Humanoid robots make practical sense when a job takes place in an environment built for people: aisles, doors, stairs, workbenches, tools and controls. A human-like body may let a robot work in some of those spaces without redesigning the facility. That does not make humanoids universal helpers, or automatically better than a robot designed for one task. Their value depends on whether their mobility and reach solve a real problem better than simpler alternatives.
Why give a robot a human-like shape?
The strongest argument is compatibility with existing human environments. Many factories and warehouses already have walkways, work surfaces, equipment and interfaces arranged around people. In some settings, a robot with a human-scale body and the ability to move and manipulate objects could take on work without requiring every station to be rebuilt.
The shape may also be useful when a site needs one mobile machine to handle more than one kind of task. But that is a potential advantage, not proof that a humanoid will be faster, safer or less expensive than purpose-built automation. If the work is stable and repetitive, a fixed robot or wheeled machine may be a better fit.
In an August 2025 statement, International Federation of Robotics President Takayuki Ito described humanoids as a possible complement to existing robots, not a replacement for them. The IFR also said the timing and extent of mass adoption remain uncertain. Read the IFR’s “Vision and Reality” statement.

What humanoid robots are doing today
Early commercial pilots tend to focus on known, repeatable jobs in structured environments, rather than open-ended work. McKinsey’s October 2025 review describes trials involving intrafactory component movement, production-line material transport and repetitive tote movement in warehouse zones. It also describes inspection and monitoring in hazardous industrial settings. These applications rely on familiar routes and tasks that can be bounded more readily than general-purpose work.
Those examples are pilots and early applications, not evidence that humanoids are already broadly profitable or reliable at scale. McKinsey notes a substantial gap between demonstrations and performance that is both reliable and economically justifiable at scale. McKinsey’s review of the move from concept to commercial use discusses both the trials and that gap.
What the Hollywood version gets wrong
Fiction often depicts a robot that can understand a changing situation and perform almost any human task. Current commercial activity is much narrower: controlled or structured settings, defined jobs and significant technical and operational constraints. A humanoid’s appearance does not mean it has human-level dexterity, judgment or adaptability.

Nor is a humanoid automatically the best choice just because a workplace was designed for people. Gartner notes that wheeled polyfunctional robots can be more efficient for supply-chain operations, and that task-specific robots can outperform humanoids on warehouse throughput and uptime. For predictable, high-volume work, the relevant comparison is with automation available now—not with an imagined future machine.
Gartner’s January 2026 forecast expects fewer than 100 companies to move humanoid proof-of-concept projects beyond experimentation through 2028, and fewer than 20 to reach production for manufacturing and supply-chain use cases. Gartner expects most production deployments in that period to remain tightly controlled. These are forecasts, not counts of deployments already completed. See Gartner’s forecast and qualifications.

- Task fit: Does the job involve changing activities or variable objects, or is it a stable, repetitive operation that a specialized machine can handle?
- Environment fit: Do stairs, narrow passages, human-sized work surfaces or existing interfaces create a meaningful obstacle for other robot types?
- Throughput and uptime: Can the robot sustain the required work rate and operating schedule? Compare it with task-specific alternatives on the same job.
- Safety: Can it work near people with dependable sensing, collision mitigation and predictable behavior? Some cited warehouse trials use semisegregated zones, which is not the same as unrestricted operation alongside people.
- Energy and charging: Measure runtime under the real work pattern, including standing, walking and carrying loads—not just an idle or demonstration scenario.
- Integration and total cost: Include the robot, maintenance, charging, software, safety measures, workflow changes and any site modifications. Weigh these costs against measurable benefits rather than assuming that using existing infrastructure guarantees savings.
Fraunhofer IPA’s 2026 evaluation work offers a useful model for looking beyond a robot’s appearance: it considers basic technologies and capabilities, complex tasks, cleanroom suitability, functional safety, cybersecurity and energy efficiency. Read Fraunhofer IPA’s description of its application-focused analyses.
What specific tests reveal—and what they do not
Fraunhofer IPA reported test results for one configuration: a Unitree G1 EDU-4 with Dex3-1 three-finger hands, delivered in May 2025 with firmware 1.04. In its testing, the institute recorded collision forces above 500 newtons. It also reported maximum operating times of 2 hours and 49 minutes standing still, and 1 hour and 49 minutes in a typical standing-and-walking scenario. These figures apply to that tested setup, not to all humanoid robots; the report says the Bluetooth vulnerability it identified was resolved after testing.
Such measurements illustrate why application-specific evaluation matters. A result for one robot, configuration and test scenario cannot establish how another system will perform on a different shift, route or task. The same caution applies to claims about safety, runtime and readiness: assess the machine that would actually be deployed under the conditions it would actually face.

Why interest does not yet equal adoption
Robotics attracts broad business interest, but general interest should not be mistaken for humanoid adoption. In a Gartner survey of 506 supply-chain employees conducted from October through December 2023, 51% said robots were highly disruptive technologies and about 60% said robots were highly important to their businesses. Those figures cover robots broadly, not humanoid robots specifically. Gartner’s 2024 release describes the survey.
The business case for a humanoid must still be established for a particular job. A useful form factor is not enough on its own: the system must perform safely and consistently, integrate with the workflow, and justify its total cost against alternatives.
