A rootless container can have its own network namespace and still lack a route to the outside world. In his account of Boxr, developer Ryo Tanaka explains why he built UserNet: a small user-mode networking path that connects a container’s virtual network to ordinary host sockets without requiring the engine to configure privileged host networking. It is a pragmatic fallback and a visible learning surface—not, by Tanaka’s description, a mature general-purpose TCP/IP stack.
Why does a rootless container need a networking path?
A network namespace gives a container its own interfaces and routes. That isolation does not create a connection from those interfaces to the host network. A conventional bridge-based setup may depend on configuring host bridges, veth pairs, and NAT; a rootless engine cannot assume it has permission to do that.
Tanaka’s design addresses the gap in user space. Instead of relying exclusively on privileged host networking or a separate helper, Boxr can take packets from a virtual interface and translate their traffic into ordinary host UDP or TCP socket operations. That puts an explicit networking path under the engine’s control, while also making packet parsing part of the engine itself.
How does a packet travel through Boxr UserNet?
Tanaka describes the outbound path as:
- A container application makes a request through a POSIX socket.
- The Linux network stack in the container’s network namespace turns the request into packets and sends them through a TAP interface.
- Boxr’s UserNet reads the Ethernet frames from TAP, processes the relevant network protocols, and uses an ordinary host UDP or TCP socket to reach the destination.
For return traffic, UserNet receives data through the host socket, reconstructs the corresponding packets, and writes Ethernet frames back to TAP for the container’s network stack.

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
The article documents example virtual-network defaults of 10.0.2.15 for the container, 10.0.2.2 for its gateway, and 10.0.2.3 for DNS. These are Boxr’s described defaults, not universal Linux or container settings. In this setup, UserNet answers ARP requests for virtual addresses, responds to ICMP echo requests addressed to the virtual gateway, and forwards DNS queries through a host UDP socket to a resolver.
What protocols does UserNet handle?
Tanaka describes the implementation as handling Ethernet, ARP, IPv4, ICMP, UDP DNS forwarding, and a basic TCP proxy path. That is the author’s account of its scope; it is not an independent protocol audit or evidence of complete conformance.

The packet-processing structure is deliberately explicit: Ethernet dispatches to ARP or IPv4, and IPv4 dispatches to ICMP, UDP, or TCP. The author emphasizes checking lengths, bounding declared payload sizes, and applying checksums to the correct bytes. Rust can prevent broad classes of memory-safety defects, but it cannot make protocol logic correct automatically.
Why implement TCP, and what remains difficult?
For TCP traffic, Tanaka says UserNet tracks connection setup and teardown flags along with sequence and acknowledgment numbers. It uses host TCP sockets for outbound connections, then translates returned data back into packets for the container. This proxy path lets applications use the container’s ordinary TCP interface without requiring UserNet to implement every part of a full TCP stack.

The difficult work is in the cases beyond a straightforward exchange. Tanaka identifies retransmissions, duplicate acknowledgments, out-of-order segments, window scaling, backpressure, half-closes, resets, long-lived streams, and failure cleanup as areas that keep the implementation from being a mature general-purpose stack. Packet-loop concurrency and throughput also remain areas for further work; the article supplies no measured performance comparison.
Why put networking inside the engine instead of using a helper?
Tanaka frames the choice as a trade-off rather than a universal advantage. The article says Boxr uses pasta when it is installed and falls back to UserNet otherwise; it also names explicit UserNet and pasta modes, as well as bridge, host, and none networking modes. This describes the project behavior in the article, not a guarantee about the current CLI in every release.

| Consideration | Embedded UserNet | External helper such as pasta |
|---|---|---|
| Installation dependency | Can provide a fallback when pasta is unavailable, according to Tanaka. | Requires the helper to be installed to use that path. |
| Lifecycle ownership | Networking is integrated into the engine’s own lifecycle. | Networking is handled by a separate component. |
| Inspectability and boundaries | Packet handling is visible within the engine’s implementation. | The implementation boundary lies outside the engine. |
| Fault-domain separation | Packet parsing is inside the runtime’s fault domain. | A separate helper provides a distinct process boundary. |
| Protocol maturity | Tanaka describes a basic path and lists substantial TCP edge cases still to address. | The article does not provide a comparative protocol-maturity assessment. |
| Concurrency and throughput | The article identifies these as areas for further work; it gives no benchmark. | The article provides no measured comparison. |
The embedded approach therefore buys control, fewer external dependencies, and an inspectable path at the cost of bringing packet parsing into the runtime’s fault domain. The article does not establish that UserNet is faster or more secure than pasta or another external helper.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Is the embedded TCP implementation production-ready?
Tanaka calls Boxr beta and characterizes UserNet as a working fallback and learning surface, not a replacement for mature networking tools. He calls for adversarial protocol review and sustained real-world use. The account includes no independent security assessment, benchmark, or comprehensive conformance results, so it does not support a stronger readiness claim.

“I would rather make the boundary explicit than hide it behind the phrase ‘TCP/IP stack.’”
That qualification is central to the design: UserNet is useful precisely because it makes the networking boundary visible, but the existence of a functioning TCP proxy path should not be mistaken for proof that every TCP behavior is handled robustly.
