Crackling, popping, static, or muffled sound from an iPhone is a symptom, not proof that a speaker has failed. The cause may be as simple as a blocked opening or a setting; crackling limited to calls can also involve network reception, and a recently wet phone may sound muffled while water evaporates. Check the safe, external causes first. If distortion persists, Apple says the iPhone may need service.
What iPhone speaker crackling can—and cannot—tell you
The sound alone does not identify a failed component. Apple’s troubleshooting guidance lists checks for settings, obstructions, and call reception, but it does not diagnose every crackle as a hardware fault or name a replacement part. The pattern is useful for describing the problem, not for proving its cause.
- Distortion across different audio: Check settings and whether a case, film, or debris is obstructing an opening.
- Crackling only during calls: Compare speakerphone and try again later or from a different location; Apple says network or reception could be involved.
- Muffled sound after the phone got wet: Water in the speaker or microphone may temporarily affect performance until it evaporates.
- Distortion that continues after basic checks: Arrange service rather than assuming which internal part needs replacement.
Apple does not publish a prevalence figure showing what share of these symptoms comes from debris, liquid, reception, or hardware failure, so a percentage-based diagnosis is not justified.
Safe checks to try first
- Check sound modes. Turn off Silent mode and check that Do Not Disturb is off.
- Remove anything that may block an opening. Temporarily remove the case, screen protector, or film. Check whether it covers the speaker or receiver.
- Inspect the openings. If you see dirt or debris, use only a small, clean, dry, soft-bristled brush gently on the outside opening. Do not push anything into it. Apple advises against compressed air and cleaning products.
- Test the alert sound. Open Settings > Sounds or Sounds & Haptics, then move the Ringtone and Alerts slider. If there is no sound or the speaker control is dimmed, Apple says service may be needed.
- Compare ordinary audio with a call. Try a call on speakerphone. If crackling happens only during calls, try again later or somewhere with different reception.
If the iPhone got wet and sounds muffled
Apple says water in the speaker or microphone may degrade sound until it evaporates. Wipe the phone with a soft, lint-free cloth, then leave it in a dry place with airflow, speaker-side down on a lint-free cloth. A fan blowing cool air toward the charging connector may help; do not use an external heat source.

Do not charge the iPhone or connect an accessory while it is wet. Apple advises waiting at least five hours after liquid exposure before wired charging or connecting an accessory, and the phone should be completely dry first. Do not insert an object into the speaker opening or charging connector, use compressed air or cleaning products, or disassemble the phone.
Water and dust resistance are not permanent and can decline with normal wear, according to Apple. If liquid damage is suspected, warranty coverage depends on the applicable terms and location: Apple says liquid damage is not covered under its One-Year Limited Warranty, while consumer-law rights may also apply.

When to arrange iPhone speaker service
Contact Apple Support or an appropriate service provider if distortion remains after checking settings, removing obstructions, and allowing a wet phone to dry fully. Seek service sooner if the speaker control is dimmed or the Ringtone and Alerts test produces no sound. Describe when the crackling occurs—during all audio or calls only—and whether it began after liquid exposure. Those details can help with diagnosis, but they do not establish which component has failed.
