If your iPhone photo looks blurrier after you change Aperture in Portrait mode, the subject may still be in focus: the setting changes the simulated depth effect, usually making the background softer. Reduce Depth Control or turn Portrait off to lessen that effect. If the subject itself is blurry, troubleshoot focus, close-up distance, or a smudged lens instead. The exact controls depend on your iPhone model and iOS version.
What changing Aperture does on iPhone
In the iPhone Portrait workflow, Aperture adjusts the Depth Control effect: the camera keeps a selected subject sharp while adding blur to the background and sometimes the foreground. On supported models, depth information can also be captured in Photo mode and used to apply a Portrait effect afterward. This is an adjustment to the depth-of-field look, not a way to refocus a subject that was captured soft. Apple explains the feature in its iPhone Portrait guide.
Camera terminology often associates a lower f-number with a wider aperture and shallower depth of field, but Apple’s guide does not establish one universal numeric direction or set of values for every iPhone. Use the effect preview and the labels shown on your own device rather than relying on a model-independent f-number instruction.
First identify where the blur is

Fix an overly blurred Portrait background
- Open the photo in Photos and tap Edit.
- Adjust the Depth Control slider to reduce the background blur. Apple says you can also tap a different subject to change the focus point on supported models.
- If you do not want the Portrait effect, turn Portrait off in the editing controls.
- If the edit makes the image worse, revert the saved edits to the original where that option is available.
Apple documents these controls in its Portrait photo editing guide and Portrait guide. Menu names and availability can vary by iPhone and iOS version.

Fix a subject that is out of focus
Set focus on the subject
In Camera, tap the subject on screen to move the focus area to it. On supported interfaces, touch and hold that area to lock focus and exposure (AE/AF Lock); tap again to unlock. This helps when the camera focused on the wrong part of the scene, but it cannot restore detail lost to movement during exposure or a camera fault. For close-ups, change distance or camera
If blur happens when photographing something very close, back up and try again. On supported iPhones, Camera can switch to Ultra Wide for macro photography; you can also tap .5x to switch to that camera. Apple recommends backing up or tapping .5x when a macro photo or video becomes blurry. This option is not available on every iPhone. See Apple’s macro photography guide.

Check the lenses if the whole image looks soft
Smudges on a camera lens can make photos look generally blurry. Apple recommends cleaning both the front and back camera lenses with a microfiber cloth. This can address dirt or fingerprints, but it will not correct an excessive Portrait effect, a missed focus target, close-range limitations, movement, or camera damage. If the camera remains blurry after basic troubleshooting, Apple advises seeking service through its camera and flash troubleshooting guide.
