Home robots are getting arms because manufacturers want them to do more than navigate floors or run one appliance: an arm can move selected objects and, in larger designs, interact with household devices. But these products are at very different stages. A robot vacuum’s limited object-moving feature is not the same as a home-assistant robot shown in chore demonstrations, and neither proves that robots can reliably take over housework.

Why are home robots getting arms?

An arm adds manipulation to a robot’s existing ability to move around. A vacuum can clean a floor, but it cannot clear an object from its path or carry that item elsewhere unless it has a way to grasp and move it. Manufacturers see arms as a route from single-purpose machines toward robots that can interact with more objects and appliances.

The ambition differs by product. Roborock positions the Saros Z70’s foldable arm for handling a limited set of small objects. LG’s CLOiD is a larger mobile home robot concept, described alongside scenarios involving objects and connected appliances. Those are distinct products, not evidence of a single category with uniform capabilities.

What can a robot vacuum with an arm actually do?

Roborock Saros Z70: bounded object handling

Roborock describes the Saros Z70 as a mass-produced robot vacuum with a foldable five-axis mechanical arm, launched in January 2025. On its current US product page, the company says the robot can recognize socks, sandals, crumpled tissues, and towels weighing under 300 g for item relocation. The feature requires setup in the app, and Roborock says performance varies with software and environmental conditions. These are manufacturer specifications and claims, not an independent assessment of reliability. Roborock Saros Z70

That is a narrow extension of a cleaner’s job: moving certain recognized objects, not picking up arbitrary clutter or performing general household chores. The supported item list and weight limit matter more than the mere presence of an arm.

LG CLOiD: a broader home-assistant vision

LG described CLOiD in its January 4, 2026 announcement as having two arms, each with seven degrees of freedom, and five individually actuated fingers per hand. The company showed planned household scenarios at CES 2026, including retrieving food and initiating laundry-related tasks, and described integration with its ThinQ ecosystem and connected appliances. These specifications and scenarios are from LG; they do not establish general retail availability or independent task reliability. LG’s CLOiD announcement

LG’s statement of intent is clear: Steve Baek, president of LG’s Home Appliance Solution Company, said the robot is “designed to naturally engage with and understand the humans it serves, providing an optimized level of household help.” That is the company’s design goal, not an independently verified description of what CLOiD can reliably do in homes.

Can a home robot fold laundry or load a dishwasher?

The available examples support chore demonstrations and appliance-related ambitions, not a conclusion that current arm-equipped robots can reliably fold laundry or load a dishwasher in ordinary homes. Picking up an object is only one step. A robot also has to identify the right object, grasp it without dropping or damaging it, understand what action is needed, operate the appliance correctly, and recover when something changes.

LG has described a broader strategy around “Appliance Robots,” such as robot vacuums, and “Robotized Appliances,” such as refrigerators with automatic doors. Its corporate roadmap discusses a robotics lab and partnership work, but these are company plans and initiatives rather than proof of dependable household performance. LG Corp’s robotics roadmap

Research illustrates why the gap between a demonstration and a dependable household helper is substantial. The ApBot paper, dated May 26, 2025, addresses converting appliance manuals into grounded actions and executing them; its abstract reports improved task success over direct large vision-language-model control policies in its simulated and real-world appliance experiments. That result is limited to the paper’s method and experiments, not a guarantee of universal reliability. ApBot paper

Why is reliable interaction so difficult?

  • Recognition: The robot must identify an object or control correctly, even when it is partly hidden or looks different from an expected example.
  • Grasping and movement: It must handle objects with different shapes, positions, and fragility, within the arm’s physical limits.
  • Appliance operation: Controls and procedures vary. A robot may need to interpret instructions, choose the right control, and confirm that the appliance responded.
  • Multi-step execution: Small errors can compound across a task; a successful first movement does not ensure the later steps will work.
  • Home variability: Lighting, shadows, layouts, and inconsistent demonstrations can make the same task harder in a different home or on another attempt.

The Dobb-E authors’ 2023 study, “On Bringing Robots Home,” tested 109 tasks across 10 homes and reported an 81% success rate for their system in that experimental setup. They also reported collecting 13 hours of demonstration data in 22 New York City homes. Those figures describe the researchers’ system and study, not home robots as a whole or a guarantee for any commercial product. Dobb-E study

How do the arm-equipped examples compare?

Example Task scope Status and evidence Important limits
Roborock Saros Z70 Moving selected recognized small items as part of a robot vacuum’s functions Manufacturer product page; Roborock describes it as launched in January 2025 Listed items and towel weight limit apply; app setup is required, and performance varies with software and environment
LG CLOiD Broader object handling and connected-appliance scenarios LG announcement and CES 2026 demonstrations Company-described specifications and scenarios do not establish retail availability or independent reliability

The comparison is about different levels of ambition and evidence, not a contest between equivalent products. A product page for a bounded feature and a public demonstration of a broader concept answer different questions.

Are robot arms useful in a normal home?

They could be useful when a task is narrow, the object is within the robot’s capabilities, and the setup is predictable. For the Saros Z70, the practical claim is specifically about moving a stated set of objects under stated conditions. For broader household help, the demonstrations show what manufacturers want robots to do, while the studies show that reliable interaction in varied homes remains a difficult engineering problem.

There is no trustworthy market-wide statistic in the cited sources establishing how many home robot appliances have arms or how quickly that number is increasing. The trend is visible in specific products and announcements, but it should not be described with an invented industry growth rate. Midea’s 2025 annual report, filed March 30, 2026, discusses appliance robotization using AI and robotics, including visual recognition, robotic arms, and human-machine interaction; it distinguishes industrial factory work from commercial and domestic directions.
