iFixit rated the Fairphone 5 10/10 for repairability in 2023, its highest possible score. The phone earns that mark through easy access and replaceable modules: its back cover unclips, and the battery, screen, USB-C charging port and individual cameras can be replaced. The score does not mean every repair is effortless; iFixit also identified a difficult-to-replace fingerprint sensor and connectors that need careful handling.
What does iFixit’s 10/10 score mean?
In its 2023 evaluation, iFixit gave the Fairphone 5 a perfect 10/10. Fairphone also announced the result, calling it the highest possible score on iFixit’s repairability scale. The rating reflects how accessible and replaceable components are, along with factors such as repair information and tool requirements; it is not a guarantee that every owner can complete every repair without difficulty.
iFixit’s Fairphone 5 device page lists the phone’s repair resources and specifications. Its evaluation framework gives weight to freely available repair information, inexpensive and widely available tools, identifiable parts and modular access.
Why is the Fairphone 5 considered repairable?
It opens without prying off glued glass
The plastic back cover unclips, providing access without heating or prying away an adhesive-bonded glass back. That makes routine entry simpler and reduces the risk associated with opening many tightly sealed phones. iFixit teardown author Manuel Haeussermann described the design principle this way: “That’s what intuitive repair design is all about: it should be easy to do the right thing and complicated to do the wrong thing.”

Key components are separate modules
The battery, display, USB-C charging port and individual cameras are designed as replaceable modules. That can make a repair more targeted than replacing a larger assembly when only one component has failed. iFixit provides model-specific instructions for at least some of these jobs, including screen replacement and USB-C port replacement.
Repairability includes software support
iFixit reported Fairphone’s commitment to five Android version upgrades and at least eight years of security updates, with a ten-year goal. Haeussermann called software longevity the Fairphone 5’s main repairability feature. Longer support can extend the useful life of repairable hardware, though a stated goal should not be confused with a guarantee that every update will arrive on a particular date.

What do common Fairphone 5 repairs involve?
Replacing the screen
iFixit’s screen guide starts by removing the back cover and battery. The repair then requires removing eight 3.9 mm Phillips screws and disconnecting the screen’s press connector with a spudger. This is a specific, model-based procedure, but it still involves small connectors and careful handling; follow the full guide rather than treating the short sequence here as complete instructions.
Replacing the USB-C charging port
The charging-port guide also begins with the back cover and battery, then calls for removal of the loudspeaker. After disconnecting the charging-port connector, the port can be lifted from its slot. Consult the complete USB-C port repair guide for the full sequence.

Replacing the battery
The Fairphone 5 has a removable 4200 mAh battery, according to iFixit’s 2023 device information. The unclip back cover provides access to it; check the current Fairphone parts channel for a compatible replacement and instructions applicable to your region before ordering.
What are the limits of the score?
A high overall rating does not mean every component is equally easy to service. iFixit noted that the fingerprint sensor is difficult to replace and was not sold as a replacement part in its 2023 teardown. The motherboard and daughterboard layout also introduces connectors that must be carefully reconnected during repair.

The Fairphone 5 has IP55 protection, and iFixit noted that it improved water resistance while retaining easy access. That rating and the repair-friendly opening are design trade-offs, not evidence that the phone is waterproof or that opening it leaves its original protection unchanged. Follow Fairphone’s guidance after a repair and do not assume a repaired device retains its prior water resistance.

Is the Fairphone 5 really repairable?
Yes: the 10/10 reflects concrete repair-friendly choices, especially an easy-to-remove back and replaceable modules backed by model-specific guides. The score is most useful as an overall assessment, not a promise that every part is available, every repair is simple, or a device will retain its water resistance after opening. Check parts availability and repair guidance for your country and the specific component before starting.
