An AVR project can run out of program storage (usually flash) or dynamic memory (SRAM), and the fixes differ. Start with both figures in the post-compile report: flash holds the compiled program and some stored data; SRAM holds global and static variables and must also accommodate the runtime stack and any heap allocations. A successful compile does not guarantee the sketch has enough SRAM while running.
First identify which memory limit you are hitting
In Arduino IDE or Cloud Editor, read both lines in the compile report: program storage and dynamic memory. Arduino CLI’s AVR size recipe calculates program storage from the .text, .data, and .bootloader sections, and dynamic memory from .data, .bss, and .noinit. The available limits come from the selected board’s platform configuration, so a percentage or example capacity is not a universal AVR specification. See Arduino’s explanation of the sketch-size and memory report and the Arduino CLI size-calculation recipe.
- Program storage is near or over its limit: the compiled program and related stored data need to fit in flash.
- Dynamic memory is high, or the sketch fails unpredictably at runtime: investigate SRAM, including globals, static data, stack, and heap.
- Compilation succeeds but uploading fails: treat this as a separate upload-path problem unless the compiler reported a size failure. A size report is not itself an upload error.
For a specific diagnosis, record the exact board or MCU and the complete post-compile report. Without those, it is not possible to determine the board’s actual remaining capacity.

Why a compiled sketch can still run out of SRAM
The dynamic-memory number in the compile report accounts for global and static data; it does not tell you the maximum stack and heap demand at every point in execution. SRAM must serve those runtime uses too. AVR-LibC describes the risk of heap and stack growing toward each other, leaving too little room or colliding, and explains how repeated allocation and release can fragment the heap. See AVR-LibC’s memory-areas and malloc documentation.

That is why a sketch can compile while appearing stable in one run and failing when a deeper call path, larger input, or additional allocation raises runtime demand. The compile-time percentage is useful, but it is not proof of runtime safety.
If program storage (flash) is the limit
Trim code and library use
Remove unused variables and code, avoid including large libraries you do not need, and reduce duplicated constant text where practical. Check what the selected libraries actually pull into the build: including a library unnecessarily can increase the program even if only a small part of its functionality was intended.

Consider direct programming only when the bootloader trade-off fits
Arduino lists uploading with a hardware programmer as an option to reclaim program space otherwise used by the bootloader. This is a flash-space measure, not an SRAM fix, and direct programming means the bootloader is not retained. Confirm that this workflow suits how you install and update the project before choosing it.
If SRAM is the limit or runtime behavior is unstable
Reduce long-lived data and oversized objects
- Review global and static arrays and objects; reduce their size or remove those the sketch does not need.
- Use a data type that can represent the required range rather than a wider type by default.
- Use local scope or pass values as parameters when that suits their lifetime, but check the effect on stack use. Moving data out of global scope does not automatically reduce total SRAM demand.
Watch strings and output buffers
Where practical, avoid repeated String operations and large concatenations. For serial output, several Serial.print() calls can avoid building a combined string. Arduino’s F() macro can keep constant serial-output text in flash on supported AVR cores, for example:

Serial.println(F("Ready"));
This is for fixed text, not a general way to move changing data out of SRAM. Arduino’s practical recommendations are in Reduce the size and memory usage of your sketch.
Check stack-heavy code and heap allocation
Large local arrays and objects consume stack space while their functions run. Deep call chains and recursion can increase stack demand; avoid recursion where a simpler iterative approach works. Repeated dynamic allocation can also make available heap space fragmented. Keep allocations bounded and predictable where possible, and test code paths that use the most local data or allocations.

Moving fixed data to flash requires the right access method
AVR flash and data memory are not always interchangeable address spaces. On applicable AVR targets, AVR-LibC’s PROGMEM places an object in program space, but ordinary data-space reads may not retrieve it correctly. Read it with the appropriate pgm_read_* function for its type and target. For example, a byte table can be declared and read like this:
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →#include <avr/pgmspace.h>
const uint8_t lookup[] PROGMEM = { 3, 7, 11 };
uint8_t value = pgm_read_byte(&lookup[1]);
Use the documented interface for the MCU and core you actually compile for; do not assume newer AVR compiler features such as __flash are supported on every target. AVR-LibC explains the separate spaces and retrieval methods in Data in Program Space. Compile and test the real project after changing data placement.

When a programmer, SD card, or different board helps
| Option | Can help with | Does not solve |
|---|---|---|
| Hardware AVR ISP programmer | Potentially reclaiming flash used by a bootloader when programming directly | Low SRAM or insufficient runtime stack/heap space |
| SD card and interface | Persistent files, logs, or other data that can be stored and read as needed | SRAM needed for ordinary variables, stack, and heap |
| Compatible board with more memory | A project whose required flash or SRAM working set cannot fit on the current board | Compatibility work; the appropriate replacement depends on the project and MCU |
An SD card is file storage, not extra working memory for normal variables. If the project still does not fit after sensible reductions, choose a replacement by the constrained resource: compare its flash and SRAM separately, then check peripheral and library compatibility, voltage, form factor, and migration effort. Without the current MCU and project requirements, a specific board recommendation would be premature.
Quick Recap
A practical diagnostic sequence
- Capture the evidence: note the selected board or MCU and copy the complete post-compile size report.
- Separate the symptom: determine whether compilation failed for size, upload failed after compilation, or the sketch compiles but misbehaves at runtime.
- Follow the constrained resource: for a flash problem, inspect code and library use; for an SRAM problem, inspect globals, arrays, strings, local data, recursion, and heap allocation patterns.
- Use flash deliberately: move only suitable fixed data, use the correct access functions for the target, and test the compiled project.
- Reassess the margin: account for runtime stack and heap demand rather than treating the global-memory figure as the full SRAM budget.
- Change hardware if needed: if the required working set still cannot fit, select a compatible board with more of the memory type that is actually constrained.
