Developers usually move to Linux for one practical reason: the code they write, the tools they run, and the servers their software ships to often assume Linux. Working on a Linux system, or on Linux inside Windows, removes a layer of friction in those cases. It does not make every task faster, and it is not the right choice for every developer. This guide explains where the advantage is real, where it is not, and how to test Linux without replacing your whole machine on day one.

Where the advantage comes from: environment fit

The strongest argument for Linux is that it matches the environment many development projects were built for. Microsoft’s Windows Subsystem for Linux FAQ describes WSL as “a feature of the Windows operating system that enables you to run a Linux file system, along with Linux command-line tools and GUI apps, directly on Windows, alongside your traditional Windows desktop and apps.” The same FAQ notes that some tools assume Linux-like paths or files, and that some package dependencies are Linux-specific. Those mismatches are where build and runtime problems tend to appear on a Windows machine.

Paths, files and shell scripts

Build scripts, Makefiles, and setup instructions frequently use forward slashes, Unix permissions, and shell syntax such as bash conditionals. When these run on a native Linux desktop, they behave the way the author of the script expected. On Windows, you either translate them, run them through a compatibility layer, or accept that some steps will fail for reasons unrelated to your code.

Dependencies and deployment targets

If your application will run on Linux servers or in Linux containers, a Linux workstation shortens the distance between what you test and what you ship. Ubuntu and Fedora both publish developer-oriented tooling and container and virtualization support, which means the workstation can run the same kinds of components as the production environment. The benefit depends on your deployment target: if your software only runs on Windows, Linux adds little.

Three ways to get a Linux environment

You do not need to choose a full OS replacement first. The options differ mainly in how much of your existing Windows setup you keep.

Option Best fit Trade-off
WSL on Windows You need Linux command-line tools and a Linux filesystem, but Windows applications remain central to your work. Microsoft positions WSL for developers who want Linux tools and Windows productivity applications together. It is a Linux environment hosted inside Windows, not a replacement for the workstation OS. You must decide which filesystem stores each project and how Windows and Linux tools will access the same files.
Ubuntu Desktop (native install) You want a full Linux desktop with official developer toolchain documentation and a long-term support release option. You must confirm hardware and application compatibility, and accept Ubuntu’s release and support schedule. Installing alongside Windows or replacing it requires backing up first.
Fedora Workstation (native install) You want newer packages and the developer container and virtualization features the Fedora Project highlights. Each version receives updates for approximately 13 months, so you will need to upgrade regularly.

Choosing between Ubuntu and Fedora

Both distributions are suitable for development, but their maintenance models differ, and that difference matters more than the desktop look.

Ubuntu: long-term support releases

Canonical describes Ubuntu LTS releases as arriving every two years with five years of standard support. This suits developers who prefer a stable base and do not want to upgrade every year. Check the current release status on Canonical’s site before choosing a specific version, because support windows and the latest LTS number change over time.

Fedora: shorter update cycles

The Fedora Project states that “each version is updated for approximately 13 months, and upgrades between versions are quick and easy.” If you want newer packages and are comfortable upgrading about once a year, this cadence fits. If you want to set up a machine once and leave it for several years, it does not.

Developer setup material that exists

On May 23, 2025, the Ubuntu Foundations team announced a new documentation set called Ubuntu for Developers, which provides guidance for using Ubuntu Desktop as a development platform. The material covers setup for common toolchains, including Python, Go, Rust, GCC, .NET, and Java, along with related guidance on IDEs, debuggers, linters, and formatters. This is useful if you want a documented starting point rather than assembling a toolchain from forum posts. It is vendor documentation, so verify version-specific commands against your release.

Hardware and application checks before you switch

Linux compatibility varies by device and by the software you depend on. Before installing, check the following:

Usage figures: read them carefully

Canonical’s developer page cites figures from Perforce OpenLogic’s 2025 State of Open Source Report: Ubuntu 56.73%, Debian 31.73%, and Fedora 14.42%. These numbers describe which open-source technologies responding organizations use to support software infrastructure. They are multiple-choice results, so percentages do not add up to 100%. They are not desktop market share, and they do not tell you what percentage of individual developers use each distribution.

What the evidence does not show

No independent study establishes that Linux makes an individual developer more productive. Canonical’s older whitepaper on developer productivity is vendor-authored promotional material, so treat its claims as marketing rather than measured results. The reasons to switch are environment fit, access to the tools your project needs, and deployment alignment. Speed gains are not established by the sources available.

A low-commitment way to try Linux

  1. List the projects you work on and note which build scripts, shell commands, and dependencies they require. Mark any that already run only on Linux or in Linux containers.
  2. Check your hardware against the certification list and your required applications against Linux alternatives, as described above.
  3. If you work mostly in Windows, install WSL first. Open PowerShell as administrator and run wsl --install, then restart when prompted. Microsoft’s WSL documentation covers the details for your Windows version.
  4. When running WSL, keep projects that depend on Linux tools inside the Linux filesystem rather than in a Windows-mounted folder, so that the tools operate on the files they expect. Test one project end to end before moving others.
  5. If you want a native Linux desktop, prepare installation media on a USB flash drive, back up your data, and follow the Ubuntu or Fedora installation guide for installing alongside your existing operating system. Confirm the drive is large enough for the image you download.

Work through one real project in the new environment before deciding whether to keep it. That test will tell you more than any general claim about Linux.

The Bottom Line

Choose Linux when your projects, their dependencies, or their deployment target are Linux-native and you can accept the upgrade schedule of the distribution you pick. If Windows applications remain central to your work but you still need Linux tooling, WSL is the lower-risk starting point.
