When Chrome opens with Sync marked “Paused” and asks you to sign in again, it has stopped syncing your browser data until you verify your identity. Google’s help pages list signing out of a Google service, such as Gmail, as one reason Chrome pauses Sync, and the standard fix is to respond to Chrome’s sign-in prompt. If the pause returns every time you close or restart Chrome, the next setting to check is on-device site data.

What the “Paused” wording refers to

In this scenario, “Paused” refers to Chrome Sync, the feature that keeps your bookmarks, passwords, history and open tabs in step across devices. It is not a complete diagnosis of your Google Account. Reports on Google’s support community use phrases such as “sync is paused” and “Chrome is always Paused” to describe the same symptom, but those are reader descriptions rather than proof that every case has the same cause.

Signing in and Sync are separate settings

Google distinguishes between being signed into Chrome and having Sync turned on. Signing in is enough to save some data to your Google Account, but tabs and browsing history only sync when Sync is switched on in Chrome’s settings. The table below shows the split.

Chrome data What it needs to sync
Bookmarks, passwords and other Chrome data Signed into Chrome with your Google Account
Tabs and browsing history Sync turned on in Chrome’s settings

You can sign into Google web services while using Incognito, but you cannot sign into Chrome from an Incognito window. Google’s explanation of how sign-in works is at How sign-in with your Google Account works in Chrome.

How to resume a paused Sync

  1. Open Chrome and find the verification prompt. Select the prompt that asks you to verify or sign in again. Its wording can change between Chrome versions.
  2. Sign into your Google Account. Google says this resumes Sync when it paused after you signed out of a Google service. Google’s current guidance on this is in Fix issues with sync in Chrome.

If the prompt does not appear, or Sync pauses again later, move to the setting below rather than repeating the sign-in.

If Sync pauses again after you close or restart Chrome

When the pause recurs after each restart, Google’s current help points to the on-device site data setting. This controls whether websites may save data on the device. To check it:

  1. Open Chrome and select Settings.
  2. Go to Privacy and security → Site Settings → Additional content settings → On-device site data.
  3. Turn on Allow sites to save data on your device.
  4. Restart Chrome and check whether Sync stays active.

Menu labels can move between Chrome releases, so if the names differ on your screen, look for the same option under the site settings area.

When neither step resolves the pause

Google’s help pages do not establish a single cause beyond the sign-in and on-device data checks above. Before drawing further conclusions, answer these questions:

  • Does the pause appear only after you restart Chrome, or right after you sign out of a Google service?
  • Are you still signed into Chrome itself, or only into Google web pages?
  • Is the computer or Chrome profile managed by a work or school administrator? If so, some settings may be controlled by that administrator rather than by you.

Some community replies blame profile corruption, antivirus software, extensions or cookie exceptions. These are user hypotheses in discussions, not causes confirmed by Google’s official help, so treat them as things to test only after the steps above. Two example threads are Sync/sign in account paused every time i close browser/restart my pc and On my laptop Chrome is always Paused. Both show the symptom but do not give an authoritative diagnosis.
