An Apple Watch face that looks upside down is usually a mismatch between the orientation the watch is set to and the wrist and Digital Crown position you are actually using. Changing Watch Orientation to match your setup normally corrects it, and no accessory or repair is needed for this step.
What causes the upside-down display
Apple Watch lets you choose which wrist you wear it on and which side the Digital Crown sits on. Apple’s orientation guide describes these settings as controlling two things: whether raising your wrist wakes the watch, and which direction items move when you turn the Digital Crown. When the saved orientation does not match how the watch is worn, the display can appear rotated or inverted, and the watch may also behave unexpectedly when you raise your wrist.
Apple’s support pages reviewed for this article do not describe a hardware cause for an inverted display. If the orientation settings already match your setup, see the final section below.

You can make the change on the watch or in the iPhone Watch app. Both lead to the same setting.

On the Apple Watch
- Confirm which wrist you are wearing the watch on and which side the Digital Crown is on.
- Open Settings on the watch.
- Tap General, then tap Orientation.
- Set the wrist and Digital Crown position to match how you are wearing the watch.
On iPhone
- Open the Watch app on the paired iPhone.
- Tap My Watch, then tap General.
- Tap Watch Orientation.
- Choose the wrist and Digital Crown position that match your setup.
Apple’s orientation guide puts the goal this way: “If you want to move your Apple Watch to your other wrist or prefer the Digital Crown on the other side, adjust your orientation settings so that raising your wrist wakes your Apple Watch, and turning the Digital Crown moves things in the direction you expect.” (Apple Support, Change the language and orientation on Apple Watch, https://support.apple.com/en-ie/guide/watch/-apd0bf18f46b/watchos.)
If the watch does not wake when you raise your wrist
A wake problem can appear alongside the orientation problem, and the two are related because both depend on the wrist setting. Apple’s wake guide says that if the watch does not wake when you raise your wrist, you should make sure the proper wrist and watch orientation are selected (Apple Support, Turn on and wake Apple Watch, https://support.apple.com/en-lb/guide/watch/-apd748b87e2a/watchos).

- Correct the wrist and orientation setting as described above.
- Check Wake on Wrist Raise. On the watch, open Settings > Display & Brightness > Wake on Wrist Raise and confirm it is turned on.
- Raise your wrist again and check whether the display wakes and shows the correct orientation.

If the wrist, Digital Crown position, and wake setting are all correct and the display still looks inverted, the Apple guides cited here do not establish another cause, and they do not give a hardware diagnosis. Check the watch’s software version and contact Apple Support for help specific to your model and watchOS version. Apple’s buttons and gestures guide is a useful reference while you test the Digital Crown and screen behavior (https://support.apple.com/en-euro/105063).

Whatever the cause, start with the orientation setting. It is the documented first check, and it takes less than a minute.
