If typing appears late in Firefox, the cause could be an extension, theme, graphics acceleration, Firefox profile or preferences, a particular website’s editor, or platform-specific behavior. Start by testing the same text field in Firefox Troubleshoot Mode: whether the delay remains determines which checks to try next.
First, find out where the delay happens
Before changing settings, compare a few situations. Try a short text field and, if relevant, the large field where you first noticed the problem. Check another website, then another application. This helps distinguish a Firefox-wide issue from a site-specific editor or a broader system slowdown.
- One website only: Test another site’s plain text field. If that works normally, note the affected site and editor when reporting the issue; the available Mozilla guidance does not establish a universal fix for a particular website.
- Large fields only: Record that detail. A Linux support report describes lag in very large fields, but does not establish that field size causes the problem on other systems.
- Other applications also lag: Restart the computer and check whether the delay continues outside Firefox. Mozilla includes a computer restart among its general troubleshooting steps.
- Several Firefox sites are affected: Continue with Troubleshoot Mode to test browser components.
Mozilla’s general guidance is in Troubleshoot and diagnose Firefox problems (updated September 19, 2025).
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Use Troubleshoot Mode to narrow down the cause
Troubleshoot Mode temporarily disables extensions, switches to the default theme, and turns off hardware acceleration. Because it changes all three at once, a successful test narrows the cause but does not identify which change helped.

- Open the Firefox menu.
- Select Help, then Troubleshoot Mode.
- Choose to restart Firefox in Troubleshoot Mode.
- Re-test typing in the same website and field where you noticed the delay.
Mozilla’s diagnostic rule is direct: “If your problem persists in Troubleshoot Mode, it is not being caused by an extension, theme or hardware acceleration.” See Troubleshoot extensions, themes and hardware acceleration issues to solve common Firefox problems (updated June 12, 2026).
If typing is normal in Troubleshoot Mode
One or more of the temporarily changed components may be involved. Return to normal mode and test them separately so you can identify the change associated with the delay.

Check extensions
Disable extensions, then re-enable them one at a time, testing the same field after each change. If you have many extensions, test smaller groups first, then narrow down any group that brings the delay back. The goal is to identify a reproducible connection, not to assume that any particular extension is at fault.

- The tiny Logitech Unifying receiver stays in your laptop. There’s no need to unplug it when you move around, so there’s less worry of it being lost. And you can easily add compatible wireless mice and keyboards to the same wireless receiver.
Test hardware acceleration separately
- Open Settings and select General.
- Scroll to Performance.
- Turn off Use recommended performance settings if needed to expose the individual controls, then clear Use hardware acceleration when available.
- Restart Firefox and test typing in the same field.
If turning acceleration off changes the behavior, Mozilla suggests updating the computer’s graphics drivers or continuing without hardware acceleration. The relevant troubleshooting steps are in Mozilla’s guide to extensions, themes and hardware acceleration.
If typing still lags in Troubleshoot Mode
Mozilla’s test rules out extensions, the theme, and hardware acceleration as causes under that test. Next, check whether Firefox is under resource pressure or whether the problem is tied to profile settings or system context.

Look for high resource use
Open Firefox Task Manager at about:performance or about:processes. Check whether a tab or extension is consuming unusually high resources while the delay occurs. Close or reload a resource-heavy tab, then re-test. Mozilla’s general troubleshooting guidance also covers diagnosing Firefox problems: Troubleshoot and diagnose Firefox problems.

Test with a new profile if ordinary checks fail
Mozilla documents trying a new Firefox profile as a further diagnostic step. A new profile can help determine whether the issue is connected to the current profile’s settings or state. Treat it as a test, not as a reason to discard the existing profile: preserve access to needed data and understand Firefox’s profile options before making changes. See Mozilla’s troubleshooting and diagnosis guide.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Use platform-specific reports cautiously
Individual Mozilla Support forum reports describe changes that helped in particular circumstances, but neither is an official, general-purpose fix.
- Windows 11: In a November 2022 case, a volunteer suggested changing the
accessibility.force_disabledpreference to1; the user reported improvement after restarting. This is an anecdotal report, not a recommendation for all Windows users. Do not change the preference unless you understand how to restore its prior value. The case is documented in Firefox Lags When Typing. - Linux and large fields: In a March 2024 report, a user said enabling native Wayland with
MOZ_ENABLE_WAYLAND=1resolved lag in very large text fields. That result applies to the reporter’s environment; it does not establish Wayland as the cause or solution on other systems. See typing lag in large text input fields.
Before investigating a platform-specific change, note your operating system, Firefox version, how Firefox was installed, and whether the delay affects only large fields. Those details make it easier to judge whether a report resembles your situation.
