Human testers still matter because software quality is not just a matter of running checks. Automation can repeat known tests quickly and at scale; people decide which behaviors matter, explore what was not anticipated, and interpret whether a result is a real problem for users. The strongest testing practice combines both.
What automation does well—and where it stops
Automated tests are particularly useful when a check is stable, repeatable, and needs to run often: for example, verifying that a familiar workflow still works after a code change. Scripts can execute the same steps consistently and cover many inputs without a person repeating each action.
Microsoft Research describes the trade-off in testing machine-learning models: automated approaches can explore large portions of an input space quickly, while user-driven testing can examine a wider range of behavioral questions but is labor-intensive and limited by what people think to try. That comparison concerns model testing, not every kind of software, but it illustrates why speed and judgment are different strengths. Microsoft Research, May 23, 2022
| Testing need | Automation is useful when… | Human involvement matters when… |
|---|---|---|
| Repeatability | The expected result is clear and should be checked after every relevant change. | The expected result itself is unclear or depends on context. |
| Scale and speed | The same checks must run across many inputs or builds. | The team must decide which inputs, risks, or user situations deserve attention. |
| Unexpected behavior | A known failure pattern can be encoded as a regression test. | The tester needs to adapt to surprising behavior and explore related paths. |
| Interpretation | A result can be judged reliably by a defined rule. | A result is ambiguous, consequential, or tied to user or business needs. |
These are allocation choices, not a universal ranking of people against tools. A useful automated check can still be designed, selected, and assessed by people.

What human testers contribute
Choosing meaningful coverage
A test suite can only check what someone has decided to check. Testers use product knowledge, user needs, and risk to choose scenarios: which workflows matter most, what might fail at boundaries, and what the consequences of a defect would be. This helps prevent a large volume of low-value passing checks from being mistaken for proof that a product works well.
Exploring beyond the script
Exploratory testing lets a tester learn about the software while testing it, adapting their next action to what just happened. A confusing error, an inconsistent screen, or an unexpected state can prompt a new line of investigation that a fixed script would not take unless someone anticipated and encoded it.

Exploratory testing is not merely an informal substitute for planning. ISTQB’s 2017–18 survey listed it among the five test-design techniques used by surveyed teams. That is historical evidence about those respondents, not a current estimate of how many teams use the technique today. The survey received more than 2,000 responses from 92 countries. Interpreting results in context
A test can fail for reasons that do not have the same meaning: an actual product defect, a test setup issue, an unstable dependency, or an expectation that needs clarification. A human reviewer can investigate the context and decide what to do next. Conversely, an automated check may pass while missing a usability problem or a behavior nobody thought to encode.

Bringing domain and communication skills
Testing involves more than operating test tools. In its 2017–18 survey, ISTQB identified soft skills, business or domain knowledge, and business-analysis skills among the non-testing skills expected of a typical tester. These abilities help translate requirements into useful checks and explain findings in terms that developers, product owners, and users can act on.
How human testers can work with AI testing tools
AI can help produce candidate tests, but a person can supply the focus and review needed to make those tests useful. Microsoft Research’s AdaTest provides a specific example in natural-language-processing model testing: a person identifies a topic or behavior of concern, an LLM proposes tests, and a person selects valid candidates and groups them into semantically related topics. The resulting tests can support iterative debugging and retesting.

This is a particular research workflow, not evidence that every AI testing tool works the same way. In AdaTest’s user studies, experts found approximately five times more failures with AdaTest on all topics, and non-experts benefited by up to 10 times. Those reported results belong to that study and should not be treated as a general productivity multiplier for software QA. The researchers also note that fixes can introduce new issues, making adapted retesting important. Microsoft Research’s AdaTest discussion
A practical division of work is to let tools generate or execute repeatable checks while testers decide what to probe, reject invalid suggestions, organize findings, and retest relevant behavior after a fix. The human role is not simply to approve whatever a model produces; it is to keep the testing objective connected to the behavior that matters.

Can AI replace software testers?
The available evidence supports collaboration in defined testing workflows, but it does not settle whether AI will increase or reduce tester employment. ISTQB’s survey dates to 2017–18, and AdaTest’s findings concern a study of NLP model testing. Neither establishes current job growth or loss, a global tester workforce count, or that people outperform automation in every task.
ISTQB’s professional materials cover areas including AI testing, testing with generative AI, test-automation strategy, acceptance testing, usability testing, and security testing. They indicate a range of learning topics, not that a particular certification is required by employers or guarantees a hiring advantage. ISTQB, What We Do
How to divide testing work in practice
- Automate stable checks. Turn frequently repeated, clearly defined expectations into automated tests, especially checks that should run after changes.
- Use people to choose risk. Ask testers to identify important workflows, user contexts, and edge cases that deserve coverage.
- Explore when the behavior is uncertain. Give testers room to investigate unexpected results and follow the evidence rather than only replaying fixed steps.
- Review ambiguous or consequential findings. Have a person assess the context before treating a failure as a confirmed product defect or dismissing it as noise.
- Retest after fixes. Run the relevant checks again and adapt exploratory tests where a change may have affected related behavior.
For visual regression or page-rendering checks, a screenshot can serve as one piece of test evidence, but it does not decide whether a page is usable or whether the captured state is the right one. ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server; its captures can help collect visual artifacts while testers remain responsible for choosing scenarios and interpreting them. It can accept cookie or consent banners before capture and remove more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each step can be turned off. Its response identifies page verdict and billing status, and clean-shot failures such as bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed.
ScreenshotNeo also offers an MCP server with tools for AI agents, including Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients. Its free plan includes 1,000 shots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots. Feature availability is stated as applying to every plan. See ScreenshotNeo documentation for details, or sign up free for 1,000 screenshots a month with no card.

Does exploratory testing mean testing without any preparation?
No. Testers can work from a goal or risk area and adapt their actions as they learn; exploratory describes the iterative relationship between learning, test design, and execution.
Does ISTQB require a particular certification to work as a tester?
The cited ISTQB materials describe certification and learning areas, but they do not establish that a particular credential is required for employment.
