The pink ball is used in day-night cricket to help players and spectators follow the game as daylight fades and play continues under floodlights. The red ball is the traditional Test ball; the main difference established here is the visibility problem each colour is meant to address—not a universal difference in how every ball behaves.
Why use a pink ball for day-night cricket?
A day-night match moves from daylight into evening, when the ball must remain visible against changing light and under floodlights. Pink is intended to provide that visibility. Traditional Test cricket uses white clothing, so a white ball would not provide a practical contrast; the Pakistan Cricket Board’s historical explanation of floodlit Tests describes this constraint and the need for a ball suitable for play under lights. How does a pink ball differ from a red ball?
| Ball | Role supported by the sources | What the comparison establishes |
|---|---|---|
| Pink | Selected for day-night play as daylight gives way to evening and floodlights. | A visibility choice for those conditions; not proof of one standard set of playing characteristics. |
| Red | The traditional Test ball. | The established traditional option, rather than the day-night visibility choice described above. |
Player and trial reports have discussed how pink balls can play, but those observations do not establish a universal technical difference. The sources here do not support a blanket claim that pink balls always swing more, last longer, retain shine differently, or have a particular seam, weight, or core compared with red balls. Such details need to be checked for a specific manufacturer, model, and match context. Historical reports include BCCI’s 2016 account featuring Parthiv Patel and Cricket Australia’s report on day-night Test plans.

Are pink balls all the same?
Do not assume that every pink ball has identical specifications or behaves identically. The ICC’s Test ball clause says that for day-night Tests, the brand, type, and colour are subject to prior approval by the visiting Board. That provision makes the chosen match ball a matter of approval, not a single universal pink-ball specification. ICC Men’s Test Match Clause 4: The Ball

Can a pink ball be used in a daytime Test?
Yes. In an announcement published 1 October 2026, the ICC said pink balls may be used in daytime Tests as a trial, by mutual agreement, to reduce lost play due to bad light. Teams must agree before the Test, and the choice applies for the match: they cannot switch from red to pink after play begins. ICC: Key changes across formats with new ICC Playing Conditions
