The author’s answer to leaving Windows 11 was macOS on an M4 Mac mini—not Linux. In a first-person article published by Indie Kings on September 13, 2025, the author describes a review unit gradually becoming their main work computer. The reasons were personal: fewer unwanted interruptions in their experience, access to the applications they needed, and enough customization without the friction they associated with daily Linux use.
How a review unit became the author’s main computer
The author says a desktop accounts for 95% of their work time. That figure describes their own work pattern, not a broader statistic about computer users. Their M4 Mac mini began as a review unit; over time, they used it more often until macOS became their preferred system for work.
The shift was notable because the author had written favorably about Linux and used it on laptops. They did not reject Linux or stop experimenting with it. They simply found macOS a better fit for their primary desktop workload.
Why macOS suited this author’s work
Fewer unwanted prompts, in their experience
The author recalls fewer unwanted prompts on macOS after setup than they experienced with Windows 11, where service promotions had frustrated them. They also remember one unwanted prompt after the initial macOS setup, associated with Apple’s rollout of generative AI features. These are personal recollections, not a controlled comparison or a measurement of how often either operating system displays prompts.

The applications they needed were available
During the transition, the author says Microsoft 365 applications ran natively on macOS. They later moved mainly to WPS Office and found support for those tools more active on macOS and Windows than on Linux. That is their account of the software they used; it does not establish that every application, peripheral, or specialized workflow will work on a particular Mac or Linux setup.
A middle ground between control and convenience
The author values customization and control, but found macOS customizable enough for their needs while avoiding some of the friction they associated with daily Linux use. They mention customizing app icons with third-party tools. This was a matter of personal preference, not a claim that macOS offers the same degree of control as Linux.

A familiar productivity workflow
Raycast was one of the tools the author used in their macOS workflow. Its presence helps explain what suited this particular setup; it does not mean the tool is required to switch operating systems or will benefit every user.

The author continued using Linux on laptops for experimentation and specific uses. They describe it as a strong option for people who prioritize customization, privacy, and control. At the same time, they mention occasional compatibility problems and tasks that can require more technical knowledge. Their assessment is not a verdict on every Linux distribution, device, or user.

Likewise, the author’s frustration with Windows 11 prompts does not show that all Windows users encounter the same prompts or encounter them at the same rate. The article does not report a survey or compare identical computer configurations under controlled conditions.
How to decide whether macOS or Linux fits your Windows replacement
The useful lesson is not that one operating system is best for everyone. It is to start with the work you need to do, then check whether the target system and hardware support it. Before changing platforms, compare these factors:

- Essential applications: Confirm that the applications you rely on are available for the operating system you are considering, and check vendor support for the features your work requires.
- Peripherals and workflows: Check whether your required devices and end-to-end tasks work on the specific hardware you plan to use.
- Control and customization: Decide how much system-level control you want, and whether a more managed experience would be a worthwhile trade-off.
- Setup and troubleshooting: Consider how much time and technical effort you are willing to spend configuring the system and resolving compatibility issues.
- Hardware changes: Include the cost and effort of replacing or adapting your current hardware in the decision.
These are decision checks drawn from the author’s stated reasons, not a universal compatibility guide. In particular, do not assume that an application’s availability on one operating system guarantees that its full feature set or related workflow will carry over to another.
What the story does—and does not—say about the next step
The author says they were considering a MacBook as a possible next step. The article does not say that they bought one. The confirmed destination in the account is the M4 Mac mini serving as their primary work computer.

For readers weighing a similar move, the story offers a useful example of a choice shaped by a person’s actual work: the operating system that won was the one that fit their applications, preferences, and desktop routine. It is not evidence that macOS is universally less interruptive than Windows 11, or that Linux is unsuitable for a primary computer.
