If your order says “on hold,” its processing or fulfillment has been paused while the retailer or service checks a detail or resolves an issue. The status alone does not tell you whether your payment was completed, whether the order will ship, or how long the pause will last. Start with the exact notice on your order page or in the retailer’s email; the label and next steps vary by company.
What does “order on hold” mean?
“On hold” generally describes a paused step in an order workflow, not a single standardized outcome. For Shopify merchants, for example, the Shopify Help Center uses the term for an order whose fulfillment is paused when an issue prevents the merchant from fulfilling it: Shopify’s order-hold documentation. Other retailers and platforms may use different labels or processes.
The status does not, by itself, confirm a failed payment, cancellation, completed charge, or shipping date. Payment and fulfillment can have separate statuses, so check each rather than treating “on hold” as a complete explanation.
Why might an order be on hold?
These are documented possibilities, not a diagnosis of your particular order. The hold notice or retailer support can identify which, if any, applies.
#1 Best Overall
Payment authorization or processing
A card authorization problem can pause an order. Some payment methods can also remain pending while the payment provider processes the transaction. Office Depot describes authorization issues in its order-status guidance; Shopify explains pending payments in its order-hold documentation.
Billing or shipping address checks
A billing address that does not match the payment issuer’s records may need correction. Address verification is also among the hold reasons IBM identifies in its order-hold documentation.

Verification or fraud review
A retailer may pause an order for verification. Shopify describes review indicators that can include address verification (AVS) and card security code (CVV) results, consistency between payment and customer locations, and unusual device or network activity. A review is not proof that an order is fraudulent. See Shopify’s explanation of order holds.

Other platform-specific workflows
Some holds arise from a platform’s particular workflow, such as marketplace authorization or another system check. Shopify documents such cases, but those rules should not be assumed to apply to orders placed elsewhere. Consult the notice for your own order and the platform’s current help page.
How to get an order off hold
- Read the order page and hold notice. Sign in through the retailer’s official website or app, then review the status and any email or notification about the order. Look for a stated reason, requested information, or a link to an official action.
- Check the addresses. Compare the billing address with the information your payment provider has on file, and confirm that the delivery details are correct. If something is wrong, update it through the retailer’s official account or order flow.
- Check the payment status. Find out whether the transaction is pending, authorized, declined, or captured. If the notice points to an issuer or provider authorization issue, ask the provider whether it declined the transaction. A payment status and an order-fulfillment status are not necessarily the same.
- Complete any requested verification through an official channel. Use the retailer’s account page or verified support contact named on its site. Do not treat a review as evidence that you did something wrong.
- Ask about stock options if an item is unavailable. Contact the retailer for its current estimate and ask whether you can wait or choose an available alternative, if one is offered.
- Contact the retailer if the notice is unclear. Provide your order number and ask what action is required, whether the hold affects payment, and whether it changes the estimated delivery. Support channels and procedures differ by retailer.
Do not repeatedly retry payment or place a duplicate order before checking the retailer’s instructions. The available retailer guidance does not establish either as a safe general fix.

Will my order still ship, and how long can a hold last?
A hold does not settle whether the order will ship. The retailer may resume processing after a check or correction, but the notice or customer support is the reliable place to learn what applies to your order and whether an estimate has changed.

There is no universal release time. Shopify says certain marketplace-authorization and Managed Markets authorization holds can last from 5 minutes to 24 hours. Separately, Amazon Seller Central says its seller-facing “Pending verification” status can, in some cases, extend processing for as long as 21 days. These are platform-specific examples, not a promised timeline for shoppers or for other kinds of holds: Shopify and Amazon Seller Central.

Have I been charged?
A transaction shown by your bank as an authorization or pending amount is not necessarily a completed charge. Target says a canceled item can leave a temporary authorization until the bank releases it. Samsung’s US order help similarly says an amount shown after cancellation is likely a pending authorization and gives guidance specific to its orders. Check whether your transaction is pending or posted, then contact the retailer or card issuer about the individual payment: Target’s authorization-hold guidance and Samsung US order help.
What to ask customer support
If the notice does not give you a clear next step, these questions can help distinguish an order delay from a payment issue:
Quick Recap
- What is the specific reason this order is on hold?
- Is there an action or information you need from me, and where should I provide it?
- Is the payment pending, authorized, declined, or captured?
- Does the hold affect the estimated delivery date, and what timing can you currently confirm?
- If the item is unavailable, what options are available for this order?
Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
