A Samsung Smart TV that glitches is almost always showing one of three symptoms: the picture freezes, flickers or distorts; an app crashes or runs slowly; or the TV drops its Wi-Fi connection. Each symptom points to a different cause, so the fastest fix depends on identifying which one you have and where it appears. Start by checking whether the problem happens on every input and app, or only on one.
Start by defining the glitch
“Glitching” covers several distinct problems, and Samsung’s support material treats them separately. Before changing any settings, answer these four questions:
- What does the glitch look like? Picture freezing, flickering, or distortion is a display problem. A stuck or failing app is a software problem. Buffering or lost connections point to the network.
- Does it happen on every source? Test the built-in apps, the broadcast (antenna or cable tuner) channels, and each HDMI input. If only one HDMI input misbehaves, the cause is more likely the cable or the connected device.
- Does the Picture Test show it? The Picture Test generates an image on the TV alone, so it separates a TV fault from an outside one.
- Do other devices on the same network or antenna have the same trouble? If they do, the problem lies upstream of the TV.

Picture freezing, flicker, or distortion
This is the most common reason people search this topic, and it has the most possible causes. Work through the TV-side checks first, because they are free and quick.
Update the TV’s firmware
Samsung US recommends updating the firmware when the picture freezes. The update can take a few minutes, and the TV may reset some video and audio settings afterward, so check your picture mode and sound settings once it finishes. You can update over the internet from the TV’s Support menu, or install a USB update file downloaded for your exact model. If freezing continues after the update, contact Samsung Support.

Run the Picture Test
The Picture Test checks whether the TV’s panel is producing a clean image without any input from an external device. The menu path depends on the model year. Samsung lists Device Care for 2022 and newer models and Support > Self Diagnosis for older models. Follow the on-screen instructions, then judge the result:
- If the test image flickers, Samsung’s picture troubleshooting guidance states: “If the picture is flickering in the picture test, visit the Support Center to request service.” This is the strongest sign the fault is inside the TV.
- If the test image looks normal, the problem is coming from a cable, a connected device, or the source, so move to the input checks below.
Isolate the HDMI input, cable, or device
If the glitch appears only on one HDMI input, test a different source and a different cable. Samsung India also suggests a simple elimination test: temporarily remove the set-top box and HDMI cable. If the flicker stops, the cable or the external device or service provider is the likely cause. If the flicker continues with nothing connected to that input, the TV may need repair.

Samsung US describes an HDMI cable test. On older menu layouts it is found at Support > Self Diagnosis > Signal Information > HDMI Cable Test. If the test reports a fault, replace the cable. A cable compatible with your TV and source device is the only purchase this step might call for, and you only need one if the test identifies a faulty cable. Compatibility depends on both devices, so check the specifications of your TV and source before buying.

- Disconnect and reconnect the antenna lead at both the TV and the wall or antenna socket.
- Open the signal information screen for the channel and check the reading.
- If reception stays poor, contact your broadcaster for a signal check where that service is offered.
Samsung India’s flicker guidance, updated 6 August 2025, lists example signal values that indicate weak reception. Those figures are not universal. The signal information feature is not available in every region, so use the readings only as a relative guide on your own TV, and rely on your broadcaster for a definitive assessment.
App crashes and slow apps
If only one app misbehaves, the problem is usually software rather than the screen. Samsung India’s app troubleshooting guidance, dated 27 March 2026, recommends a soft reset first:

- Press and hold the Power button on the remote until the TV restarts.
- If the remote does not respond, unplug the TV from the wall for 30 seconds, then plug it back in.
- Go to the TV’s software update option and install any available update.
- Open the app again and test it.
If the app still fails, the problem may be with the app provider’s servers or with that app’s version on your TV, so check the app’s own support page.

- Run Network Status from the TV’s network settings to see whether the TV has a working connection.
- Reset the TV’s network settings, then reconnect to your Wi-Fi network.
- Power-cycle the router and modem. Unplug both, wait briefly, and plug them back in.
- Test other devices such as phones or laptops on the same network. If they also struggle, the issue is your home network or your internet service, and you should contact your internet provider.
- If other devices work but the TV does not, the fault is more likely in the TV, and you should contact Samsung Support.
When to contact Samsung
Escalate to Samsung Support when the evidence points to the TV itself: the Picture Test shows flicker, freezing continues after a firmware update, or the TV alone fails to connect while other devices work. Have your model code ready, which is printed on the back of the TV and on the packaging. Samsung’s guidance varies by model year, software version, and region, so if a menu path in this article does not match your screen, use your model’s manual or support page.
Do not open the TV or attempt internal electrical repairs. Those steps belong to an authorized service technician.
What the official sources do not establish
Samsung’s support material does not publish how often these problems occur, so there is no reliable failure rate to compare against. The guidance on this page comes from Samsung’s own troubleshooting pages, not from an independent diagnosis of your specific set. Treat the steps as a process of elimination rather than a guaranteed fix.
