A successful navigation—and even document.readyState == "complete"—does not guarantee that a web app has finished rendering. Wait for a page-specific element that proves the content is usable. If it is still missing, check the final URL, frames, browser and driver versions, startup logs, and differences between headless and visible runs.
What “empty page” can mean
First establish what is empty. A blank screenshot, an empty driver.page_source, a missing results area, and a page containing only a sign-in or challenge screen are different failures. They point to different causes. The title alone does not identify the target URL, Selenium language binding, browser and driver versions, capabilities, or logs, so there is no single page-specific cause that can be diagnosed without those details.
Selenium’s navigation wait is tied to a document loading milestone, not necessarily to the completion of a modern application’s rendering. As the Selenium Waiting Strategies documentation explains, “The readyState only concerns itself with loading assets defined in the HTML, but loaded JavaScript assets often result in changes to the site.” A page can therefore reach its load event while JavaScript is still fetching data, creating elements, or revealing content.
Headless mode does not, by itself, mean JavaScript is disabled. Modern Chrome headless shares Chrome’s browser code, but differences in startup environment, permissions, flags, viewport, profile, or a site’s response can still affect what you see.

Use an explicit wait for usable content
Wait for a condition tied to the page’s actual purpose: for example, a results container becoming visible, a known heading appearing, or a loading indicator disappearing. Selenium’s explicit waits are designed for elements that JavaScript creates or reveals. A wait for document.readyState alone only checks a browser milestone; it does not establish that an asynchronous application is ready.
Here is a Python example using Selenium’s explicit-wait pattern. Replace the example URL and CSS selector with ones for your page. The selector should identify content you need, rather than a generic element that appears before the useful results.

driver.quit()The 20-second timeout is an example for this code, not a universal wait duration. Choose a limit appropriate to the application and environment. A fixed sleep can be too short on a slow run and waste time on a fast one; a condition-based wait continues as soon as the expected state appears and gives a useful failure when it does not.
Choose the condition carefully
- Element exists: useful when presence in the DOM is enough, even if the element is hidden.
- Element is visible: appropriate when the script needs displayed content or must interact with it.
- Application-specific state: when the site exposes a reliable completion marker, wait for that rather than assuming that any one element means all work is finished.
Do not add several arbitrary sleeps to make a flaky run appear reliable. Identify the state the next action requires and wait for that state.

Understand Selenium’s page-load strategies
Selenium’s normal, eager, and none strategies control when navigation returns. They do not replace an explicit wait for asynchronous application content.

Set a strategy only when its navigation behavior suits the task; keep a separate explicit wait for the content your script needs. A faster return from get() is not proof that the application is ready.
Capture evidence immediately after navigation
When the expected content is missing, collect a small diagnostic bundle at the failure point. Save it before closing the driver or retrying, so redirects and transient error states are not lost.
- Record
driver.current_urlanddriver.title. Compare the final URL with the one you requested; a redirect can lead to a login page, an error route, or another unexpected destination. - Save
driver.page_sourceand a screenshot. The source shows the current DOM serialization, while a screenshot shows what Chrome displayed at that moment. - Note the exact wait condition and whether it timed out. A timeout for a results selector is more informative than a general statement that navigation returned an empty page.
- Record the runtime details: Chrome version, ChromeDriver version, Selenium binding version, operating system and user, Chrome binary path, arguments, proxy configuration, and page-load strategy.
Interpret the evidence together. A non-empty source with a blank-looking screenshot may indicate a display or styling issue. A page source containing a challenge or login screen is not an empty document; it is a different page state. A changed URL points toward a redirect worth investigating before changing Chrome flags.

Check frames, shadow DOM, and site-specific states
If the page source contains content but Selenium cannot find the expected element, check where the element lives. Content inside an iframe is not located as though it were in the top-level document: switch to the relevant frame before searching, then return to the default content when finished. Sites may also place content in shadow DOM, which requires locating the relevant host and accessing its shadow root using the APIs available in your Selenium binding.
Authentication redirects and bot-detection responses are other possibilities to verify against the target site’s actual behavior. A page may render a sign-in view or a challenge instead of the expected content. Inspect the captured URL, title, source, and screenshot rather than treating every such result as a Chrome rendering failure.
Verify Chrome, ChromeDriver, and startup conditions
The Chrome and ChromeDriver major versions must match. Check the versions of the binaries actually used by the run, not only the versions you intended to install. A different binary earlier in the system path or a Selenium configuration that points to another Chrome executable can make local version checks misleading. ChromeDriver’s startup log can help identify which browser binary was launched.
On Linux, running Chrome as root is a documented startup-crash risk. ChromeDriver troubleshooting identifies root execution as a common cause of Chrome crashing during startup. Prefer running the browser as a regular user. The --no-sandbox option is a discouraged, unsupported workaround, not a routine fix for an empty page; do not add it without understanding the security and environment trade-offs.

Enable ChromeDriver logging and run the same Chrome binary directly under the same account when investigating startup failures. This separates browser startup problems from page-rendering problems. Record the logs and environment rather than changing several flags at once.
Compare headless and visible runs systematically
If the page works with a visible browser but not in headless mode, run both with the same URL, account, browser binary, driver, and as many matching options as possible. Then compare the evidence rather than assuming that headless mode disables JavaScript.
- Viewport: set a deliberate window size. Responsive layouts can show different elements at different viewport widths or heights.
- User profile and permissions: check whether the runs use the same profile and have comparable access to required files, downloads, and other resources.
- GPU and other flags: compare arguments and remove unnecessary flags one at a time. Avoid accumulating old flags without evidence that they apply to the current Chrome version.
- Site response: compare the final URL and rendered page. The site may treat the two runs differently, including returning a bot check.
For modern Selenium, use the documented headless argument --headless=new where appropriate. Chrome’s headless behavior has changed across versions, including changes to the old headless shell, so do not assume a flag or workaround from an older setup remains applicable.

Does headless Chrome disable JavaScript?
No. Modern Chrome headless shares Chrome’s browser code. A missing result is not, on its own, evidence that JavaScript is disabled.
Should I always use `–no-sandbox` in a container?
No. It is a discouraged, unsupported workaround. Prefer a regular user and diagnose startup conditions before considering environment-specific changes.
