An HTML image can fail because the browser cannot fetch its URL, cannot decode the response as an image, selects a different responsive source, or loads the image into a box that is hidden or clipped. Start with the rendered <img> in DevTools, then follow its exact request in Network: that separates URL and delivery problems from format, CSS, responsive-image, lazy-loading, and cross-origin issues.
1. Check the rendered image element and its URL
Inspect the final DOM in the browser, not just the template or component source. Confirm the element is actually an <img> and that it has a usable, nonempty src or srcset. MDN describes <img> as the element that embeds an image in a document, and notes that at least one of src and srcset is required: MDN: The Image Embed element.
Copy the image request URL from the element or the Network panel and open it directly. This reveals whether the browser is asking for the file you expect. HTML and image files are separate resources, fetched with separate HTTP(S) requests; a page loading successfully does not mean its image request succeeded. See MDN’s guide to images in HTML.
Relative paths use the page’s URL
A relative URL is resolved against the document’s base URL, not against the location of the source file where you wrote the markup. For example, <img src="images/chart.png"> on https://example.com/reports/june/ ordinarily requests https://example.com/reports/june/images/chart.png. If the asset is at the site root, use a root-relative path such as /images/chart.png, or use the correct absolute URL.

- Check whether deployment adds a subpath, such as
/app/, that changes where assets live. - Check capitalization: paths that work on a case-insensitive local filesystem can fail on a case-sensitive server.
- Encode spaces and other characters correctly in URLs; do not treat a filesystem path as a URL without checking its encoding.
- If a
<base>element is present, account for it when resolving relative URLs.
Empty, malformed, or inaccessible sources
Check for framework output that turns an absent value into src="", src="null", or an unintended URL. Empty sources and same-page image URLs can cause unexpected behavior, and MDN also identifies corrupted image data or metadata and unsupported formats as loading-error cases. A URL that redirects, requires authorization, or is blocked by the server may likewise fail even when it looks plausible in the markup.
2. Use Network to distinguish a missing file from a bad response
Open DevTools, select Network, reload the page, and filter for images. Select the exact request associated with the element. Inspect the request URL, status, redirects, response headers, and response body or preview. The status alone does not establish that the browser received a usable image.
| What you see | Likely failure layer | What to check next |
|---|---|---|
| 404 or 403 | Path, deployment, permissions, or access control | Open the request URL directly; verify the deployed path, filename case, and server permissions. |
| Repeated redirects or a redirect loop | URL routing or authentication | Inspect the redirect chain and confirm the final URL is accessible without an unintended login or redirect. |
| Successful status, but response is HTML or JSON | Wrong endpoint or an error page returned with a success status | Inspect the response body and content type; fix the route so it returns the image resource. |
| Successful status, but image preview fails | Corrupt or incomplete bytes, bad metadata, or unsupported image format | Validate the file and encoding, then serve a browser-supported image format with correct image data. |
| No request appears | Markup, lazy loading, responsive selection, or policy blocking | Inspect the rendered element, currentSrc, lazy-loading state, and Console messages. |
These are diagnostic patterns, not guarantees: status codes and server behavior depend on the site. If a request reports success but its body is an HTML error page, the browser still has no decodable image. Conversely, a valid image file can be fetched and decoded while CSS keeps it from being visible.

3. Check decoding, browser support, and security errors
Look in Console for image decode errors, Content Security Policy (CSP) blocks, mixed-content warnings, and CORS errors. A server response must contain decodable image bytes in a format supported by the browser. A filename ending in .png does not make HTML, JSON, or corrupted data into a PNG.
Recommended Free Tools
- Decode or format issue: inspect the response body and confirm the file is complete and genuinely encoded in the format being served. If using a newer format, verify it is supported in the target browsers or provide an appropriate fallback.
- CSP issue: check the page’s
img-srcpolicy and allow the image’s origin if it is intended to load. - Mixed content: a secure HTTPS page should use an appropriate secure image URL rather than relying on an insecure HTTP resource.
- CORS issue: ordinary display of a cross-origin image and access to its pixels for operations such as canvas use are not the same requirement. If the element uses
crossorigin, the server must permit the requesting origin with anAccess-Control-Allow-Originresponse header. Otherwise the request can fail with a CORS error. See MDN: The crossorigin attribute.
Do not add crossorigin as a speculative fix. Configure it only when your use case needs cross-origin access, and make sure the image server’s CORS policy matches.
4. Find images that loaded but are not visible
If Network shows a valid image response, inspect the element in DevTools Elements and Computed panels. The image may be present but have no visible box, be clipped, hidden, transparent, or covered by another element. Inspect the image and its ancestors, because a parent can hide or constrain the image even when the image’s own styles look normal.

display: none,visibility: hidden, oropacity: 0can make the image invisible.- A zero width or height, or layout rules that shrink the element, can leave it with no visible area.
overflow: hidden, clipping, transforms, or positioning can move or crop it out of view.- A higher stacking layer can place another element over the image.
Temporarily add an outline to the selected element in the Styles panel, for example outline: 2px solid red. If the outline is absent or unexpectedly small, investigate the box and its parent layout. If it is visible but the image is not, revisit the response and decode errors. Remove the temporary style after diagnosing.
5. Verify the browser’s responsive-image choice
With srcset, sizes, and <picture>, the browser may intentionally choose a candidate other than the URL you expected. Inspect the image’s currentSrc property in the Console or the selected request in Network; src alone may not be the resource currently displayed. MDN explains how srcset and sizes support responsive candidate selection: MDN: Responsive images.

Width-descriptor candidates such as small.jpg 480w and large.jpg 1200w describe the image resource widths. The sizes attribute tells the browser how wide the image is expected to render at different viewport conditions. If sizes does not reflect the actual layout, the browser can choose an unexpectedly small or large candidate. Confirm every candidate URL opens and that the declared sizes match the rendered layout.

Check picture conditions and fallback
A <picture> element can offer sources selected by media conditions or image type. If a condition matches, the browser may request that source instead of the nested image’s src. Check the media and type conditions, each selected source URL, and the nested <img> fallback. The fallback should itself have a usable source. See MDN: The Picture element.
<picture>
<source
type="image/avif"
srcset="/images/diagram.avif"
>
<source
media="(max-width: 600px)"
srcset="/images/diagram-small.jpg"
>
<img
src="/images/diagram.jpg"
alt="Diagram showing the deployment flow"
width="1200"
height="800"
>
</picture>
In this example, a browser’s supported source type and the media condition affect its choice. Test the selected request at the affected viewport and in the browser where the problem occurs; do not assume the nested src is the chosen file.
6. Account for lazy loading and image dimensions
An image marked loading="lazy" may not be requested until it is near the viewport. Scroll it into view before treating a missing request as proof the URL is broken. Lazy loading can also be harder to trigger predictably when the browser cannot determine the image’s layout area.

Set explicit width and height attributes when the dimensions are known. The browser can reserve space before the image arrives, improving layout stability and helping it determine the image’s area. CSS can still make the image responsive:
<img
src="/images/chart.png"
alt="Quarterly revenue by region"
width="1200"
height="800"
loading="eager"
style="max-width: 100%; height: auto;"
>
Use lazy loading for images that are not immediately needed, not as a blanket explanation for every missing image. If the image should appear immediately, remove lazy loading while diagnosing and check the request again.
7. Keep alternative text meaningful
Provide concise, useful alt text for an informative image so its content is available when it cannot be seen and to people using assistive technology. Use alt="" when the image is purely decorative and adds no content beyond nearby text. Alternative text does not repair a broken URL or make a failed image request succeed, but it is part of a correct, accessible image implementation.
8. A practical troubleshooting order
- Inspect the final DOM. Confirm there is an
<img>and a nonempty, usablesrcorsrcset. - Identify the actual URL. Copy the request URL from Network; if there is no request, inspect
currentSrc, responsive markup, lazy loading, and Console messages. - Open the URL directly. Correct relative-path resolution, filename case, URL encoding, deployment paths, and access requirements.
- Read the response. Check status, redirects, headers, and body. Ensure the response is decodable image data, not an error page or corrupt file.
- Check browser errors. Resolve decode, CSP, mixed-content, and—when
crossoriginis used—CORS messages. - Inspect layout. Check computed visibility, dimensions, clipping, stacking, and parent styles; use a temporary outline to locate the box.
- Test responsive and lazy behavior. Verify
currentSrc, candidate URLs,sizes, picture conditions, and whether scrolling into view triggers the request. - Retest the deployed page. A path that works locally may not survive the production base path, hosting rules, or asset deployment.
9. Or skip the browser setup
If you need a screenshot to document or inspect the rendered page while debugging, ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server for developers. A single request can return a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. The browser diagnostics above are still what identify why an individual image is missing; a screenshot can help you see the rendered result.

10. Common causes and fixes at a glance
| Symptom | Most useful first check |
|---|---|
| Broken-image icon or missing request | Inspect final src/srcset, currentSrc, and the Network request URL. |
| 404, 403, or redirect failure | Open the exact URL and verify path, case, deployment location, permissions, and redirect destination. |
| Success status but no image | Check whether the response body is actually supported, decodable image data. |
| Image works at one viewport but not another | Inspect srcset, sizes, picture media/type conditions, and the selected candidate. |
| Image appears only after scrolling | Check loading="lazy" and provide explicit dimensions. |
| Image request works but nothing is visible | Inspect computed styles, parent boxes, clipping, and stacking order. |
| Console reports CORS | If the element uses crossorigin, configure the image server to return an appropriate Access-Control-Allow-Origin header. |
Frequently Asked Questions
Does an image need both src and srcset?
No. An image needs at least one usable source; responsive markup can provide candidates through srcset, while src commonly supplies a fallback.
Does adding alt text make a broken image display?
No. Alt text supports accessibility and may be shown when an image cannot be displayed, but it does not fix the image URL, response, or rendering issue.
