ask the rights owner about allowlisting your channel for live streams. This is platform guidance, not legal advice. See YouTube’s Audio Library guidance and its livestream terms and conditions.

Check the encoder’s audio output

Look at the encoder’s audio meters while the stream is running, and listen to its output or a local recording made during a test. If sound is absent or distorted there too, check the audio source and routing into the encoder, encoder errors, and CPU load. YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance recommends checking these when the encoder output itself sounds wrong. If the encoder output and local recording sound good but the stream does not, investigate the outbound internet connection. YouTube’s live-stream troubleshooting steps cover these checks.

Confirm a single supported audio stream

For RTMP/RTMPS, YouTube lists AAC or MP3 audio codecs and supports one or two audio channels. Its guidance recommends 44.1 kHz for stereo and 128 Kbps for stereo audio. YouTube’s error guidance also says to provide one audio stream: sending none or sending multiple streams can cause ingestion problems. Check the encoder’s actual output rather than assuming its selected input or saved preset is what reaches YouTube. See YouTube’s encoder settings guidance and live-stream error messages.

Check upload capacity and run a monitored test

Your outbound connection needs to carry the stream’s total bitrate reliably. YouTube recommends about 20% upload-bandwidth headroom above that bitrate and warns that disruptions to connectivity can break a stream. Run a rehearsal with the same music, encoder settings, and network you plan to use for the class. Keep the encoder meters and Live Control Room stream health visible, and note when any error appears. See YouTube’s streaming tips.

Find out whether the silence is limited to the live player or a viewer

If your encoder and local recording are clear, check the live feed on another device and network. Ask whether the problem affects every viewer, only one playback device, or viewers in a particular location. YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance recommends checking the encoder and outbound connection when many viewers on different connections report trouble. If only one viewer is affected, check that device’s volume, browser, and sound settings before changing the encoder. If only viewers in India report silence, review the claimed track’s geographic restrictions rather than assuming Indian networks or law caused the issue.
