A large Indian audience does not translate into a guaranteed YouTube RPM. RPM is creator revenue per 1,000 views after YouTube’s share, and it includes views that generated no ad at all. Geography can affect advertiser demand, but your own Analytics data is needed to tell whether the main issue is audience mix, ad delivery, monetization settings, or something else.
What a low RPM does—and does not—tell you
YouTube defines RPM as revenue per 1,000 views after YouTube’s revenue share. It can include ads, YouTube Premium, memberships, Super Chat, and Super Stickers, while its denominator includes views that did not earn revenue. That means a stream can have substantial viewership and still show a low RPM if relatively few views monetize or other revenue sources are small. YouTube’s explanation of revenue analytics also distinguishes RPM from CPM.
CPM is an advertiser-side measure associated with ad costs and monetized ad activity; it is not your take-home revenue per 1,000 total views. A comparatively healthy CPM alongside low RPM can point to a gap between total views and monetized playbacks, rather than proving that advertisers pay little for every ad shown.
How Indian viewership can affect earnings
Advertisers can target geographies, and competition for ads differs by location. If a larger share of your audience comes from a market with less advertiser competition, CPM may shift. That makes geography a plausible factor when many viewers are in India—but it does not establish that India is the cause of a particular channel’s RPM. Topic, ad format, season, Premium viewing, and the fraction of views that receive ads can also affect the result.

YouTube’s official material does not provide a guaranteed current India-specific RPM or CPM rate for 24/7 livestreams. Treat online “India RPM” tables as estimates unless their methodology, date, format, and audience are clear; they are not a universal benchmark for your channel.
Google India reported that Google and YouTube were present in 93% of Indian consumer journeys for discovering a new brand, product, or retailer in a company blog post dated July 9, 2026. Why a 24/7 stream may have many views but few paid ads
Not every view receives an ad
A view may be unmonetized because monetization is off, no suitable ad is available, targeting does not match, the content is unsuitable for an advertiser, the viewer has YouTube Premium, or another delivery factor applies. A continuously available stream does not make every viewer or every playback an ad impression.

YouTube says monetized live streams can use pre-roll and display ads, with mid-roll ads set automatically or inserted manually. Its ad systems decide whether slots receive ads: “Ad slots are not guaranteed to serve ads.” YouTube Help: Monetize your live stream.

YouTube reports that, across a comparison covering 207 countries and averaged in January 2024, channels using automatic live mid-rolls had an average instream revenue-per-hour uplift compared with channels that did not. The cited page passage does not state the size of that uplift; it is not an India-specific result, a promised increase, or a result measured as RPM. Automatic mid-rolls are an option to test, not a guarantee of higher earnings.
Live and replay earnings can differ
When you review a continuous broadcast, separate revenue from the live stream and its replay. A single total can obscure whether viewers are watching live, returning to the archive, or contributing revenue through a source other than ads. YouTube Analytics provides a Live filter and revenue-source reporting for this investigation.
Diagnose the cause in YouTube Studio
- Check monetization eligibility and terms. In YouTube Studio, open Earn and confirm that the channel is eligible and has accepted the Watch Page Monetization Module. YouTube says ad and Premium revenue from long-form or live content watched on the Watch Page or through the YouTube player requires this module. Then check that monetization is enabled for the stream. YouTube monetization modules.
- Compare total views with monetized activity. In Analytics, look at estimated monetized playbacks and ad impressions alongside views for the same date range. A wide gap indicates that many views did not become monetized playbacks or ad impressions; it does not, by itself, identify why. Review the stream’s monetization state and ad delivery conditions.
- Compare RPM with CPM measures carefully. Use CPM and playback-based CPM as advertiser-side context, not as substitutes for creator RPM. Check whether RPM moved because the revenue per monetized playback changed or because the share of views that monetized changed.
- Break results down by geography and time. In Analytics, compare geography, date range, and revenue metrics. Look for a change in audience mix that coincides with the RPM change, while accounting for seasonality and changes in content or ad format. Compare like-for-like periods where possible.
- Inspect revenue sources and the live/replay split. In the Revenue tab, use the Live filter and examine revenue sources rather than assuming all revenue is advertising. Compare live-stream earnings with replay earnings where the reports make that distinction.
- Check where viewers watch. YouTube notes that ads are turned off for live streams embedded on external sites with autoplay. If a significant portion of viewing comes from such embeds, this may affect ad delivery. YouTube’s live monetization guidance.
For developers or analysts combining reports, YouTube Analytics API documentation distinguishes estimated revenue metrics from livestream viewership metrics. Use the available Studio reports first unless you need a programmatic analysis.
Review content originality and advertiser suitability
Continuous broadcasting is not, by itself, proof of a monetization-policy violation. The content and the channel as a whole still need to meet YouTube’s monetization policies and advertiser-friendly requirements. YouTube’s July 15, 2025 clarification renamed its former “repetitious content” policy “inauthentic content” and describes repetitive or mass-produced material as potentially ineligible. If RPM drops sharply, do not infer a policy penalty from the metric alone. Check Studio for limited-ad decisions, monetization notices, or channel-level review information, and assess whether the stream offers original, meaningful value rather than simply repeating material.

- Ads: Confirm monetization is on and consider automatic mid-rolls. Delivery depends on YouTube’s ad system and viewer experience; a setting does not guarantee an ad in each slot.
- Fan funding: If eligible and available to your channel, memberships, Super Chat, and Super Stickers can add revenue sources beyond ads. Check availability and controls in Studio. YouTube’s earning options.
- Ad insertion controls: YouTube names the Elgato Stream Deck plugin as an optional way to insert live ads. It is an operational control, not a way to increase advertiser demand or guarantee higher RPM.
Choose changes based on what the reports show. If the gap is between views and monetized playbacks, investigate delivery and viewing context; if the geography mix shifted, compare matched periods; if ad RPM is not the only income source, review the other revenue lines. Avoid changing several things at once if you want to understand which change affected the result.
